  1. California’s biggest cities spread it out through the month of June. But LA and Sacramento held theirs on the same day. Oakland cannot compete with San Francisco or San José, so they have it later in the year so they can shine with a family-friendly event on their own. California Junes are not usually as hot as our Augusts and Septembers since there’s almost always fog along the coast this time of year.

    Mistakes

Okay, Adam says he can cook donuts. Does that mean he can open a box, or does he actually know how to fry the dough? What exactly does he do at the restaurant, amuse customers? ;–)
  3. This is Texas and daddy has money. Hannah probably has a concealed carry permit. And it’s probably her own gun. :–(
  4. I used to know a (Gay) lawyer with kind of a dominant personality. He once mentioned that (he believed that) if a boy invites another boy over for a sleepover, he was asking for sex. The rest of us couldn’t believe what he said! He said that he had lots of sex with his school-aged friends when they invited him over for a sleepover. ;–) You seem to have a personality that just encourages other guys to snuggle and shower with you! It’s a unique talent. Too bad it’s not more widespread…
  5. I’ve started my third annual thoughts about the Programs I see at Frameline. I’ve posted a list of the Premieres and plan to add the list of expected guests soon. There’s no free WiFi in the theater, otherwise I’d update my thoughts between Programs. (I asked Frameline’s Executive Director why Festival Sponsor AT&T doesn’t offer free WiFi and she thought it was a good idea. During the CRT iMac era, they did offer a pavilion with free internet one year.) Note: I don’t call them reviews because they’re usually just a line or two per movie. If you’re interested in more complete reviews, I refer you to my friend’s blog on Film Queen Reviews or on Twitter. I’m surprised he hasn’t reviewed any screener previews yet. But you can see what he said about last year’s movies.
  6. Maybe Jesse has been impotent for a very long time, poor guy… ;–)
  7. Showering together, snuggling under quilts, hugging. What a tease! You probably slept together too, right? (It would be wasteful to wash two sets of sheets.) ;–)
  8. I’d have to say I’m about halfway between Artie and Adam. ;–) I was well trained by my mother to shop for bargains and she taught me how to cook the basics so I’d never starve. I’m also on a limited income and can’t just buy everything I want. I’m not quite as good a bargain shopper as my younger brother – he has a much better memory for prices and is able to shop at multiple stores to get the best deals. ;–) But I do buy lots of ice cream and other unhealthy food. I also buy jarred spaghetti sauce rather than making it from scratch the way my mother did when I was growing up. I also buy frozen macaroni & cheese because I’m lazy (but I refuse to buy the blue box junk with the orange powder). I did stop buying soda all the time and only buy it a couple times a year. ;–) I’m sure my diet is too high in sodium and sugar, but I’m trying to eat more vegetables. It’d be easier if I went grocery shopping more than once a month. But I have a difficult time getting out of the apartment (clinical depression & anxiety). ;–) But in Adam’s defense, he works in a restaurant! He’s around food all day. He probably gets to eat well prepared food at work. But he should make an effort for Artie – even if that means he’s bringing stuff home from work! ;–)

    Chapter 11

As a service to readers frustrated by abrupt endings, here is the deleted paragraph from the end of this chapter: ;–)

If what everyone thinks is true, @Aceinthehole, you’re even more twisted than I ever thought you were! (Twisted is not necessarily a bad thing. You did warn us about unusual customs!) ;–)

Ageist! ;–) I’m sure Fred could teach Jeff lots of new tricks he never learned from women he’d been with in the past! ;–)
  12. Statistically, it’s very unusual for a girl to be a shooter, but it’s not unheard of. Rich, entitled teenagers think they can get away with anything because their parents have always been able to get them out of any trouble in the past, no matter what the consequences, using their wealth and influence to manipulate things in their favor. It’s clear that Frank Webber doesn’t take Hannah’s problems seriously. And Hannah isn’t thinking things through, she doesn’t think ahead – that makes her more dangerous. I think she’s planning to use the gun to threaten Nick. I doubt she has any bullets.

