But even pussycats can be strong sometimes.” I did not think it possible Gianni could be any more adorable, but it appears he is. Gianni’s gifts for Angelo were a mixture of amusing and wonderful. Introspective by the Pet Shop Boys because Gianni’s father liked them (it makes me feel old as I bought it when it was released), the amusing socks and the beautiful commissioned ceramic bowl hand-made by Elena; the latter a priceless gift. And Sami’s gift, a delight. "Confronted with Sami’s smiling face, he glanced away for a moment, before managing to look at the little boy again with an embarrassed laugh. It could have been a trick of the morning sunlight, but his dark eyes definitely looked a little brighter than usual. Gianni stared at him in amazement. Is he getting… emotional?Gianni had always doubted Angelo’s investment in their little family, but… maybe he had been wrong.” Angelo’s reserved nature on display again, with just a little crack appearing in his calm demeanour, making him even more attractive than ever too. Sami’s relationship with the older teens is reminiscent of Daniele’s friendship with Toto, Michele and Claudia when he first moved from Milan to Ravello. It is pleasing he is likely to form a connection with Luca due to their shared adoption, but I hope he does not forget about Dani and more particularly Marco. Marco is already starting to feel left out as if Sami is going to desert him. His self-esteem which appeared to be on the improve for a while, appears to be spiralling downward again. I guess this is hardly surprising given his home life. “How are things at home?” Giacomo asked the other boy quietly. Despite his best efforts to look away, Gianni sensed their eyes on him once again. He glanced back at them just in time to see Marco shrug slightly. “It’s okay,” Marco replied. “Gianni knows.” Giacomo nodded in relief. “So…” “They’re mostly ignoring me,” Marco mumbled. “But… what else is new?” If Marco is being truthful, then his mother is just as negligent as his father. She may not be bullying him like his father, but negligence takes on many forms. I don’t understand why humans have children only to then ignore them. Many will try and assuage their guilt by giving the children material things to compensate, but in Marco’s case even this is not happening because of his parents’ low paying jobs. “The vegetable garden was dormant in its bare winter clothes, with just a few withered tomato plants awaiting their spring renewal. A few long, dried-out cucuzza squashes hung from faded vines draped over a chestnut pergola that spanned the concrete staircase leading down through the terraces. All the same, under the pale starlight, the view was beautiful.” How do you do it @James Carnarvon? How do you turn something so plain and bare into a picture of beauty. @drsawzall said it best, a masterclass in wordsmithing.

@gdaniel now I understand your liberal and dare I say sane religious beliefs. The church that gave the world John Shelby Spong. I listened to him once give a talk at a gay bookshop in the centre of the gayborhood in Sydney in the mid-1980s during the height of AIDS "hysteria". He left a lasting impression on me, particularly as those present included the Sydney Anglican chapter of the Sisters Of Perpetual Indulgence, with whom he was joking and speaking freely. I had never in my life been exposed to a Christian who spoke positively about the GLBT community.

