    Chapter 10

Simon was getting impatient. It was ridiculous how easily the other side was taking out members of his team. There were now seven in all. Of course Adam was the most significant but the others were all key players. He was beginning to see a pattern in the abductions and it bothered him a lot. They were taking out all the psi’s, everyone who could pick up clues and communicate with each other and..... and Adam. Even though he was shut down and had been since he was taken there was always a

    Chapter 9

The professor was right. The drugs have begun to lose their grip, or at least I am getting used to the way they make me feel and to compensate for them. I have no idea how long I have been here, I am still pretty hazy about where ‘here’ is, but I am beginning to make the connection between what is me and what is going on around me. I am beginning to understand. There are four others here. They are never here together, they take it in turns. They say they are here to take care of me but

    Chapter 8

The game goes on. Like chess when you lose a major piece you still keep fighting. Until the king goes down there is always a chance. But what do you do when the king disappears and you have no idea where to look? And what do you do when the king doesn’t even realise he’s the king so he can’t help you find him and when he happens to be your best friend in the whole world and you know him better than you know yourself and you know that he is going to be lost and frightened and confused, and ma

    Chapter 7

Meeting Daniel for the first time was a real shock. I had just come on shift and Shaun sent me upstairs to get him down for breakfast. The bastard hadn’t given me any warning at all, and I had asked. All I knew was that he was a patient of Professor Bowen. I had read his medical notes of course, I always make sure I do that thoroughly so that I know what to expect... but they never tell you anything about the person themselves. So, although I knew his blood group, his baseline heart ra

    Chapter 6

I don’t remember the journey from the hospital. There are brief flashes, images of being roused from sleep by strangers, stumbling through unfamiliar corridors and into a car. I must have slept for most of the journey for the next image is of a house, an ordinary terraced house in an ordinary street. The light was very bright and hurt my eyes and I was led inside barely aware, and then I slept; for a long time I slept. And now I am awake, somewhat. My eyes are heavy and hard to keep op

    Chapter 5

The Game has been played in every country in every era throughout the whole of time. Once in every century across the ages; two sides; one goal, to reach the end of the game, to be in the right place at the right time to win. Two teams working against each other to place the last piece and gain immeasurable power. Civilisations have risen and fallen on a turn of the game; all to win; to be the one to open the gates of power. The rules of the game are simple. There are none but knowin

    Chapter 4

“Good morning Daniel. How are you feeling today?” This time it is definitely a hospital. There is a ward, a nurse, the whole thing. But.... there is something wrong, something that doesn’t fit. It’s the noises. People are making noises, singing, crying, moaning, screaming.... “Where am I?” The nurse touches my arm. “Don’t worry, it will come.” “What happened to me?” “You’ve been poorly sweetheart, but you’re all better now.” My head feels like it is goi

    Chapter 3

“Do you think he’s alright?” “I’m certain of it.” “How can you be so sure?” “Because he’s the end player and so they need him.” “But.....” “Look Annie, the end player is the end player. Whoever wins he has to be the one who makes the final move. Without him the game can’t end and the other side want to see it through to the end as much as we do.” “But it isn’t a game. Not any more. Maybe it was in the beginning but it isn’t a game any more, at least not for Adam.”

    Chapter 2

There are voices, not whispering, talking openly but just outside the range of hearing. For some reason it is important to be still, to be very still and not let anyone know that I am awake, that I am thinking. I am lying down, flat on my back, although the bed, if that is what it is, is tilted up so I am half sitting. There is a sense of space all around, a big room, and sound echoes strangely. Not a room with a lot of soft furnishings. There are people, clearly or there would not be

    Chapter 1

It is never good news when the telephone rings in the middle of the night. Simon reached for it, rubbing his eyes and staring blearily at the clock. It was three am. “Simon, we’ve got a problem.” “Honey, my whole life is a problem at the moment. What’s so important you have to wake me at this ungodly hour?” “It’s Adam... he’s gone.” “What do you mean ‘gone’?” “I mean gone as in vanished, disappeared, not here any more.” “Tell me.” “He rang me this aft

