Wretched, bogus, implausible, horrible, badly written, plastic characters, a circle jerk of chicles, really, really bad science and the worst ending in the history of movies.

Neutrinos that heat up the earths core? The writer should be beaten to death with a physics book.

Fails the science, barely pases for fiction.

Skip it or watch it for computer generated graphics- the best part of the movie.

The CGI is all this crappy, craptacular crapfest has to offer.

Don't be a fool and buy it at retail. Wait till it's on the $5 rack in Walmart before you add this turd to your collection. Better yet, flush it.

I'm tired. Being the local freak-tard is exhausting. I have reached the point to where I despise them as much for their pity and charity as their ignorance and superstition.

Humans really are despicable and disgusting animals.

It is better to be a beast.

Zombieland - is a movie I was all set to hate. A redneck, a geek and two female grifters turn out to be much deeper and more engaging characters than you would think at first glance. It turns out that the very skills that made these characters only marginally functional in ordinary society made them excel at survival after the zombie apocalypse. This ain't Shakespeare but it's good for a few laughs.

Pandorum - Hated it. I'm not sure whether it was the boredom, non-acting or the unintelligible rubbish that rubbed me wrong way. All these factors taken together, I am bitter about the 90 minutes of my consciousness wasted. At my age I keep track. Hard core tin-hat wearing sci-fi junkies might get off on it until something better comes along.

9 is an animated post-apocalyptic tale of animated sock puppets out to save the world from evil machine-brain which had slaughtered humanity in a genocidal war. You have to suspend disbelief considerably to think that nine sock-puppets are going to have any better luck than the whole of humanity.

Somehow the sock-puppets prevail which leaves me thinking that humanity deserved what they got if nine sock puppets can succeed where they failed. I'm not sure what the sock puppets are saving the day for. Humanity is gone and they are only nine sock puppets to start with and less when its over. Maybe you'll enjoy this movie on acid. It did nothing for me clean & sober. It was entirely too animated.

Love it, hate it, don't care: you have to admit that there is a magic to the place that doesn't exist anywhere else.

Four years ago when Katrina destroyed most of the city, we were afraid that the magic was gone.

    Today... the magic is back.

I got a call today. Some idiot on a bulldozer had sliced a fiber cable and they needed somebody who could patch it up fast. The job turned out to be a misery.

It wasn't the cable. It was cut twice leaving a gap of two and a half feet.

It wasn't the number of fiber strands. That could have been a lot worse. It was only 24 pairs.

It wasn't that the hole was muddy and wet. It wasn't. It was frozen.

It was the coldest damn hole I've ever been in.

I got there at 1 this afternoon and go to work. In a job like this, you have to terminate both ends and patch them together and test the cable.

It's very fine work. You need to use your fingers... and feel your fingers. It went slow. It took me over an hour a piece to terminate the cable ends. It took me another hour to patch the two new cables together.

Testing them went badly. I couldn't feel my fingers and had to re-terminate a number of strands that didn't work right.

It was getting dark when I put a metal case on the spliced cable and called it a day.

I left the site after five. The construction crew was happy that I could get it fixed quickly. Maybe I should have strung it out but it was just too damned cold.

I made my bucks the old fashioned way today: I did something no one else wanted to do. I went into the coldest hole in Dixie and came out the winner. :king:

And... went home and soaked in a hot bath.

If you are of a certain age and twisted outlook, you probably know and love the Far Side. I sure do. For years it was the only reason I subscribed to the @&*^%ing! paper.

Here are a few of my old favorites.

A couple of months ago I joined a gym. I wanted to get a jump on the resolutions thing. That never works.

I started a program 4 times a week and have stuck to it. A lot of times I go daily depending on my schedule.

I put most of the time into cardio and ride an exercise bike for 45 minutes. For the balance of my time I hit the weights. After 2 months at it I'm seeing results and am pleased.

The right parts are getting harder and more defined. Other parts are shrinking... including my butt which will completely vanish sometime this summer if current trends continue.

All of my jeans have become hazardous to wear. Since my butt has been shrinking, unless my belt is as tight as possible, they will fall off. It appears that I've worked myself into a new wardrobe.

What's happening behind isn't nearly as impressive as what up front. Even in baggy jeans, losing weight makes me look like I'm hung like a horse (because I am). I've been getting looks from people who never noticed me and am really enjoying ignoring them.

My chest and arms haven't looked this good in years. My legs are getting cut.