Doreen and ‘Muscles’ get along so well. ‘Muscles’ is so mature for his age. I am glad he is going to disclose his relationship with Zhiv to Pete as I have a feeling Zhiv is going to need some adults genuinely “in his corner” and I feel Doreen and Pete will if needed be there for him and David. Neither the Sheriff nor Pete seem keen to “recapture” Sol to return him to “civilised" society. I think once David discloses more information to Pete about Zhiv he will be even less enthused about recapturing him. I am ambivalent regarding Celia Duffy. I don’t want to assume she is a bad person because she wants Sol recaptured, but I have to wonder what her primary motivation for desiring this is. Is it because she believes it is for the good of Sol or is she driven by ego? She has previously mentioned Sol was her one failure in her career to date. I believe her motivation is likely a combination of both. I don’t think she is a bad person; however, I doubt she could ever truly appreciate the torture it would be for Zhiv to live in a “civilised” society again when said society has little regard for animals and the environment. I am glad David is aware he and Zhiv are somewhat “out of their league”. "He felt he and Zhiv were playing in a game far out of their league. They knew what the animals felt and thought, but they had little idea of who their opponents were or what they wanted. They knew there were forces resisting change, but those forces were faceless. He and Zhiv needed help to understand what was likely to happen as a result of the mara's decision. They had thousands of animal friends, but they needed some human allies." Those forces may be faceless and resisting change, but they are very powerful, wealthy and have politicians peddling their lies. A beautiful chapter @Biff Spork concluded with one of the most joyous events to date in this story, a declaration of love by each of the boys for the other; and the funniest line to date in this story. “How do you feel about that?” persisted David, as he handed Zhiv a fresh bag of corn chips. Zhiv tore the bag open. “They’re great chips, but I wish they were in a compostable package.” I was in stitches reading this. Zhiv is so unaffected by social norms, it was not necessary in his mind to declare his love for David in words. He had, as far as he was concerned, made such a declaration on many prior occasions with actions and meeting of their minds in the mara. 🥰🥰🥰

“I stood in the doorway for a long time, marveling at how beautiful two boys that age can be in the position they were in. I also marveled at how much I had changed over the past few years. Five years before, I would have reacted so much differently. As I looked at my son, well, almost my son... sort of... kind of... and his boyfriend, I realized I liked the new me.” And well you should like the new me Dan. Your sons’ are fortunate to have you as their father, even if the familial tie is not biological. I can only imagine the misery Mitchell's and Jason's lives would have been if their sperm donor had remained alive to tyrannically rule over their formative teenage years, filling their heads with even more of his bigoted views. Every chapter reveals more to astonish and dislike about Tom. Dan’s comment to Jason about him was priceless, “We all have our faults, and being homophobic was one of your dad's. Just try to remember the good parts and leave the trash behind” must be amongst the very best shade ever thrown; it is even more powerful because I am sure it was not Dan’s intention to diss Tom in any way. I hope Tom's piety extended to him not eating pork or shellfish and ensuring his SWAT uniform was not made of mixed fabrics. Given his fervent opposition to “faggots, queers, gays” I am prepared to stick my neck out and say the only passage in Leviticus he was concerned with, in fact obsessed with, was the one he cited to condemn the aforementioned. So often people of his ilk “cherry pick” biblical dogma to support their nonsensical beliefs. I also have to wonder if Tom may have been a little concerned about his own sexuality. This could explain his extreme vitriol. For his own sake, as well as the sake of both his sons and Alex, Tom is fortunate to have perished prematurely. Had he lived and behaved in accordance with his beliefs I think there may have been a queue to kick his arse, headed by Dan, followed perhaps by Alex’s father and likely the pastor of the church. I wonder if his wife, Nancy, shared his views. Had she not she well may have kicked him to the kerb too (if she had any sense). What troubles me most is this psychopathic cretin was also a member of a SWAT team. Presumably he was licenced to carry a gun and use it. He would have fit perfectly into Team Marjorie, Team Lauren or Team Ron. Another lively and splendidly written chapter @gdaniel Tom’s beliefs and those of many like him, reinforce my own dislike and distrust of most organised religion. If you want "fake news" just listen to the excrement which spews from the mouths of such people.

@gdaniel @drsawzall raised a good point regarding Dan's tardiness in contacting Alex; he, Dan, would not have been in a fit state to talk to Alex had he contacted him any earlier than he did. Following on from this, had Dan contacted Alex he may have not been able to provide the comfort Alex needed and perhaps may have made things worse. You may be right about Tom's homophobia having been "learned" from his father or perhaps @Mancunianmay be right in that Tom may have "learned" it in the workplace.

