We had a terrible tornado that ran through Mississippi two weeks ago Friday. Many talk babblers have attributed this to climate change. It's not. The South and Mid-West are prone to seasonal tornado outbreaks. It seems worse because our population is denser. Tornadoes that used to blow down trees out in the country are more apt to hit something now.
The Rolling Fork tornado isn't even the worst tornado in our state's history. In 1966, an EF-5 destroyed a large swath of South Jackson, killed three scores of people and went as far as Alabama. That's NOT climate change. It's seasonal weather for our region.

    Candlestick Park Tornado Outbreak, 1966

If you are thinking holy shit, how do you live with that, think it through. Every part of our planet is prone to some sort of some natural calamity. Sure, the really horrific ones like asteroid impacts and tsunamis are extremely rare, but they can happen. The West Coast has earthquakes, wildfires and sleeping supervolcanos. The East Coast has ancient earthquake faults that quiver sporadically and if the Cumbre Vieja Volcano were to blow, everyone from Florida to Maine might surf to the Midwest.
Life is not a safe condition. Live it well. It can end instantly with no warning.
Is that a tornado siren? DOH!

My Mom is in hospice care. I'm glad someone else is doing it because I just couldn't.
I'm going to lose her, but in truth, she's already gone.
I keep going to her bedside and reading to her. She smiles. I know she hears me.
It won't be long now. She has Dysphagia, an inability to swallow, and is losing weight rapidly.
If I vanish for a while, I have much to do.

As of this writing, the Agricultural Colonies of Evergreen, New Turin, Ukrainia, Silesia, Moskava, and Luzon have filed an official Article 100 request for representation in the Alliance Senate. Who do they think they are?
They are six worlds with populations exceeding five hundred million, with self-sufficient local economies and industry, and the infrastructure required by Alliance law of a Class 1 world. Furthermore, those worlds are the Alliance's breadbasket, feeding billions in the core worlds and beyond. The growth of those worlds is nothing short of explosive. Evergreen alone, despite its uniquely dangerous ecology, will pass one billion citizens before the end of the fiscal year.
Who do these colonials think they are? They are the pioneers and their decedents who took these empty worlds and built them from the ground up. They are geneticists who genegeneered the crops that feed billions. They are the farmers and ranchers who feed billions. Their accomplishments, energy, enterprise and vitality are nothing short of astonishing.
Then why are they not represented in the Alliance Senate? That is a very dangerous question because the answer isn't what you've been told. No. They aren't immature societies. No. They aren't economically dependent on the core-worlds. No. Their beliefs may be old-fashioned, but they are by no means heretical. No. They are not inhabited completely by ignorant, bare-foot hicks. No. They aren't a threat to muh democracy.
To answer the question of who do they think they are, they believe that they are part of a grand democratic institution called the Interstellar Alliance. They believe they are a part of the brotherhood of mankind. They are mistaken.
For many years, the grand experiment in interstellar democracy called the Interstellar Alliance has been quietly becoming a Corpocracy. The sad truth is that the reason those worlds don't already have their own Senators is that no megacorp owns or controls those worlds. Were they to have senate delegations, this would dilute the solid block of votes of Core World own in the senate that allow that body to do anything its corporate masters want.
If you want to know who truly threatens our democracy, you need only look towards the Core, the Corporations that have their seats on those worlds and the senators that they own. There's an old joke about senators should have to wear the patches of their corporate sponsors. Senator Harrison of Earth might as well have DESERD tattooed on his face. Bronson of Centauri B, should wear the logo of MilTech. It goes on and on. Regardless of party, philosophy or leaning, they are representing their corporate sponsors first, and the people last.
When you hear the corporate shills denounce the colonial bumpkins, ask them to be sure they aren't speaking with their mouths full. The Colonials feed the core worlds, and that provides powerful leverage. All they need to do is stop shipments of their agricultural goods for a week, and the Core is in trouble. In two weeks, food inflation would be out of control. In a month, there would be food riots.
This is a dangerous schism. Neither side can opt out. No one relinquishes power gladly or gracefully. The Alliance is headed for yet another crossroads. Will it live up to its own laws and seat a dozen new Colonial senators, or will it continue to find excuses to retain the whip hand?
This issue isn't going away, and it needs to be settled soon.  Much depends on this vote. These colonies aren't the only colonies that are watching. Will they too be disenfranchised from the highest levels of power when it is supposed to be their turn? What good is an Alliance that won't even follow its own rules?
This, ladies and gentlemen, is the rub. Do we live by the rules set down by law, or continue to move the goalposts in favor of the powerful?
Be careful how you answer because we're all going to have to live with the results.