    The Game

A story that defies description. Daniel doesn't remember that he is playing The Game. Daniel doesn't remember very much at all. He only remembers his name because that it what he's told. But what is overlooked is the simple fact that whether he knows it or not he is still playing the game and no one else can end it
  12. Daniel was burning like a dark star. The party was in full swing and he was right at the centre. That’s the way it always was but tonight more than ever. They were outside in the garden, every tree and bush lit by thousands of tiny fairy lights mirroring the myriad stars that seemed to have come out just to join in the celebrations, shining brighter than they ever had before, straining to illuminate the scene of gaiety below. And amidst them, like a pearl among diamonds, the moon hung fu
  13. A long time ago Connor ran away. He thought he was moving on, making a life, making a future for himself but, coming back made him realise that he had been running away because there was no life, not future at least not one without Daniel in it.
  14. ‘I think there is something you should see.’ He raised an eyebrow but followed as she led him through the corridors to the main office. She strode straight through into her private sanctum beyond. Sitting at her desk she gave him a cool, thoughtful look then took out her keyring and unlocked the top drawer of her desk. She rifled through it for a moment and brought out a CD. “This is one of the most highly confidential pieces of information we hold here. No one else has seen it but
  15. How many ways are there for a human being to die? Chris has been given a crash course in them all. That's why he's not quite himself any more. But, will the new guy learn to understand him or will it all end in tears.
  16. “I thought I’d find you here.” Eden looked up and smiled at the girl who walked softly across the floor in the almost reverential way that almost everyone adopted in that room. Eden had spent too much time there to feel that any more. “Where else?” he said returning her smile. Then he turned away to gently stroke the hair and cheek of the boy who lay sleeping in the bed. “It’s his birthday. He’s twenty one today.” “Twenty one?” the girl exclaimed. “Has it really been three years?”
  17. Eden had faith, complete faith but will he finally realise that faith is not enough to bring about a miracle? Sometimes miracles need a little help

    Epilogue - The End

I sing while I cook... well cooking is, I suppose, the wrong word. I stick some nachos with grated cheese under the grill, fill some taco trays with salad and home made salsa and put it all on a tray with a bag of sea salt kettle chips, a couple of store bought dips and two cans of diet coke. For good measure I throw in a tub of tutti frutti ice cream and two spoons. Struggling with the tray I stagger through the door and then almost drop it. The room is empty. Like a complete moron I st
  19. Silver has been very quiet all the way home. I am slightly worried about that but I have kept silent, giving him his time. Eventually he falls asleep and I can indulge myself by openly observing him... only when stuck in traffic of course. He looks absolutely worn out, his face almost grey with fatigue, emotion and cold. Not that he’s cold now, at least not on the outside. I am hopeful that the trip has thawed the ice around his heart, but how can I be sure? Only time will tell and
  20. “I can’t put this on the grave. It will be ruined in the first dew.” “I know. I have another surprise.” I wheel him over to the church to be met in the porch by the vicar. He smiles at Silver. “I have heard a lot about you. I owe you a debt... a huge debt...” To the enormous surprise of both of us there are tears in his eyes. “Did you know him? Did you know David?” “You could say that.” He takes a deep breath and lets it out in a long sigh. “He was my brother.
  21. Over the next week and a half Silver gets stronger and stronger. After the first few days the district nurse stopped coming because his wounds are healing so well the dressings have come off to let them get some air. The first time he was able to shower was quite emotional. He revelled in the feel of the water and got excited about being able to wash his hair properly. When he came out he smelled so good I almost jumped on him then and there, and I would have if he was interested... but
  22. By the time I open my eyes I am in a hospital bed. It takes a minute for me to figure out why. “Hey there. How you doing?” I turn my head towards the sound of the voice and immediately regret it as those fireworks start exploding again. “Aw.” Sam grins at me. “Easy tiger.” He looks strangely out of place against the faded floral of the curtain that separates us from the rest of the world. “Fuck. What happened?” “Do you remember anything?” “Of course I do.
  23. “Stand up, very slowly, and get over here where I can see you.” With shaking legs I comply and, dodging the furniture, draw step by step closer to the now intimidating figure looming over my sleeping Silver. “Sit down.” I half collapse into the chair, staring up with wide eyes, fear making my heart pound in my chest. I am glad that, at least for now, Silver is oblivious. At least now that I am here he is not going to wake alone facing this monster. The thought twists my stomach even
  24. The first thing I do when I leave the room is tell Aeron what’s going on. He reassures me that he will get on to his headquarters immediately and when I came back to collect Silver he will be able to tell me what arrangements have been made for our security after we leave the hospital. My next port of call is to the hotel where Mr & Mrs Hart are staying. Although they are delighted their overwhelming emotion is as mine was, fear. We all know that Silver has been hiding a lot of the
  25. The hospital bed is quite narrow so Silver and I have to lie close to each other. We are facing each other, close but not touching. I can feel his breath on my face and see the flecks of blue in his eyes. “I have never seen anyone so beautiful in all my life.” “Neither have I.” “You can’t be talking about me so you must be really conceited right now.” “One... acknowledging the fact of my physical perfection is not a conceit it is an indication of a healthy self image.