"Zhiv shook his head. “They’re gonna be after me for sure, now.” Zhiv is acutely aware the trouble his new-found fame may bring and he is rightfully concerned. One tends to forget he is a 13-year-old boy because he has taken such an important responsibility on his shoulders. "The boys hugged. Then David said, “This could be good. I was wondering last night how we were ever gonna to talk to people. I mean, how do we tell everyone what's happening? Nobody listens to thirteen-year-old boys. But now, you’re famous. Look, the view meter just turned to seventeen million, and it’s still climbing. We need to find a way to let you speak to all those people without anybody finding out where you are. Then we can tell them how the animals are feeling, and what they want. People will start to understand what’s going on.” I wish I shared David’s faith in his fellow humans, but alas I do not. I think his limited life experience, coupled with his loving, happy and safe home life has not prepared him for what potentially lay ahead for him, but more particularly for Zhiv. He has experienced bullying at the hands of Jude and River, but having bacon shoved down your throat and being manhandled by them, will pale into insignificance compared to the tactics employed by those industry groups with a vested interest in the continuation of the slaughter and torture of non-human persons for the "benefit" of human persons. One only has to look at the negative reactions to Zhiv’s rescue of the pigs, the incessant whining of Mrs Wilkins regarding her “ownership” of the horses (if only her chickens had silenced her permanently before they left), the threats made by the odious Art Jamieson and the flak from the agriculture lobby and Pork Producers Association. Politicians worldwide kowtow to the likes of the latter, powerful lobbyists who pump money into the election campaigns of those who support their practices. They generally don't give a flying fuck about the rights of animals, not when there is money to be made. Pete will not rest until Jude and River admit what they did to his beloved David. I doubt his persistence will pay off with Jude, he is a liar, and seemingly lies without compunction. River though is a completely different boy. His treatment of David is already causing him great distress, it will take minimal pressing on Pete’s part to obtain a confession from him. I believe Pete will honour David’s request though and not attempt to arrest either boy. A prophetic chapter I fear @Biff Spork. I fear for Zhiv’s safety more and more with the passing of each chapter. He now poses a potential threat to those with much to lose financially. He does not at this point in time have an advocate for his protection either, although if asked and able, I believe Pete and Doreen would welcome him into their lives. He will not however, survive in a society with such scorn for non-human persons. And finally @Biff Spork, mankind. If it were a portmanteau of man and kind it would be the greatest misnomer of all time.

I must say @gdanielI am a little surprised and disappointed it took Pop (Dan) four hours to call Alex to let him know Jason was safe and resting comfortably for now with Mitchell. The only reasonable explanation I can think of for this oversight is that he, Dan, was also so devastated with the events which took place, both during Mitchell's assault on Jason and thereafter. Dan may also not realise how traumatised Alex was likely to have been by the whole episode. I was pleasantly surprised to learn Alex's parents do not have an issue with he and Jason forming a relationship. I cannot remember for sure, but I seem to recall they attend the same church Dan and the boys attend, the same one which Tom and Nancy also attended. I would like to be able to hold the church accountable for Tom's rabid anti-gay beliefs, but seemingly his dogmatic rhetoric was not absorbed whilst in attendance at this particular church. Another well written and believable chapter @gdaniel. It would appear Alex and Jason are both very sensitive and tender-hearted, in fact, Alex may be even more so. His extreme physical response (and this is not a criticism of him) is of concern. It may be solely attributable to the violence of Mitchell's reaction, but I think not.

You will not be sorry @James Baxter; @raven1 's recommendation was sage indeed. I recommend you read the stories in order of their publication to derive the most pleasure from them. They are essentially chronological, the one exception being La Bella Vacanza. Your comments above indicate you are well on the way to being a convert, a Carnarvonite if you will. @James Carnarvon is a most gracious author too, as you will soon discover. He takes the time to acknowledge those of us who appreciate his work, something which I value greatly.