"Darling, you must know at least half our guests will be spies."
"Theonia, it's rude to call them spies on this planet. Thracians call them the press."
Her Slavic smile always won any arguments, "Sorry Senator Harry. You shouldn't have married a daughter of New Moskava."
The couple's twins arrived from the stairs that went up to the residence. Senator Harry Hanson looked up and motioned for them to come down, and they reluctantly approached. Bryan and Ryan, who were at 16 a pair of the youngest of the Gemini Soldiers liberated during the Corporate War, were not thrilled to be here. There were many more interesting things for teens to do during the week-long celebration of the end of the Rim War than a stuffy old press conference.
Theonia and Harry were filled with a huge swell of pride in the boys.
Harry said, "Thanks for being good sports about this. I know you hate this kind of thing. How is your buddy Jeff?"
Bryan said, "It's important, but I hope we can get back to the Ski Lodge soon."
"Jeff is pretty nervous. He wants to get back, too," Ryan shrugged, "You would think he had never been on a holovid before."
Theonia said, "Some people don't like having their pictures all over the galaxy. Do we know who the interviewer will be?"
Harry said, "Jessica Sang, Landing City Times."
"Ohhh... an actual serious journalist," Ryan cracked.
Bryan smacked his brother and said, "At least our pictures won't end up on the teen boards like last time."
Harry's personal assistant chimed and said, "The News conference will be ready in the Mesa Room in fifteen minutes."
"Call your friend. We need to start now."
The two teens quickly disappeared back up the stairs.

Every Thanksgiving week for many years, I've prepared a Lasagna on Monday.
The reason for this is quite logical. I love it, and have been making it for years. In a week dominated by cooking a turkey, how did lasagna become involved?
To answer that question, we must travel back in time to a golden age: the late eighties. The family gets together, we have a turkey feast and football. So, before traveling to my parents, I made a lasagna. It's one of my best recipes and it always turns out good.
My mother and her sisters, who had the kitchen in a state of disaster, were DELIGHTED at the appearance of the unanticipated lasagna. They put it in the oven and were no longer distracted by having to make lunch or dinner on that crucial Tuesday and Wednesday of Thanksgiving week.
This became my Thanksgiving tradition. I always make a lasagna on Monday and it's always a hit. The turkey and all the trimmings are for Thursday. However, smelling all of that cooking makes you hungry. Having lasagna on hand makes the whole thing work.
So... happy Thanksgiving. I hope you enjoy a square of lasagna! Think of it as an appetizer.

You have to know them to understand, but they do.
When they are missing someone, they look for them, call for them, and wait for them in their usual places.
After a while, somehow they know their person isn't coming back, and it's heartbreaking to watch.

    caregiving, loss
In 2017, my elderly mother fell and broke her hip. She was ninety at the time. I became a full-time caregiver.
Her hip was fixed by surgery, but she needed time to recover and physical therapy to allow her to stand and walk with a walker. It took some time to get her there, but she was able to dress and take care of herself. I had to fix meals, do all the household chores.
This has been a long, hard grind. Rather than getting better, it was a long, slow decline.
In February, Mom had another fall. She fractured the bone of her hip socket. This is better by far than breaking a bone, but in come ways, it was worse. She went to a rehab place after her hospital stay, and that was a big mistake. She couldn't do anything on that hip for six weeks as it healed. So, she went to a rehab that was unable to do any rehab.
I paid for two extra months, and she came home May 1st with home physical therapy. In July, she started getting weaker and weaker. I was alarmed and took her to the doctor, and they said she was as well as she could be for a 96-year-old.
Last week she had a fever and I took her to the ER. She had a bad infection and was in the hospital until Friday, when she was discharged to an "elder care facility".
I don't think she'll be coming home. I feel like a failure, but I know I've done my best for her.
She is my last blood relative.
If you live long enough, you may find yourself alone, simply because you've outlived them.

