I don't think anyone has the patent on world building. If any do, it should be JRR Tolkien. He was so in depth, he even developed mythology, races, languages and history. The world you build comes from your imagination. No one else can claim it.... unless you have a Hogworts, Iron Throne or a Minas Tirith.

I approach writing like cooking. To get the dish just right you need to combine the ingredients in just the right mixture. Instead of onions, peppers, garlic and celery, authors have plot, description, setting and character. Sex is like a strong spice like cayenne. When you put it in a scene, given the way human brains work, it dominates their attention. In some places a lot of spice might be justified like if you are trying to establish some things about characters and invite your readers to make assumptions about them. In other places it can be overpowering and dominate the plot. The craft is about finding that sweet spot where all the elements balance and create something special. What works for gumbo works for story.

This is the problem with "faith-based initiatives". They are anything that particular denomination, cult or coven decide they are. Authors often grind axes and two of my pet peeves, ideas so stupid only a lawyer could come up with, are adolescent treatment administered by religious fanatics and for-profit prisons. Both concepts seem to be designed with abuse and corruption in mind. In my story I will kick their asses as hard as they should be. In reality people are making billions off the prison industry and religious nuts are treating kids with psychiatric conditions with hymns and prayers.

The city jail was a temporary holding facility. It wasn’t large, but it did have facilities for juveniles separate from adult prisoners. Anyone who was going to be kept past their arraignment hearing would be sent to the county lockup. Matt Lee, the jailer on duty, had read the boys' paperwork. I have two rather large writing experiments that I've been running for a while now. I have been running them at GA because I can access them directly and don't have to go through an intermediary to post or do hot online edits. These are highly experimental, and I'm trying a lot of new and different things. I'll share my findings here. I had several goals that I wanted to achieve: Get proficient with self-editing Work on the process of outline => draft => revision Get the product out faster See how the experimental elements work. He decides that he's going to build this team and new family at the same time. Style and Experimental Elements: Each chapter is a day. It's not stream-of-consciousness but, it is quite dense with some chapters running up to 40K words. I work with a rather large cast of characters and am actively working on characterization. It is quite a monster at this point weighing in at over 285K words. It is an ongoing effort but not a front-burner project. There is much more to go. I'm not pleased with the dense style. It's a lot of work and continuity is a real pain. It has created a fun story, but it is SUPER LABOR INTENSIVE. I probably won't use the style in future work. His new job is a huge part of his personal reconstruction. He's basically a good guy, but he learns a lot about himself in the process. Style and Experimental Elements: Each chapter is one to three scenes. It is much less dense with chapters running from 1000 to 4000 words max. Again I work with a large cast but not as big as The Company. I experiment with a villain I make you hate and then admire. I show how gossip gets twisted and assumptions can be way off base. Summer Job just hit its climax and will soon be completed. It's been a fun story to write, and it's not the time sinkhole of the high density style. I've learned a lot from it and can bang out a chapter a day as long as I'm not so busy with real life I've got the time to work.

A lot of stuff has been going on the last couple of weeks. We had a spell where we had 2-24 tornadoes a day. 😮 Lost power. ☠️ I'm a caregiver of a 94-year-old who had a stomach virus. LOADS of fun. 🤢 The Computer had a nervous breakdown, but I slapped it around and shamed it back into service. F'n slacker PC! It's hard to get the story/words out when real life is yelling at you.

A story is going along just fine and CRASH! You hit the wall. I stare at the open Word doc but this time, I'm not pounding it out. My characters are pissed at me, and they aren't talking. I got a bunch of them arrested. I usually sit down and outline a chapter, but this one is ultra-murky. Tell me: What do you do when you hit the wall?

I read the thread with amusement. Dialogue and prose are definitely two different animals. It’s a rare person that speaks in the Queen’s English and, certainly not any of my characters. Usage is a tricky question but the vast majority of the time context will nail it down. Hon will always be an endearment as none of my characters would ever date a Hun.

Midway 1976, despite the cast, was a POS. It suffered from Hollywood-itis. The producers weren't satisfied with the story and decided it needed a ridiculous romantic sub-plot that did absolutely nothing for the movie. The ships in the movie were actually reserve hulks that were rusting away at Bremerton. The 2019 effort was much better in terms of historical accuracy. They used CGI to recreate the original ships. It wasn't perfect but it was better than the 76 stinker despite the legendary cast.

I'll get back to Hammerhead. In fact, I am considering a complete re-write for it. Currently, I'm doing a few experimental projects of which Summer Job and The Company are a part of. The aim of these projects is to work on a number of issues- getting stories out, getting them out timely and working on nitty-gritty, fundamentals. Outcome should be more output, better product.