“Personally,” said the sheriff as he leaned forward over his desk, “I’d be proud to meet him. It would be an honor to shake his hand. I definitely don’t want to catch him for Social Services or arrest him as if he’s some kind of criminal. I don’t know what he’s been doing for the last year, but whatever it is, it’s turned him into the kind of person I wish I was.” I believe the Sheriff’s sentiments echo those of Pete yet unspoken. I got the distinct impression when Celia rang asking if Zhiv (Sol) could be caught to be returned to another foster home Pete was less than enamoured with the idea. “River closed his eyes and said, “Yeah.” He didn’t want to talk about what had forced those tears out. It wasn’t the pain from the rattlesnake bites. It was much worse than that, and he knew it wasn’t going to go away in a few days.” River’s redemption appears to be well on the road to completion. He faces insurmountable odds, the likes of his father, Art, in particular. I cannot express my true opinion of Art, there are not enough expletives to adequately describe this odious man. The only expletive with any shock value left is one which cannot be used without censure when commenting on GA. Suffice to say I wish him harm or better still death at the hands of the non-human persons he continues to torture, maim and kill. Melissa’s video has started a movement, a feel-good movement embracing animal rights. The question I have is will it last, or have many people “jumped on the bandwagon” because it is the latest “thing”. Outstanding chapter @Biff Spork. The animals have received some “good press” thanks to the pig rescue undertaken by Zhiv, but I fear it won’t last. There is much money to be made in the murder of non-human persons, and not just for eating them. Those with a vested interest will not lay down quietly, they will fight with the ferocity their power and wealth have entitled them.

The revelation Marco’s father Lorenzo is an oafish brute came as no surprise to me. I, like Gianni, was disappointed in Marco’s mother Gemma; she did naught to stop Lorenzo's homophobic rantings, although it would not surprise if she too has been a victim of the brute. “Lorenzo…” Gemma ventured timidly from the corner of the alleyway, but Lorenzo flicked a hand at her, silencing her with an impatient noise” indicates she is at least in fear of her husband. Has she been a victim of physical abuse from him or has it been restricted to verbal abuse, him bullying and belittling her. I was pleasantly surprised Marco stood up to his father; he did not cower, although he may have been emboldened by the presence of Gianni and Elena. Is it any wonder he was so distraught when Giacomo and Emilia appeared to have dropped him from their friendship group in favour of Daniele. Giacomo and Emilia were his only outlet for happiness it would appear; he sought solace in their company because his home life was shit. Elena was a most pleasant surprise; she took Lorenzo to task over his brutish behaviour. She is far more formidable than I have given her credit. Lorenzo’s accusation against Gianni particularly rankled. I was waiting for the accusation to be made from the moment Marco sought refuge, albeit by accident, in the arms of Gianni and Elena. He, Lorenzo, is so predictable. As the drama unfolded and Marco headed off to school I pondered if intervention from Salvatore may be of use and lo and behold Gianni crosses his path. If I recall correctly Salvatore did not abuse Toto either physically or emotionally when Toto revealed his attraction to Michele, he merely expressed his confusion. He made the effort to understand his son whom he dearly loved. It appears Lorenzo has a more distant relationship with Marco than Salvatore does with Toto; it will not surprise me if Lorenzo lacks the desire to understand Marco, and if this be the case, Marco is better off without him. I would usually never recommend someone seek guidance from a priest or the like, but if Lorenzo has any desire to understand Marco, it may be useful to speak to the priest at the local church (I cannot recall his name). If I remember correctly, he offered wise counsel to both Gianni and Toto when they were struggling with their sexuality. Sami’s first day at school was not a success; unsurprisingly some of the children present were not welcoming. Gianni’s attempt to counteract Sami’s unhappiness and despair and the responses he gave to Sami’s questions were, to my inexperienced mind, spot on. His panic attack which followed was likely cathartic as suggested by my fellow reader @drsawzall. A profoundly moving chapter @James Carnarvon, very impressively written with just the right amount of emotion and high drama. In addition to your beautifully written descriptive language for all things natural and man-made, you have a real talent for the emotional. It is my observation you belong to the school of ‘less is more’, an approach I find so much more effective as you don’t fall into the trap of diminishing the impetus and impact of an emotional scene by the use of excessive melodrama. The scene dominated by Marco and his father's fight rang true because of this skill you possess. Angelo may say “That’s so British” as he did in chapter 3. I forgot to mention this in my comments on that chapter; I found it very amusing, particularly when I “heard” Gianni’s response to Angelo, “bloody Italians”.