    Continuity of Government (COG)

First really became a serious concern in the fifties at the height of the Cold War, when everyone with a chemistry set was playing with weapons of mass destruction. This made a whole generation of officers, who made their spurs after the surprise attacks on Pearl Harbor, extremely worried.

COG (Continuity of Government) are the contingencies, plans, and facilities to continue government activities and operations after a major attack or large-scale natural disaster. Considerable efforts were made over the years of the Cold War to ensure the continuity of government. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was created by an executive order during the Carter administration. It eventually grew to the point of being cabinet-level. Numerous facilities are scattered all over the country in out-of-the-way places. Each agency is responsible for creating and maintaining its Continuity of Operations Plan (COO).

There was a happy decade after the fall of the Soviet Union when COG was just a paranoid Cold War era nightmare. Many facilities were shut down or mothballed. Funding was slashed.

It took the 9/11 attacks to move COG forward with new funding and legislation. The Department of Homeland Security was established, and the Patriot Act was passed.

The United States COG plan is robust, established, and well-funded.

Any foreign or domestic enemy who wished to settle accounts with the United States or topple its government altogether must understand that it will take a titanic effort. The United States is dug-in deep in facilities built to withstand nukes. The citizens may be dead in the hundreds of millions, but by God, the IRS will survive to tax the cockroaches.

    mad ramblings
    Aliens are not invading.
Why would a civilization who can cross light-years invade us with weather balloons?
Now, we Vampyre, we've been here all along.
Hollywood never did get us right, despite all the hints we dropped. Bela Legosi? Humph! Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt were better, but they've never done us justice.
We were stranded on Earth, oh about sixty thousand of your human years ago. If that date rings a bell, that was when Neanderthals went into a steep decline and modern man became dominant. No need to than us. Neanderthal was... pretty useless. One sniff of a female and they lost their minds. Don't be conceited, some of you modern men have the same problem.
Vampyre are just like anyone else. Some are good, some are bad, some are apathetic, and some are mad as hatters.
One lie from Hollywood we really resent is that we drink blood. Nothing could be further from the truth. The truth is, we do need something from you, but it's hard to explain. We need what you humans might call life energy. We drain a little, you get sleepy, and it's been restored when you wake. No need for murder and the associated mess.
Yes. We can take too much, but only the mad ones do that. When the Council discovers a rogue, they are dealt with and will never be a problem for humans or Vampyre again.
Damn. I've said too much. Don't worry. You won't remember a thing when you wake...

    recipes, southern
OK. I'm going to provide you one of my secret recipes. Don't spread it around. This salsa makes others look sad. It's not blazing hot, but it is delicious!
    Needed:
    Food Processor
Dried chili peppers: 1 each Ancho, Pasilla and Mulato (Chosen to be mild, if you want hotter salsa, pick hotter peppers)
    5 large tomatillos
1 Jalapeno pepper, cored without seeds
    3 cloves garlic
    1 medium-sized white onion
    1 teaspoon salt

    Instructions:
1 - with the dried Ancho, Pasilla and Mulato peppers, remove the stems and seeds, and boil for twenty minutes in a pint of water.
2 - once boiled, put the now hydrated peppers into your food processor with 1/2 cup of the water they were boiled in
3 - run food processor and make sure the peppers are well shredded, set aside
    4 - heat oven to 450 (232.2 C)
5 - cover a cookie sheet with foil
6 - cut tomatillos in half and put on foil, cut side down. Also place Jalapeno and garlic on foil
7 - roast tomatillos, pepper and garlic in the oven for 15 minutes
8 - quarter the onion and place in the food processor
9 - Add 2 tablespoons of the Ancho, Pasilla and Mulato mix to the food processor, save the rest.
10- Add salt, roasted tomatillos, garlic, Jalapenos, and drippings from the cookie sheet to the food processor.
11- Run the food processor, and you're done.

