Pinnacle Hold might be Searched, but I suspect Vikkel will hide away anyone of the right age. He's lost a few workers this Turn and won’t want to lose any more. Jevikel will come up with an idea closer to the Hatching. It would be lovely for Merida and the girls to be there. Wait and see.
-
Jevikel and Kadin are far more attuned to Weyr customs now. The new candidates still have a month or so to become used to it before the Hatching.
-
There are several showing on the map of Pern, Half Circle being one of them. Like Vikkel, Yanus (Menolly's father) is fairly hidebound and unwilling to give any useful workers to the Weyr. Illithal may change his views in the mean time, but dragons don’t choose their life partners based on tolerance, just how closely the mind matches with what they are looking for.
-
Very likely she would! I imagine that if the riders have Weyrmates or at least regular partners they would offer comfort. Anne always stated alcohol was provided for those who preferred to get drunk and a number of the support staff might take it as an opportunity to get to know the losing riders better.
-
Funny you mentioned that. There's some washing and oiling in the next chapter!
-
That's a good point. They have a good understanding of the ways of the Weyr and have become much more confident as a result. The new candidates will take a while not to be overawed by the place and the different customs.
-
D'gar certainly isn't sparing them the reality of life as a dragonrider, which is just as well. With so many Holdbred candidates, they are bound to be looking at life in the Weyr through rose tinted glasses, not considering all the hard work. Part of this is probably from the Holders view that dragonriders lounge about all the time when they aren't fighting Thread.

Ramoth laid a grand total of thirty-one eggs over two days. No golden egg, though, which caused some disappointment among many of the Benden folk. ‘Most queens only produce three or four golden eggs during their laying lifespan,’ D’gar told them. ‘Don’t worry about it. It’s perfectly normal.’ He was holding classes and fitness training four mornings a week now that the official Wingleader had returned from Fort. Just in time, really. As well as teaching them - although his lessons ofte

Another wonderful foray to Ravello. @James Carnarvon writes so descriptively you can easily imagine yourself in all the locations. But it's not all lush hillsides, lemons and cicadas; these stories are character driven. In this case, Reza a disaffected teen, is 'dragged' to Ravello by his parents expecting to hate every moment of what he assumes will be a boring holiday. It turns out to be anything but!
-
That explains why you write about Ravello with such familiarity. I'm sure you have walked down many of the paths you describe, taken the bus to Amalfi etc. I really looked forward to each chapter of this story. Breakfast time will be dull now!
-
I really enjoyed your writing style; poetic in its descriptions, particularly of London. Looking forward to the next chapter, even though an underlying sadness is obviously going to pervade, given that we know Todd's eventual end.
-
Father Stefano always gives good advice. Having that chat with him made Reza realise his situation wasn’t as black and white as he had thought. The walk with Gianni and Angelo gave him more time to think about things. Then the date with Otto, interspersed with those delightful and flirty double entendres… By the time they got back to the hotel I got the feeling that if Reza had gone back to his room alone he would have been left wondering what would have happened if he had for a very long time. Now we just have to wait and see how he feels about it afterwards.

You're right. F'lar brings Lessa back to the Weyr where she has just enough time to bathe and eat before the Hatching begins. Some injuries at a Hatching are to be expected, but the one in which Lessa Impressed seemed more chaotic than most. This might be due to the former queen dragon being already dead and no Weyrwoman to act as a steadying influence.
-
The new candidates are going to be just as awed by the Weyr and confused about some of its customs as Jevikel and Kadin were when they arrived.
-
However, we also don't know how long that had been the custom at Benden Weyr. It may have been down to R'gul's general mismanagement. Without any other Weyrs for comparison, people might have just accepted 'it's always been this way'.
-
Kadin was taught by a Harper in Bitra Hold and most probably in classes. I expect he noticed how young children learn more quickly than someone older trying a new skill for the first time. Given his musical skill, the Harper may even have asked him to go through the simple Teaching Ballads with the very young.
-
Both Jevikel and Kadin are gaining confidence. There will be some hidebound folk at the Weyr who will scoff at D'gar's untraditional training methods, but they can’t go against Lessa. In an interval, the most dangerous thing a weyrling learns is how to fly between. In a Pass, they need practical experience as well as all the theory.
-
She was his sister! Mind you, would that really bother him. I always thought he might have his eyes on some of the younger girls. They'd be good to breed a second family now Jevikel and Kemi have both gone.
-
I’m sure D’gar mentioned it for that very reason. Especially with young dragons and riders, complacency kills. It probably wouldn’t have occurred to Jevikel anyone might feel homesick if Kemi hadn’t mentioned it.

The next few weeks are going to bring all sorts of tension.
-
Germessont clutched the stylus so hard his knuckles were white as he concentrated on copying the letters Kadin had written, while speaking their sounds at the same time. Jevikel sat to one side, sipping klah and musing over the latest news. Prideth had just finished laying her eggs in the south. Twenty-nine of them, with no gold egg. Everyone at Benden seemed to be hoping Ramoth would produce more, as if it was some kind of competition. It was clear Kylara wasn’t greatly liked, partly through he

The description of Positano is exactly why I never go on holiday in peak season. Far better to go in spring or autumn, when there are far less people around and sightseeing becomes a pleasure. Dying to find out what happens on the 'date'. Whatever does, Reza is going to go back home a changed person.

Reza doesn't seem particularly restricted by his religion, except for abstinence from alcohol and some dietary restrictions. His father prays occasionally, but is obviously not devout, so I don't think it's religion that is making him hesitate to get involved with Otto. After all, as Otto said, when the holiday is over neither of them will have to see each other again. What's bothering Reza is having the certainties in his mind challenged, the fear of what might happen to him if he oversteps the boundaries he has set for himself.

Must have missed it. I was writing earlier, but just having a laptop on my knee was far too hot, so I thought I’d catch up on some reading.

There was a line I heard in a movie once,” she said. “I thought it was pretty cool. It came down to something like this… that sometimes you have to go away before you can come back and find your people.” A line from one of my favourite films - Cinema Paradiso. I’ve noticed a few other connections too in the names of a few of the characters, like Alfredo the dog, Ennio the cat, Toto and Salvatore.