I have always assumed, rightly or wrongly, Angelo is one of those rare and very admirable people, who do not need to hear the sound of their own voice, particularly in larger, group settings, to validate themselves. This was never so evident as when he chose not to "bite" when Monica (whom I incorrectly referred to as Monica’s mother rather than Emilia’s mother in comments on chapter 2) made her tactless comments about Da Rossi, the restaurant owned by Pietro and Anna. I think you write him exceedingly well @James Carnarvon. I find him intriguing, a person I have enjoyed getting to know more about. The “air of mystery” which stills surrounds him only increases his appeal. For me at least, he has been and continues to be, so much more than what I initially thought. I can vaguely recall when making comments on a prior book in the Ravello series, making similar remarks after initially dismissing him. He has been a revelation like no other character in your repertoire. He may be difficult for you to write, but his appeal continues to strengthen, for me at least.

On the contrary @James Carnarvon, I think the story is a good fit for me. I was perhaps too narrow in the focus of my prior comments. I have read many stories about gay couples fostering and/or adopting children and have invariably found them interesting and moving, even though the urge to parenthood (at least of human children) has never struck me. As this story continues I will not be at all surprised if my investment in the Gianni/Angelo and Sami relationship increases, particularly if Marco forges a strong relationship with Gianni and Marco, which he, Marco, seems desirous of. If this occurs, I think it quite possible Sami's relationship with his fathers, particularly with Gianni, will blossom. I would not be a good parent to human children as I don't have the patience required and would find it very difficult to have fair expectations of them (I am like this with myself, I am my own harshest critic). At my age (59) this is not likely to change. I am very fond of Marco (the prickly one 🤣) and look forward to the development of his storyline, particularly if Daniele (whom I adore, and not just for his penchant for tie dyed clothing) is central to the plot. I also look forward to more from Gianni, who I have always liked, and Angelo, who has grown on me significantly since his first appearance. This story, more than any of its predecessors, has made me realise Angelo is the ideal partner for Gianni; his outgoing personality, laissez-faire attitude to life and great sense of humour the perfect antidote for Gianni's melancholy and angst. He is I believe fiercely protective of Gianni and appears always mindful of his propensity to melancholy, offering him comfort and space when needed. The strengthening of their bond and its lasting appeal I have mostly attributed to Gianni to date. I now believe I have been completely wrong in my thinking, if anything, Angelo may have been even more instrumental in the endurance of their union. He is deserving of the award for being the "star in my eye" for Gianni.

I don’t think the conclusion of the chapter was unrealistic @gdaniel, although the desired outcome may have taken a little longer to achieve than the relatively short time it apparently took. I was surprised the homophobic poison had been planted in Mitchell’s mind by his late biological father, Tom. In hindsight it makes perfect sense that such bullshit had been festering in Mitchell’s mind for a long time, that it had been planted there by someone whom he greatly admired and was keen to impress. What a toxic jackass Tom must have at least partially been. In retrospect it was as well he died early in Mitchell and Jason’s lives, otherwise he may have been the one beating Jason. Given his profession, he would likely have possessed guns which he could have used to murder his “fucking faggot son”. Although I understand the motivation, Pop (Dan’s) verbal assault on Mitchell troubled me greatly, particularly the insults he delivered regarding Mitchell’s vegetarian diet and refusal to kill animals. What troubled me the most about these comments, which I accept were said by Dan in jest, is that I have no doubt there are those who would think like this, the type of moronic human who will often link homosexuality to bestiality/paedophilia to veganism to socialism/communism to the breakdown of society (and some of them may not even be Republicans). I must say @gdaniel I found this chapter very authentic; it is set in Texas after all. Lettuce licker though. It almost sounds like an exotic sexual practice, perhaps something akin to salad tossing.