This recipe has a citrus, smoky flavor with modest heat. If you want more heat, pick hotter peppers, like Serranos or hot Jalapenos. This recipe works well at a Super Bowl party where not everyone wants a fiery salsa.
The additional pepper mixture that I haven't used will be in my next batch of chili.

Jeff Beck died Jan. 10th. I can't describe how good he was as a guitarist. He was enormously talented, played for the Yardbirds and, practically, everybody else in rock. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice - once was a Yardbird and again as a solo artist.
Jeff Beck Dies Suddenly of Meningitis (ABC)
    Here's one of my favorites.
If you have a streaming service, do yourself a favor and look for some of his work. I suggest the albums Blow by Blow, Wired or There and Back. His work transcended genres spanning rock, blues and, jazz. He was a great influence on music and was known to often work with promising young artists.
    I'm going to miss him.

    Interesting stuff
The Hunga-Tonga Eruption may have had something to do with the severity of this winter.   This eruption occurred slightly less than a year ago (2022 Jan 15) and was classified as a five on the Volcanic Explosivity Index(VEI). Some may even argue it was as much as a six. In the case of this volcanic eruption, satellites recorded the entire thing and showed the explosive plume reaching the mesosphere.   There have been many incidents of volcanic cooling in our history. The massive eruption of Mount Tambora in present-day Indonesia caused the Year Without a Summer in 1816. Many Volcanic Winters have been discovered by carefully examining historical records and ice cores from the arctic.   There are two schools of thought on the actual mechanism that creates this condition: a) the volume of material and b)the height at which the material is when it is blasted into the atmosphere. Once this gas and dust get in the jet stream, it is distributed worldwide.

Paramount has done such a fine job with Star Trek, turning it over to the 10,000 Woke Monkey's Typing script shop, Gene Roddenberry wouldn't even recognize it and would be horribly embarrassed by it.
Star Trek offered an optimistic, idealistic post-scarcity vision of the future. It offered insights into technology that inspired its child viewers to grow up, become engineers and invent the tech. What the hell were they thinking? They took something inspiring and wonderful, then shit all over it.
As someone who actually tries when I write, I am enraged by low-energy efforts that will be published or produced anyway. Especially on established franchises with significant cultural importance and impact. There is fan-fiction better written and more thoughtful than the video diarrhea Paramount has excreted in its latest round of ABJECT FAILURE with this franchise.
With such a rich heritage, telling a decent story and following cannon should be a labor of love. Instead, it's an F-ing labor to watch in its current state.
After Pic-tard and Douche-covery, I doubt the whole franchise is worth more than about tree-fiddy max.

It'll probably be sold out of the trunk of a meth dealer's car.
God knows what sacrilege the next bunch of Hollywood fuk-wits will get up to with it. My hopes Trek's legacy will be treated with any respect are about ZERO because that optimism and hope is something the WOKE machine cannot tolerate in its serfs. It needs us hopeless and broken to tolerate its future vision.

    humor
Speaking as a tekkie, there are times when you have a huge charlie-foxtrot on your hands and there's nothing you can do about it. A tiny little resistor, capacitor or transistor decided to commit suicide and takes your system with him. It's totally NOT your fault, but you are the TEKKIE on the spot and take the heat for it anyway.
Having been there and done that, I suggest 1) have a thick skin and 2) a sense of humor.
Murphy will visit you. It's going to take you x amount of time to figure out what's wrong and fix it. Depending on how fast you can perform that x will make you anything from a Tekkie Super-hero to that guy running from an angry mob with torches.
Laugh about it. Take the joke. There's nothing for it but to embrace the suck.
You really win when you can make your victims... opps, I mean customers laugh, you might survive.
This guy's Technical Difficulties screensaver is the right idea.