MY dilemma now is do I go ahead with the new wardrobe or wait until I'm farther along?

I'll have to start looking at Walmart and Sears.

I'm wearing old Levi 501s that haven't seen daylight since the eighties.

I may not be "hot" but I'm a hell of a lot "warmer" than I used to be.

You may commence hitting on me, fighting over me and giggling like school girls. You won't hurt my feelings.

    New Years Restitutions

I resolve to smoke more, drink more, do drugs, gain weight, have more sex, eat red (and other) meat, get in more fights, be more evil and anything else that I can think of that will make my Tom-cat look at me and say, "you d' man".

Back around Halloween I was hit with some minor flooding. Anyone who has been hit by flooding can tell you it's never minor. It sucks. It's a major hassle. I have finally gotten things worked out.

One of my aims was to re work my office and after a solid two weeks of work (which is still ongoing) here are the results.

I've installed a U-shaped desk in one end of the room, added bookshelves and an entertainment center from this millennium. It's been fun but a lot of work.

This is the left side of the "U". It's cluttered as I am still getting things settled. That's my laptop which has been keeping things going.

This is the right side of the "U" with 2 gigs of data storage space, the network underneath and a whiteboard.

Bookshelves! It's great to have it all in a bookshelf and NOT on the floor. The :icon_cat: is upset as he no longer has piles of books to knock over.

My TV and stereo. I like to listen to death metal when I write.

    BUh-wa-ha-ha-ha!

I've often heard people say why live somewhere where there are tornadoes/floods/hurricanes/earthquakes/tsunamis/stampeding water buffalo but the truth is that disaster can hit anywhere. You just have to decide to build it back better than it was before.

Wow. The last week has been a blur.

Last Saturday night I got a call from my Aunt. My uncle died. The funeral was Tuesday.

So soon after my Dad's death, it brought it all back. Another military funeral. Another flag draped coffin. Another soldier from a forgotten, unpopular war.

It pissed me off. So I wrote Valhalla. I'll be posting it soon.

Wednesday morning I drove my Mom to Dallas to have Thanksgiving at my brothers house. Traffic sucked. It took 3 hours to get from Canton, Texas to Flower Mound. I thought I would go postal.

After we got there all was well. My sister-in-law outdid herself in the kitchen. Thanksgiving was great and my brother and I watched the Texas-Texas A&M game.

Black Friday I went to my favorite book store on the planet: Recycled Books in the Opera House at Denton, TX. We ate at a nice Italian restaurant. I had mussels & shrimp on pasta.

This morning we walked the Grapevine Mills Mall, had lunch at Animia's and drove back.

Easier said than done. It's four hundred something miles from Dallas to Jackson. It took eith hours. I got Mom home at 9 and I straggled in at 10.

Tomorrow... I plan on doing- not much.

    Watch Video

The Broken clock is a comfort
    It helps me sleep tonight
    Maybe it can stop tomorrow
    From stealing all my time
And I am here still waiting
Though I still have my doubts
    I am damaged at best
    Like you've already figured out

    I'm falling apart
    I'm barely breathing
    With a broken heart
    That's still beating
    In the pain
    There is healing
    In your name
    I find meaning
So I'm holding on (I'm holdin on)(I'm holdin on)
I'm barely holding on to you

The broken locks were a warning
    You got inside my head
I tried my best to be guarded
    I'm an open book instead
And I still see your reflection
    Inside of my eyes
    That are looking for purpose
    They're still looking for life

    I'm falling apart
    I'm barely breathing
    With a broken heart
    That's still beating
In the pain (In the pain)
    Is there healing
    In your name
    I find meaning
So I'm holding on (I'm still holdin on)(I'm holdin on)
(I'm still holdin on) (I'm holdin on)
I'm barely holding on to you

    I'm hanging on another day
Just to see what, you will throw my way
And I'm hanging on, to the words you say
You said that I will, will be okay
The broken light on the freeway
    Left me here alone
I may have lost my way now
But I haven't forgotten my way home

    I'm falling apart
    I'm barely breathing
    With a broken heart
    That's still beating
In the pain (In the pain)
    There is healing
In your name (In your name)
    I find meaning
So I'm holding on (I'm still holdin')(I'm holdin' on)(I'm still holdin') (I'm holdin' on) (I'm still holdin')
Barely holding on to you (I'm still holdin on)
    Barely holdin on to you