@James Carnarvon my fellow readers have made some interesting and astute observations regarding the relationship between Gianni and Sami. I have had very little experience (read none) in relating to children as an adult as none of my friends have had children by choice. I have never had any desire to father children myself, but have enjoyed fostering numerous cats and kittens in the past 15 years, all of which with one exception were to varying degrees a joy to foster. Human children hold no appeal for me so Gianni’s frustration and feelings of failure and rejection I can only partially identify with. @dutch woman's comments appear very astute “… but in many fostering cases it does not click between child and adult, little to do about it. Gianni shouldn't put his hopes too high……Friendship with other children is easier. And the fact that Sami protected his drawing of his parents so much shows that he can't let go of his parents yet.” It may transpire Gianni and Angelo are not the “right fit” for Sami, but Gianni should not see this as a reflection of himself (easy for me to say, much harder for him to accept). @drsawzall's comment “I find it interesting that Marco is finding some semblance of comfort/security with Gianni and Angelo...Could Marco hold the key or be the link that brings Sami closer to Gianni and Angelo???” reflected thoughts I had myself whilst reading this chapter. It appears Marco has been and continues to be neglected somewhat by his parents, even if that neglect is only not caring enough to spend time with him and enquire about his life. This may give him “an edge” over the others in Sami’s life in understanding Sami. With or without the aid of Daniele and/or Giacomo, I believe Marco very well may hold the key for Gianni and Angelo to become closer to Sami. If Sami observes a burgeoning friendship between Gianni and Marco, it may encourage him to reach out to Gianni too. Another well written chapter @James Carnarvon, but one has come to expect nothing less than this from you. You held my attention and captivated me with your writing, even though I am not as invested in the Gianni/Angelo and Sami relationship as many of my fellow readers. I have to say I enjoyed the mere mention of my beloved scraping cicadas (which have been out full force in Sydney, Australia of late) and was charmed once again with the description of the avenue of oleanders. You have mentioned them in passing before, but for some reason I was particularly struck with them in this chapter.

Pleasant surprises are most welcome @gdaniel. I am by nature more a pessimist than an optimist, thus a pleasant outcome is doubly felt.

Never has Zhiv’s special connection with pigs been more important to both he and pigs than in this chapter. Although he does not state it, I am certain Zhiv must have heard the screaming of the pigs trapped in the truck or saw the event in his mind, leading to his rescue of them. “A cheer swelled from the animal rights activists, and the sheriff and his deputies couldn’t help but join in. They all were filled with an emotion they couldn’t suppress, and more than a few tears were shed. When the boy was no longer visible, each of those watching felt a sense of loss. It was as if for a moment, they had glimpsed a better, brighter world, and then it was gone.” The latter sentence was one of the saddest, if not the saddest, to date in this wonderful story @Biff Spork. I found myself sobbing, the enormity of the cruel barbaric treatment of animals by humans never so potently expressed with a few simple words. “Oh, yeah, but it doesn’t bother me that they saw me naked. What worries me is that they saw me. Even if they don’t try to hunt the pigs down, there’ll be some who’ll want to hunt me, to catch me so they can make me live like them.” Zhiv was visibly distressed.” Zhiv is acutely aware of the danger he faces from those of his own species who will feel threatened (especially financially) by his allegiance to the animals. Given the synopsis of the story, I feel it will almost certainly end in tragedy, with Zhiv, our beautiful unselfish pig-boy, its likely victim. Profoundly moving @Biff Spork. ‘Love’ and ‘anger’ are so often bedfellows, and for me I felt them in almost equal measure when reading this masterfully written chapter. I could have chosen either as the emoticon to describe the chapter, but love ultimately won because of the pig rescue.