    But you’re both Canadians (like @sandrewn)! ;–)
  15. I think Adam might need to grow up even more than Artie. Artie will be adjusting from the dramatic culture shock he has just endured, coming from a very close-minded small town and entering a city filled with numerous cultures and philosophies interacting in surprising and interesting ways. In some ways, we can already see that Artie acts more mature than Adam. But at least Artie won’t personally have to deal with the devastation gentrification brings to low-income residents and neighborhoods throughout the Bay Area, including SF districts like the Castro, the Mission, Bayview, and the Western Addition.

    The New Kid

Use ‘SF.’ That’s what I do when I know people won’t think I’m referring to Science Fiction or San Fernando. Unless I’m writing to someone who really knows San Francisco, then it’s the City! ;–) I don’t think that anybody in California uses IATA airport codes to refer to the city it serves. LAX, SAN, SJC, SFO, and OAK refer to just the airport, not LA, San Diego, San José/Silicon Valley, SF, or Oakland. People in the other CA are weird! ;–)
  17. I hope someone has a wetsuit for Artie! You just cannot surf in Northern California without one. The water is way too cold. I now think that Adam must have tried hustling when he first got kicked out of the house. What else can a 16-year-old do with no high school diploma? You can try begging on the streets and some people are very successful. But that would be just as much against Adam’s upbringing as selling yourself.

SFO is the airport! And it’s owned by, but not even in the City and County of San Francisco. It’s located in San Mateo County. That’s why it’s a BART ride away, not on Muni. By the way, they’re planning on naming Terminal 1 after Harvey Milk! San Francisco is the only consolidated City/County in California. That means that the entire county of San Francisco is the city of San Francisco – even the Farallon Islands, Alcatraz, Treasure Island & Yerba Buena Island, and Angel Island are all part of the city. San Francisco has a rich history as the backdrop for movies and TV shows. But not all of them were filmed in the City. While the original Tales of the City miniseries (set in San Francisco) was filmed in the US, its sequels were filmed in Canada. Teachers in San Francisco (as well as the whole Bay Area) are underpaid considering the extremely high cost of living here. Teachers really have to want to live here to work here when there are so many other locations that, while paying less, are lower in cost of living and their income would go further. It is something that all the school districts are struggling with and a few are attempting some very innovative ideas to compensate for the high cost of housing.

Was Adam not born male? I’m trying to think of why there’d be such an incredible hostility towards him and this fits! Some would call him an abomination if he were a Transman. That would also explain why he says he’s not Gay. ;–)

    God Forsaken

Artie is escaping a pair of religious fanatics who would never have let him listen to Messiah! ;–) When Uncle Adam was introduced, I knew that he was almost certainly kicked out of the house because he was Gay. The fact that Artie’s mother wouldn’t talk to her brother Adam because of her religious belief seemed to confirm that. Even if Artie turns out not to be a 6 on the Kinsey Scale, he’s going to be in a much better environment! California isn’t perfect, it just seems that way compared to Texas. ;–)

There is a great documentary about Gays and Lesbians who fought in WWII called Coming Out Under Fire (1994). The old Army strategy of pairing up soldiers as buddies meant that many of them discovered more than just a bromance. The war caused many young people to leave rural areas and meet lots of other people they’d never have encountered otherwise. Many realized they could never move back to the small towns that they came from and stayed in the cities they were discharged in: San Francisco and New York. ;–) The origin of the Gay Ghettos were those discharged soldiers who stayed in the big city and never went home. ;–) I saw the documentary when it played, I believe, as the Closing Night Program of NAATA’s San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival in the Castro Theatre. After the movie ended, the director, Arthur Dong was introduced on stage. He mentioned that his mother was in the audience and pointed her out. It was difficult not to see her, she was standing up waving her arms over her head wildly! (My mother would have been incredibly embarrassed and would have been sinking into her seat in an attempt to become invisible!) ;–) National Asian American Telecommunications Association is now CAAM (Center for Asian American Media) and the film festival is now CAAMfest.

Just kidding. ;–) I’m hoping that Todd is worried because David was found and is in the hospital recovering from a heroin overdose in critical condition.