The Worst Day Since Yesterday by Flogging Molly's album Swagger

    Listen

Well I know, I miss more than hit
With a face that was launched to sink
An' I seldom feel, the bright relief
It's been the Worst Day Since Yesterday

If there's one thing I have said
Is that the dreams I once had, now lay in bed
As the four winds blow, my wits through the door
It's been the Worst Day Since Yesterday

Fallin' down to you sweet ground
    Where the flowers they bloom
    It's there I'll be found

Hurry back to me, my wild Colleen
It's been the Worst Day Since Yesterday

Though these wounds have seen no wars
Except for the scars I have ignored
And this endless crutch, well it's never enough
It's been the Worst Day Since Yesterday

Hell says hello, well it's time to I should go
To pastures green, that I've yet to see

Hurry back to me, my wild Colleen
It's been the Worst Day Since Yesterday

I joined a gym about a month ago. My last gym went bankrupt and left me hanging with four months of dues.

I know the owner and like the equipment so I have a lot more confidence. I haven't worked out regularly for a while so I decided to start with a lot of aerobic stuff. I didn't touch a weight for a couple of weeks.

Every morning I first started I spent 45 minutes to an hour on a stationary bike.

Once I got my stamina back, I cut the time on the bike down and have started in on the weights. The gym has Nautilus and Hammer-strength equipment and I can focus on a specific area and work out strong every day. I'm pleased with my progress. The lats are showing up and the abs are moving towards acceptable and away from abominable.

People work out in shifts and its easy to tell the contenders from the pretenders.

One of the people that works out on the same schedule as I do is a cute Puerto-Rican guy who looks 20 but is really thirty. We spot for each other and talk- he likes to have someone to talk to because it helps him with his English. I like talking to him because he's hotter than white phosphorus.

When he came back from his last deployment, he came here to work with a friend in construction and I must say: he is well built.

I'm tired tonight. Tomorrow after a HARD workout, it's off to the sauna.

    My computer lives!

I got it running this evening.

Sure, I like my laptop but it's just not the same.

I had to replace my UPS. It was on the floor and got wet. Everything else I broke down and stashed in the attic.

My recovery from the Halloween flood continues.

    I'm Ba-ack. Buh-wa-ha-haha

On the way home from work I got a frantic call from my Mom- "Help! I've got water coming in!"

We have had one of the wettest Octobers on record and got a huge splash of rain Thursday & Friday: 6 1/2" in 14 hours. A creek near my Mom's house had gotten dammed up by logs and sentiment and flooded her garage and kitchen.

I moved her car and fridge before it got wet so yeah! big win. I found where the creek was backing up and managed to break it lose. It drained off quickly and left me with an ugly mess to clean up.

It was after 12 so I go home thinking its over right?

    Wrong.

My house flooded too. Worse- it flooded in the living areas in the back. I've got a worse mess than my Mom's house. 2 inches of water makes one hell of a mess.

First things first- I tear down my desktop and my hard drives and put them in the attic. with stereo gear, speakers and etc.

Bad news- lots of stuff is ruined, I've got tons of drywall work to do. I've been running the washer-dryer 24/7 cleaning up clothes towels and other junk that got wet. I can't be sure how the furniture will take it. Best case, I might need to strip and stain some stuff. Worst case it'
ll warp so bad, it'll be useless. I won't know until later this week.

Thank goodness for my laptop! I won't be ready to put my PC back together until mid-week.

It's a pain in the ass of course but nothing that we haven't prepared for. Katrina was a disaster. This is but a pimple on the buttocks of life. It'll cost me a lot of time and effort to clean up.

The Bright Side: I get to redecorate my bedroom and will probably spring for some new office furniture so all it amounts to is a large nuisance.
  16. JamesSavik
I got this idea from a prank I pulled some years ago and thinking about it- whoa... this story could kick major ass.

Prankster kid is instantly swept up in a web in international intrigue and ends up wanted by the FBI, Mossad, FSB, Homeland inSecurity and terrorists!

    What do you think!?

Does this sound like fun or am I dain bramaged? No wait. I'm dain bramaged and it sounds like fun... or does it just sound like fun because of my dain bramage?

Two nations and their allies fought a tremendous war over oil.

One of them was militaristic and aggressive. The other was more interested in building their economy.

It started when the militaristic nation attacked a weaker, backwards nation that could barely defend herself. The militant nation turned their war machine on the weaker nation, slaughtering her population and looting her resources.

Horrified by the attack on a nation that could barely defend herself, the economic powerhouse placed an oil embargo on the militant nation- starving her war machine of vital fuel and dooming her military expansion. The militant nation was left with only a year and a half of oil reserves.