@gdaniel I fear the poison may have been injected by Tammy and the most upsetting scenario I have envisaged as a result of this is the ruination or near ruination of Mitchell's relationship with not only Jason (and by default Alex), but with Pop too. If this be the case, I have also envisaged his relationship with Tammy will eventually sour (no great loss if she injected the poison) and his relationships with Jason and Pop may be too damaged to be salvageable.

I chose the sad emoticon for this chapter @Biff Spork because for me it was the dominant emotion of the chapter. Melissa, although pleased to have rescued her namesake, understandably felt great sadness she had left thousands of others behind to suffer extreme cruelty and torture at the hand of humans. Doreen felt some sadness that David’s childhood is slipping away with the onset of puberty. Her joy at raising him is tempered somewhat by the pace at which he is becoming his own person. I had to laugh when Pete assumed David had been eating cherries in bed which caused the stain on his sheets. The animals present in the mara have decided to join forces and declare war on humans. This in of itself did not fill me with sadness as their declaration is wholly justified, what filled me with sadness was the animals resignation that many will die defending themselves against humans, but they will persist because humans are murdering them anyway. The animals desperation to live in peace is evident to any human who is prepared to observe and listen, but too few are. David’s inside name (I almost had it right @Biff Spork when I referred to it as his inner name) has been revealed, and it is Vizh. Although he appears to have a special connection with the trout, I wonder if the swarming of the honeybees indicates the transition Vizh will make to become the “insectorator”. River’s redemption appears to have begun. It was interesting to observe the animals have accepted Vizh (David) as one of them just as Zhiv stated. The starlings, wasps and rattlesnakes raced to Vizh's rescue to protect him from the unwanted advances of Jude and River. It is unfortunate the lesser evil of the two was the only one seriously on the end of the animals attack to protect Vizh. Perhaps this may have a bigger impact upon River though than just the physical pain he is experiencing. @Biff Spork the celebration of Zhiv and now Vizh in the mara was beautiful and heart-warming. I am trepidatious though about the animals declaring war on humans. Historical and current human behaviour demonstrates this will inflame human hatred even more as humanity as a whole thinks itself superior to all other species and is tyrannical in its quest to prove so.

Not for this reader @James Carnarvon. There is something about the ambience of Ravello you create which invariably washes away negativity in its various forms, from sadness to feeling unwell, from disappointment to anger to rage. A Day Trip To Ravello (with a nod to Fiddler's Dram) is like a sun shower or an enjoyable meal (Italian of course and accompanied by wine) or the purring of a beloved feline in one's ear.

"YOU FUCKING QUEERS! GET THE HELL OUTTA HERE ALEX AND DON'T EVER COME BACK. JASON YOU LITTLE COCKSUCKER YOU FUCKING FAGGOT. WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING? WHAT ARE MY FRIENDS GOING TO SAY? HOW AM I GOING TO FACE THE KIDS AT SCHOOL OR AT CHURCH? YOU LITTLE WORTHLESS PIECE OF SHIT! YOU SONOFABITCH! YOU FUCKING FREAK!" Mitchell is clearly NOT the boy/man he has portrayed himself as or has his mind perhaps been poisoned by the words of another or others. And to make it all about himself really pissed me off; how is he going to face his friends at school or at church. Well, firstly Mitchell, it is none of their fucking business, so unless you tell them you arrogant little prick, they will be none the wiser. Has he forgotten his statement to Pop (Dan) that he loved his brother and always wanted to protect him. Pop (Dan's) comment about Tammy "There were several occasions where I saw a look pass across Tammy's face as she watched Alex and Jason interact that gave me cause to pause" has me wondering if she might be homophobic or may have already made unfavourable comments to Mitchell to turn him against his brother. I have to wonder about the "teachings" of the church they attend to, although if it is conservative it does not seem to have poisoned Dan's mind. A truly shocking chapter @gdaniel, even more so because Mitchell appears to have acted so uncharacteristically, but perhaps he has not given Jason's reluctance to share with him the likelihood he is gay. The final sentence appears ominous, I can only but speculate what it may mean. Of all the scenarios I have imagined, none of them are pretty.