1 Make the wild rice according to directions.
2 Dice the onion, bell pepper and garlic
3 Combine vegetables, wild rice and shrimp in a mixing bowl and stir evenly

This is a recipe lost to our family years ago when the aunt who always made it passed away. I've been valiantly trying to reconstruct the recipe, and I think this iteration is probably as close as I will get.
This is a good recipe to make a day or two before Thanksgiving or Christmas and throw it in the oven before the feast.

I was new at school and a kid I played sports with invited me over Saturday and said, bring a couple of your favorite albums - the more obscure, the better. We love hearing new stuff.
HAA! Boy could I ever do obscure. I took Can Future Days, Yes Close to the Edge and ELP Tarkus.
This wasn't exactly a party. It was just a few dudes with albums showing up with chips and snacks and listening to music.
It was always cool. We got to hear new stuff. I literally heard Kansas for the first time at one of these get-togethers.
This isn't something that I've ever seen anyone doing since. Something cool has been lost.
This is a custom I would love to see make a comeback.
Just a reminder to some authors of some things we did for fun back in the day.

Meet my pal, Jeb Stuart. We met one-day last spring and I knew we were going to be pals from the start. He was a young Tom riding on the back of a terrified medium-sized dog. I fed Jeb and eventually tamed him enough to adopt him.   Why Jeb Stuart? We live in Mississippi, he's gray and obviously a cavalry man.

I've been working on it and have my collection sorted by group and release year (when known). It includes all CDs and vinyl. There is more to add but I'll be parsimonious about adding it as it is stuff I might unload on e-bay. Yes- I do have doubles of various things I might have on the trading block.

Rush was a band that got me in trouble.   Back in the mid to late 70s, my parents didn't really care what I listened to. We were far enough apart, and my stereo modest, using headphones my noise was never a nuisance. I think they actually liked some of my Yes.   The problem I had was when we had a revival preacher that was a real fire breather who preached about the devil, all of his works and his cunning snares for youth. Of course, it was this album that caused our conflict.     We fought over it but what really got me in trouble was for smarting off to the revival preacher who knew nothing about the album but was completely focused on the cover. I found this to be a recurring theme with narrow-minded people.   Of course, I replaced 2112 later and eventually had the pleasure of seeing Rush in concert three different times.   I doubt the band ever had in mind the other kind of lessons you could learn from their music.   ________________________________

How I discovered Can   My discovery of the Krautrock band Can was one of the more improbable bits of serendipity to fall in my lap. The improbability of a German Experimental Band's music and a Mississippi teenager crossing paths had to have been quite low.   In the 70s my family would drive into Jackson, Mississippi on weekends to shop at a big store on highway 80. It was a big, day long event not to be missed.  Just around the corner from the strip mall was Be-Bop Record Shop- a haven of rock in a sea of country & western, blue-grass and gospel.   While my parents were doing their thing, I would go to the record store where the staff would play albums. It was on one of those trips in 1975 I heard my first Can album: Tago Mago. I was intrigued by the sound and bought a copy. I got Future Days on a later trip.   None of my friends had ever heard of Can. If they listened to it, they would admit it was good. If it wasn't something popular all the kids listened to, too many of them were afraid to be different. I, on the other hand, excelled at different.   If you follow the crowd, you all end up in the same place. I dislike crowds. They're too crowded.

    prompts
    I saw a prompt on Reddit I couldn't resist.
A prankster in the future rigged a tank with speakers blasting heavy metal, traveled back to the 1400s, and went on a 2 month havoc filled joyride. Now in 2022 you are reading the legends born from those that witnessed this event.

"Angus laddie, whatever is that bloody racket?
    "It sounds like thunder sire."
    "Is that music?"
"Aye sire. After a fashion, I suppose."
Say your prayers, little one Don't forget, my son To include everyone
"That's... decidedly odd. It sounds like it's coming this way. "
The Leopard A3A1 series main battle tank roared into view at a little over sixty KPH leaping over the rise throwing up a rooster tail of mud and debris. The two astonished Scotsmen peed their kilts with mouths agape as the monster with 500 watt PA speakers blared as it roared by on its unknowable mission.
I tuck you in, warm within Keep you free from sin Till the Sandman he comes Sleep with one eye open Gripping your pillow tight
The young prince looked astonished and asked, "Did ya see that Angus?"
"No sire. Dint see a bloody thing and neither did you if ya know what's good for you."