The militant nation did the only thing that she knew how to do within their code of honor: a year later she launched a horrific attack on the economic powerhouse and seized the oil resources that her military machine needed to operate.

Does this sound familiar? Am I talking about Iraq, Iran or the United States?

Of course not. The militant nation was Imperial Japan. The economic powerhouse was the United States. The backwards victim was China. The rest was a small affair called World War II in the Pacific in which millions died in combat, starvation and disease.

That's the funny thing about history. Nobody pays attention to it and we end up at the same dance about once every fifty years or so.

    It is about that time.
  18. JamesSavik
Today I've been clean and sober 5 years.

I've been through a lot of changes in that time- not all of them for the better. Seen some difficult times that I would have really rather been somewhere else.

It's not easy starting again after 40. If you use drugs and alcohol, I suggest getting clean and sober earlier. People love to give second chances to young people. When you are older, I guess they figure that you should know better. It's much harder and takes more grit than most people have.

    Four Win Teams:

Vikings- Looked strong against divisional rival Green Bay. Play the Lambs week 5 and then have the Ravens.

Broncos- Will have to continue to play well because they have the Pats, Chargers and Ravens over the next three weeks.

Colts- Have the Titans, Lambs and 49ers over the next 3 weeks and may have a legit shot at coasting to 7-0.

Giants- Play the Raiders and get the Saints in week 6.

Saints- The Saints won with something that they aren't known for: defense. In fact, their defense outscored their offense against the Jets. They are off week 5 but have the Giants in week 6.

    3-1 Teams

The Pats- showed guts and grit against the Ravens. Have the Broncos coming up.

Da Bears- Broke the Lions winning streak at one. Will have to step up their game with the Falcons and the Bengals over the next two weeks.

The Jets- The Saints blitz exposed Sanchez and he can expect to see every possible blitz package over the next few weeks. But with the Dolphins, Bills and Raiders will it really matter?

49ers- The Niners are playing better ball than they have in a very long time but they've got the Falcons, Texans and Colts over the next three weeks. We'll have a better idea how much improved that they are.

Bengals- Are a much improved team but we'll see how much after they play the Ravens, Texans and Bears over the next three weeks.

Ravens- Are looking good so far but they have the Bengals, Vikings and Broncos and all three are playing well.

    The Rest

Jags- Have the Seahawks, Lambs and Titans and their fortunes are looking up.

Steelers- easily handled the Chargers and have the Lions, Stains and Vikings coming up.

Cowboys- I don't like Philips or Romo but the Cowboys benefit with a soft schedule with the Cheifs, Falcons and Seahawks coming up. This may give them a chance to put some things in order before they get to their divisional opponents.

Chargers- Play old rivals Broncos, Cheifs and Raiders over the next three weeks. They are simply too inconsistent to call. Maybe they'll go 2-1.

Texans- A surprise team flirting with respectability, expect the Texans to fall apart in October: they've got the Cards, Bengals and 49ers over the next three weeks and don't have the horses to handle handle any of them.

    Games of the Week
    ____________________

Patriots-Broncos Easily the best game of the week. [Pats]

Falcons-49ers A good game to see two much improved teams show what they've got. [49ers]

Bengals-Ravens The Bengals have come a long way. We'll see how far in how well they do against the Ravens. [Ravens]

Jets-Dolphins Unless the Dolphins are in complete disarray, they'll play the Jets close. [Jets]

    Other Games

These should be easy wins for the favorite but who knows? Some of the favorites are playing very inconsistent ball.

    Cowboys-Cheifs
    Redskins-Panthers
    Vikings-Rams
    Steelers-Lions
    Raiders-Giants
    Bucs-Eagles
    Browns-Bills
    Jags-Seahawks
    Texans-Cards

    Week 4 Picks

    Ravens-Pats Ravens
    Saints-Jets Saints (at home)
    Cowboys-Broncos Broncos (at home)
    Chargers-Steelers Steelers
    Packers-Vikings Vikes

    4 for 5!
  20. JamesSavik
    Three Win Teams:

Vikings- There is reason for optimism in Viking country. With Peterson running and Farve showing flashes of that old bayou magic, the Vikes look to be closer to making a run than they have been in years.

Denver- Call me back when they play somebody- oops, they've got Dallas next week... but is Dallas anybody?