As a long-time vegetarian there are only two vegetables I refuse to eat, Brussels sprouts and peas. Both are truly repulsive, just the thought of eating either makes me feel physically ill. Oddly enough though, some of the plant-based chicken I buy and thoroughly enjoy is made from pea protein. I must agree with @drsawzallin his assessment of Monica's mother based on the tactless comment she made about the hotel owned by Angelo's brother and sister-in-law. Mrs Deakes provided Gianni with some very sound advice based on her wealth of experience. A delightfully restful and soothing chapter for the most part @James Carnarvon; just what I needed after a long day working in a brand new office with hot-desking in place, only a little further from home, but with double the travel time. Suffice to say, if I was in a comfortable financial position, today well may have been my last day. To read of Ravello and its charms brought some respite to a rather ordinary day. And, I loved the placement of the chapter title.

This thought has crossed my mind too @Jjeffalch, but Pete may surprise. His sympathy for the plight of non-human persons seems to be growing exponentially, so I think he would at least listen to any argument David may have for not disclosing Zhiv's whereabouts, unless he thought Zhiv and/or David in imminent danger by not doing so. The ugliness of so many of the human persons in this story is causing my already “questionable” sense of humour to become even moreso @Biff Spork. Deputy McAdam’s observation that “His condition had not improved overnight. The crows had removed his eyes, but they had lacked surgical precision” almost had me in stitches, chuckling loudly and not feeling guilty for doing so. Furthermore, “There were dark splotches of blood on the chair and the lawn, but no eyes. Pete imagined the medics had picked them up in case it was possible to re-attach them” had me pondering if the surviving crows sat around cawing to each other on how tasty human eyes are, just like River’s father espousing how tasty piglets’ balls are. Zhiv’s desperate plea to see David again was so heartfelt it brought tears to my eyes. This was alleviated somewhat by David’s humorous response, especially his statement that “My avocado sandwich misses you”. Doreen’s observation of Lilili and Kek in such proximity to David understandably startled her. To her credit, she retreated from her vantage point, assured David is not hallucinating. Once again Jude is sucking cock and this time kissing too. For a boy obsessed with the immorality of queers, he certainly seems to like to indulge in behaviour most often attributed to them. "Zhiv, oh Zhiv. Vizh, oh Vizh". Perhaps it may be that Vizh is to be David’s “inner name” (my apologies @Biff Spork, I don’t think Zhiv referred to this other name for the yet unnamed David as his inner name, but I cannot remember the reference he used and am too tired tonight to investigate this). Melissa’s witness of the appalling “living” conditions of the factory farm chickens was grotesque. To quote Isaac Singer, the author of Yentl “In relation to them, all people are Nazis; for the animals it is an eternal Treblinka”. Very apt for such death camps that exist in factory farming. Outstanding chapter @Biff Spork. All humanity should be exposed to Melissa's observations, although I think many human person's would not be appalled, dismissing them as "only animals".

Danny and Sam (I love how Danny calls him by his full name Samuel) are beginning to realise their friendship may be a little deeper than previously thought. What a sad indictment on many of our species then, and in many even now, that the boys feel this is something to fear and be ashamed of. Human brains poisoned by religious and societal bullshit; non-human animals don't suffer any of this nonsense. And yet, we still think we are the clever species. In so many ways we are, but in so many meaningful ways we are not. Enough of my proselytising. Beauty in simplicity. Precious it is when displayed so eloquently as in this delightful chapter @gdaniel. I am interested to see in what direction this story will go, noting it is set in the 1950's (which when compared to many parts of the world is still far more progressive than what they are now).
