Quirky Poesy - 5. Shimmering Reflections

In the story '18 Weeks,' the falling-apart protagonist, David, tormented by suppressed memories of sexual abuse and suppressed desire for Twoey, stands at his window before the breathtaking view of an ice storm. His girlfriend holds him while he wishes it were Twoey. He is on the verge of ending his denial and composes this little doggerel.

I decided to include it here because there is so little poetry in Skinnyland. Also, not everyone reads '18 Weeks.'

in the glittery glare of the ice coated tree

did my soul now despair

for the ken of my love, be it she be it he

was now mine to declare

Wow. Thanks for the intro to this. I was able to understand it. The starkness of the ice-coated tree set a tone for the man who was where he didn't want to be. His fate is in his hands, and I felt that realization. Very powerful four lines. I hope the decisiveness I felt is followed through. Well done, skinny... cheers... Gary...

Thank you for reading and commenting Gary!

David takes a loooong time to follow through :)

"Glittery glare" - opposites, but with a common cause. Very much the situation that our David is waking up to find himself in now. I know how I'm hoping his declaration goes!

and what do you mean, not *everybody* reads "18 Weeks"??!! I want names! *looks up Uncle John's number*.

Thanks for reading jess!

Yeah, unfortunately there are over 20,000 GA members who haven't discovered '18 Weeks' :)

Some wise person once said "Every young man writes some poetry in his life," and I think this is your character David's reaching the point where only verse will do. Many poems, and many poets, are first born out of exactly this frustration to find form for their boundless feelings, and I think you did well to portray it here in your story : )

Thanks for reading, AC!

And you're correct. Our young poet-to-be is very frustrated.

Some time realization is enough than doing it. I can feel emotionless moment colloid with emotional blow. Loved it. Beautifully written... :)

And I agree with Aunt Def, there should be more poetry in Skinnyland.

Thank you Emi!

Yes, our young hero, David, is on a torturous journey of self-discovery. This was a very emotional moment in his journey.