Colts- are expected to be a playoff team from a weak division. Theier real test is how far they get once they get in the playoffs.

Giants- whuppin' Tampa Bay doesn't impress as much as beating the Cowboys at their home opener.

Jets- are another team that hasn't really been tested yet. We'll see how good they are this weekend when they visit the Saints in the Superdome.

Ravens- have the Pats and the Vikings in the next three weeks.

Saints- beat a good Buffalo team and have a lot of peoples attention. Their first real test will be the Jets this weekend.

    The Rest

The Pats beat the Falcons this weekend and Brady looked more like the Brady we remember. He exposed the Falcon secondary... but he exposes a lot of peoples secondary. How the Birds shore things up on defense is going to make a big difference in how far they go. Are the Pats back? We'll see. Their schedule looks like 10 miles of bad road. The Falcons have open date to fugure things out.

The Pack won their second as did the Bears and it looks like a three way dog fight for the NFC North Division is shaping up.

The Lions broke the longest losing streak and beat Jim Zorn's Redskins. It had to happen- Stafford is a good young QB and the Lions can look forward to better days.

The Bengals are playing better football than they have in years. If they keep it up, they could translate a soft schedule into a Wild Card. It's too early to call them a surprise team but they look good. I might quit calling them the Bungles.

What happened to the Jags? For the last few years they have been the best team nobody had ever heard of but they are 1-2 this season and have not looked good. Their schedule is kind: they have the Titans-Seahawks-Lambs coming up so they have a chance to recover but that defense doesn't look nearly as scary as it was last year.

    Games of the Week
    ____________________

Ravens-Pats A real test for both teams: are the Pats physical enough and can the Ravens contain Brady?

Saints-Jets This might be the game of the week. Two unbeaten teams that are both playing well- it doesn't get any better.

Cowboys-Broncos The first real test of the Broncos: can Orton move the ball against the Dallas defense and can the Broncos defense handle the Dallas ground game. Will Romo play like he is capable of playing or will he look startled?

Chargers-Steelers Anybody's ball game. Roethlisberger needs to play better and the Chargers need to focus. Whoever gets it together will win and, you can bet both teams will spend some time in the hot-tub after this one.

Packers-Vikings This is the game a lot of people a lot of people are waiting to see. Farve will face his old team- two years after retiring. I'm thinking the Vikes have the talent edge but the Packers are going to be pissed. Call it the Black & blue bowl because you can bet these two old rivals will go after each other in this one.

    Other Games

    Giants-Cheifs
    Bungles-Brown Stains
    Bucs-Deadskins
    Colts-Seahawks
    Raiders-Texicans
    Lions-Bears
    Bills-Dolphins
    Titans-Jags

Why is Norv Turner head coach at San Diego?

When you look at his resume, you have to wonder what San Diego was thinking when they hired him.

His best years were at Dallas as offensive coordinator during the glory days of 1992-93 when Jerry Jone's Cowboys had Troy Aikman in his prime and won back to back super bowls.

When you get past the super bowls, the best records that he has achieved as a head coach have been 10-6 with the Washington Redskins in 1999 and 11-6 with a good San Diego team that he inherited from Marty Schottenheimer in 2007.

During his Washington Redskins career 1994-2000 he was 49-59 and at Oakland from 2003-2004 he was 9-23. NOT exactly a scintillating performance. Granted, Turner coached for two of the leagues worst owners, Schneider at Washington and Al Davis at Oakland. He has run out of excuses at San Diego because he has a very talented team with Philip Rivers and Ladamien Thomlinson and has been given a free hand by the owner.

While he appears to be a competent offensive coordinator, his track record as a head coach is nothing special.

IMHO- the Chargers should have a look at Jon Gruden.

Is this the NFL's example of the Peter Principal? It is said that In a Hierarchy Every Employee Tends to Rise to His Level of Incompetence. You don't have to watch much NFL football to figure out that anything that works will be used in progressively more challenging applications until it fails. Just wait until defensive coordinators figure out that if you run blitz the Wildcat you will completely neuter it.
    Games to watch this weekend:

Titans-Jets: if the Jets are a good team, they'll win the games that they should. The Jets should beat the Titans but you can be sure that Jeff Fisher will have a trick or two in store.

Packers-Rams: Can the Pack turn it around or will they go 0-3?

Falcons-Patriots: The Falcons are on the rise and the once vaunted Patriots are fading fast. Tune in this Sunday to the long running soap-opera As Belichicks Stomach Churns. If the Pats start at 0-3, they will have a very hard time in the ultra competetive AFC East.

