"Merrickville, where crime never slept" is probably a business opportunity for the kids. They could open a cozy little B&B where crime can freshen up before it heads back over to Manotick, where the noir really start to cook.

"Wolochowski knew that things were never easy, not on the mean streets of Merrickville, where crime never slept, and danger lurked behind cheerily painted western style flapping doors. " Crime in Merrickville is just a day job, it commutes in on the 8:15 from Smiths Falls.

This, and their date is known and Jack was at his parents home in that time frame, so at a very bleak minimum, they'd constitute evidence of neglect; if some hypothetical villain gave Jack that beating and the parents didn't act to get him care or even know about it. Generally courts will take "they did it" testimony from victims; they were there, after all.

re: sad emoji @Krista ; your characters don't have to live like this, you know. In a @Lee Wilson story Lisa Benton would have faced serious narrative consequences by now. If not murder, at least struck by lightning or something.

Lisa may be an empty-nester very soon. This would be very good for Cody, because he'd get Joel and nice at the Connley's is lot better than toxic at the Benton house. Also Cody keeps running off into some fields, he might really enjoy the farm and riding horses around. Lacey is a bit older than Cody?
