Halloween Horror

On the way home from work I got a frantic call from my Mom- "Help! I've got water coming in!"

We have had one of the wettest Octobers on record and got a huge splash of rain Thursday & Friday: 6 1/2" in 14 hours. A creek near my Mom's house had gotten dammed up by logs and sentiment and flooded her garage and kitchen.

I moved her car and fridge before it got wet so yeah! big win. I found where the creek was backing up and managed to break it lose. It drained off quickly and left me with an ugly mess to clean up.

It was after 12 so I go home thinking its over right?

Wrong.

My house flooded too. Worse- it flooded in the living areas in the back. I've got a worse mess than my Mom's house. 2 inches of water makes one hell of a mess.

First things first- I tear down my desktop and my hard drives and put them in the attic. with stereo gear, speakers and etc.

Bad news- lots of stuff is ruined, I've got tons of drywall work to do. I've been running the washer-dryer 24/7 cleaning up clothes towels and other junk that got wet. I can't be sure how the furniture will take it. Best case, I might need to strip and stain some stuff. Worst case it'

ll warp so bad, it'll be useless. I won't know until later this week.

Thank goodness for my laptop! I won't be ready to put my PC back together until mid-week.

It's a pain in the ass of course but nothing that we haven't prepared for. Katrina was a disaster. This is but a pimple on the buttocks of life. It'll cost me a lot of time and effort to clean up.

The Bright Side: I get to redecorate my bedroom and will probably spring for some new office furniture so all it amounts to is a large nuisance.

When our work place got flooded a few years back 2" of water the cut the bottom 12" of all the drywall affected and sprayed the the stud area with a bleach mixture to kill any mold that may try to form later. After it dried, they simply re-sheeted the bottom 12" and mud, tape & textured it. I don't think we had molding, if it was the case I think it was the rubberized stuff you see in office buildings. Good luck!!! MY basement flooded about ten years ago, the pool guy didn't tightened done the filter top, and I had just converted the fireplace to gas, so when the pool turned itself on automatically, it found it's way down through my fireplace.

That's unique. I've never heard of a creek being clogged up by sentiment before.biggrin.gif

Good for you James, for keeping such a positive attitude about all this.

Do you live in Louisiana? My friend lives there and his house flooded too and all the streets around his house are flooded up past his knee's and he's 6'1'' =Z

I feel for you. Georgia has been hit hard by the rain too. Here is my sad story to sit next to yours. I had four giant oaks give it up to the rain and lean dangerously over my house. I had to have emergency tree service. It took two days and a lot of hard work to keep the trees from falling and crushing my house. And the cost was astronomial. My house is safe. My yard is missing some beautiful friends. And my wallet is empty.