Saints-Bills: The Bills may be the first real test that the Saints have seen so far. They are a big surprise and appear to be one of the most improved teams in the league.

Dolphins-Chargers: Norv had better strap it on for this one. The Dolphins may be the best 0-2 team in the league and they are pissed after their loss on Monday night. The Chargers can't afford to lose this one.

Panthers-Cowboys(MNF): If the Cowboys can't beat the 0-2 Panthers (with Delhomme performing dreadfully so far), don't expect Dallas's owner Jerry Jones to be patient with Philips or the lackluster play of Romo. The Cowboys have looked sluggish and uninspired so far and Jones has to be unhappy with the play of his under achieving millionaires. Either way, the Boys are under pressure to produce.

    My picks:

    Titans-Jets Jets
    Packers-Rams Pack
    Falcons-Patriots the Birds
Saints-Bills the Saints in a shoot out
    Dolphins-Chargers Fins
    Panthers-Cowboys Boys

Now as far as cynical old bastards go, I'm right in there with them. I'm not easily impressed by classless oafs making millions of dollars for being steroid enhanced freaks of nature.

Tonight the Colts and the Dolphins earned their money. There was no phoning it in or half-ass play. These teams got after each other. It was assholes and elbows all night.

Tonight's Colts-Dolphins game was one for the ages. It was a classical match up: a high powered passing offense vs an old fashioned, grinding running game very much a throwback to the offenses run in the sixties.

Peyton Manning and his receivers were brilliant. He threw an 80 yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage.

The Dolphins were not impressed. They simply took the ball and ground it out and ate up the clock. It was tit for tat all night. As late as six minutes left in the fourth, the teams were tied.

Peyton Manning got the ball and scored quickly, giving the Colts a four point lead and forcing the Dolphins to play for a touchdown.

Chad Pennington had a chance at the end but threw a pick in the end zone with seconds left on the clock.

When it was all said and done, the Colts had the ball for only 14 minutes, 53 seconds in the game compared to the Dolphins 45 minute 7 seconds. This disparity in time of possession is the greatest ever for a team that eventually ends up winning.

Wow. If this is any indication of the kind of season that we have to look forward too, I'm stocking up on cheese nips, peanuts and nachos.

This is the show and it looks like a wild one in 2008.

Patriots are 0-2 after losing to the Jets

    Saints paste the Eagles 48-22

Bungals beat the sad-sack Pack 31-24

"Orton hears a boo" led Broncos beat the underwear Stains (the Browns) 27-6

I'll laugh at the Giant disappointments or the Cowgirls regardless of who loses the suck-fest being held in Jerry Jones ego at this hour.

If I missed laughing at your team, don't despair. You can be sure I'll be laughing at them soon.

A week ago Sunday my father passed away. It has been a difficult time around here.

My father had health problems for a long time and was becoming less and less able to get around and function. While I am sorry he is gone, I am very glad that he missed the stage where he lost his dignity. He died peacefully in his sleep and if you've got to go, there are far worse ways to depart.

As exhausting, emotional and difficult this has been, there are some unique things about southern funeral rituals.

My mothers first call was to their long time minister which set into motion a chain of events as controled and powerful as any nuclear reactor.

We had not been home from the hospital and hour when the first of the fried chicken began to arrive.

People that we had not seen in twenty years began to arrive bearing all sorts of offerings: fried chicken, casseroles, hams, cakes, pie and even home made pralines. We haven't had to cook in days which I suppose is the point.

We could not schedule the funeral until the following Thursday which is an unusually long time but it allowed people who lived at a distance more time to arrive.

So from Monday till Thursday we had many, many visitors, phone calls and even more fried chicken.

The funeral was huge. It was easily three hundred people. It was a southern baptist affair featuring old hymns like the Old Rugged Cross and In the Garden.

The graveside service was held in Pop's home town where an honor guard folded the flag, handed it to Mom and a bugler played Taps.

After the funeral I shuttled people to the airport as the extended family went home. Saturday I drove Mom to the coast where we visited relatives.

Sunday was a very hard day, especially for Mom. We sort of stayed close and did very little. Today was busy again: settling up with the funeral home and replacing a dying freezer.

I'm not sure why these things take on such a frantic pace. I suppose it is so you can't get mired in the sadness that goes with loss.

It has been a difficult time and I wish to thank everyone for their messages of support and concern. It may not seem like much but it helps.
