    Chapter 29

Ok, at this time I'll take it all back about Joel maybe being ace. It took us a long time to get here, but feels like a triumph.

    Chapter 28

Yay for Joel finally settling into the (actually quite good) situation he's found himself in. And hehe, for all that the Kepler parents are neglectful, there are a few things that it's convenient they're never home for. (Although- surprise! - that could lead to some hilarity as well).

    Chapter 23

Still, I think Joel could have answered Celia "It's the first time I'll have with Cody since all this and I don't want to invite people I don't know well to that" But that would require him knowing his own emotions and thoughts and being able to utter sentences about them, and he isn't that guy.

    Chapter 23

Yes, indeed, it might should have done.

    Chapter 23

Yeah Celia's leaning on Joel on this, but she's out on a limb there. It's help if Joel could better articulate anything to anyone, but he doesn't know people at Fletcher well enough to know if they'd be nice to Cody (and Lacey) at a kids birthday party, and Joel -quite properly- has a lot invested emotionally in having a good time with Cody and Cody having a good time. I like Rissa, she's a great and fun character, but don't think she's getting a lot of votes for "most likely to be fun at a kids' birthday party with ponies." Grady Roy we met helping his little sister get shoes or something? Seems to be a maybe but is also an open channel back to Tempton.

    Chapter 69

yeah, the "jump-start" chapters have moved on to "shot out of a cannon" chapters

    Chapter 22

It's fun to see Joel as the paranoid introspective teen that he is, who's constantly paralyzed by worry about what people will think and worrying about their reactions - and he hasn't figured out that he's sitting at the gay kids table for lunch yet. No wonder Jaxton needs to intervene - new jockboy sitting with the queers will definitely get the warhawks crowing.

    Chapter 22

Prickly is an excellent descriptor for Joel. Somehow Krista just decided that we can't have nice things. Yeah Joel played that pretty well and perhaps Rissa and Lance have upgraded him to maybe-ally. Yeah, Mrs Finch seems to know how to read the room. Ag Science seems to be a pretty alright class, actually, and for day two Joel has the basis of a pretty decent and diverse friend group going. Just that always-getting-in-his-own-way to go as the last problem.

    Chapter 42

Tommy working back into the group was excellent. Matching Jonah's energy is some feat, but he did it!

    Chapter 7

Have you considered getting one of those inflatable frog suits? I hear they're fun. The story of Small Fry Speed improved my week quite a bit, as did some other green shoots in the news. Ca va bien y aller.

    Chapter 7

I look forward to the beginning of the further adventures of Small Fry Speed. (also, what's going on from those Samson kids? We haven't heard from them in a while)
  12. Mattyboy

    Chapter 6

This chapter reminds me of "you have to meet people where they are." But also "where the vets are is at the clinic, so you should go there if your dog is injured." I guess it hasn't been very long.

    Chapter 5

It feels like maybe an audio-reader rendered Hosea as José.
  14. Mattyboy

    Chapter 41

Tommy seemed open to the point of curious last time we saw him. Jonah would be an exceptionally safe try-out for Tommy as he's unknown to anyone else in town. Not quite like what Jonah asked for at the pool, but I can see them having a moment.

    Chapter 5

The timestamps really built up the suspense. Powerful. I just picked up on the symbolism of the "supper for ten" already laid out. That wasn't a throwaway line about the caterers, was it?
  16. Mattyboy

    Chapter 4

I feel Small Fry would be an outstanding therapy dog.
  17. Mattyboy

    Chapter 4

That's awful from (presumably) Marcus' parents, but excellent that Joshua and Marcus are at home with dinner for ten on hand and the thought to call Dr Fenton already on their minds. I guess Elisha turned the wrong way when he went to look for Fry, or perhaps it just slipped our careless (or cruel?) author's mind to give us a 4:45 update on two of the main characters.

    Chapter 3

Elisha's speech made me think of "I am human, so nothing human is alien to me." His planned Jesus-speech was predictable and would have fallen flat, but talking about Small Fry made real human connections. I've known that quotation for a long time, and always kinda assumed it was biblical, but I see on looking it up that it's Terence. Hosea wouldn't have much time for Terence, I expect, but his zealotry is quite human. It makes him a very distinct kind of villain from the Jack of Spades, who never thought about making any claim to righteousness.

    Chapter 3

Eli's taken a good step towards humanity there, with his speech. Hosea planning for a nice camping trip was a humanizing nuance for him as well. He's still monstrous, but that adds an interesting plausibility to Hosea's righteousness. It was Marcus that met Small Fry, and Joshua in the BMW, so Joshua is a bit further from knowing enough to act. And uh-oh, Joshua and Marcus are going to be out tonight when Elisha and Fry are going to be facing up to a cold night and a newly padlocked shed.
  20. Mattyboy

    Chapter 2

Marcus considers Joshua to be "filthy rich" with his family money. Whether that's from Grandpa Motts or from John isn't clear, but enough money to pay the bills and have the nice house by the lake is giving Joshua some independence at least. Paying all the bills isn't all John should have done, but it does count as a redeeming feature for me.

    Chapter 2

Nice introductions and hints of how the threads will weave, but plenty of options and suspense to come as well. I'm a bit intrigued that there's no hint here that Joshua or Marcus are thinking much about the Liberty Academy Thanksgiving, and what Liberty potentially offered them and might be able to offer Eli. And interesting but saddening that there seems to have been no changes (maybe just no changes that Joshua knows about) in the John Renkin story arc. Which seems a bit tragic. Earlier in his life John really was trapped with no good options, but that's not the case anymore.
  22. Mattyboy

    Chapter 21

It's an irrational number and it goes on being irrational without any limit. And so is Joel. We've been over this, Krista.
  23. Hehe, the kitchen/food metaphors were excellent and hilarious.
  24. Mattyboy

    Chapter 40

Jonah would have loved the job of getting Jack into the shower. I thought that was coming, but story stayed on the tracks instead. Oh well. And yay for Jonah and Christian.