Many people are asking: What is a DAC? And Do I want one?
A great many people play music on their phones and computers. That's all well and good, but have you ever listened to the difference between the all digital sound you get from your computer and a dedicated analog stereo system? The difference is so real it's astonishing.
There is a good nuts and bolts technical reason why analog and digital sources sound so different. It is because of the nature and the difference of analog and digital signals.
Analog sound is a continuous signal that varies in amplitude. In a dedicated stereo, even when you play a CD, that digital signal is converted to an analog signal by an internal DAC which is a Digital to Analog Converter. Every CD player has one.
Digital sound is very different. At its core, it is zeros and ones. Instead of a continuous recording, digital sound consists of numerous samples. Thousands of samples are stitched together and what you hear coming out of your speakers sounds continuous, but something is lost in the mix.

DACs (Digital to Analog Converters) take that digital signal and convert it out into a nice, smooth analog wave form. The difference in the sound is astonishing.
There are many DACs on the market that run from about one hundred to thousands of dollars. There are numerous manufacturers and many chip sets, and it all gets very technical very fast. Let's cut to the chase:
Most users who are interested in DACs want that smooth analog sound from their digital sources. It's not hard to get but, you have to know your objective.
I wanted a DAC that would allow me to listen to the digital audio on my phone and computer in an analog format, have a headphone amp and be able to connect it to my stereo with ordinary RCA jacks. Ideally, I wanted a one box solution.
After doing some research, I found my best option was the iFi Zen 2 DAC.

This DAC connects to my computer via USB, provides a headphone amp and RCA jacks that plug right into my home stereo. It can do many other tricks, but it covers what I wanted to accomplish.
The difference in the sound quality before and after installing the DAC is spectacular. Especially if you have good headphones.
Many companies are in the DAC market. You can spend a lot on a high end DAC, but that's unnecessary. There are three companies that do an impressive job on the lower end of the price scale and are worth looking into.
Cambridge Audio's DACMagic 200 is a remarkable piece of technology, but at five hundred U$, out of my price range. It would have been my choice if I could make myself pay that much. It had a lot more capability.
Schitt Audio (no it's not a joke) has an excellent line of DACs and headphone amps. They are probably the best in the market. I would have gone their way, but they were having supply chain issues and I wanted to get this done.
iFi offered the best mix of features, a one box solution and price. Their Zen DAC is impressive.

Is anyone else using a DAC? What do you have and are you happy with it?

Oops: Another reason you might want a DAC is what it can do for streaming services like Spotify or Tidal. It adds to the sound and gives it the kind of tone you were looking for when you subscribed. I suggest you look carefully at the encoding used by the streaming service and any DAC you chose because the standards are evolving.

Do you want to read or listen to music for fun? I understand perfectly. After all, what's the point otherwise?
We ask too little of our art these days. We want it to give us a few laughs. We like to be entertained, maybe excited or even frightened. We don't often ask that it teach us anything and that's a shame. That's what art is for. It's supposed to challenge you, disturb you, open your eyes, expand your consciousness and understanding.
There is another level to reading and listening. Stuff that burns a little. Might leave a mark or cuts you a little. Things at the edge that are heavy and scary and might be uncomfortable to look at. There are things that tickle your fancy and things that stretch your soul. If you are curious or adventurous enough, you might hear the call.
What's over that next hill? Is it dangerous? Will it hurt?
    YES.
You grow through discomfort. You understand by observation and experience. You learn by pain.
    Afraid?
YES. Everyone is afraid. It defines our times.
The challenge: Listen to the song. Read the lyrics. Understand- even if it's uncomfortable.
There is stuff and there is art. Stuff doesn't teach you a damned thing. Art opens your eyes and expands your consciousness. This is an exercise in seeing the difference.
The challenge is behind the spoiler. Are you up for it? BE WARNED. Here there be dragons.
