Quirky Poesy - 7. Acceptance

In the story '18 Weeks of Twoey,' the protagonist, David, who was mentioned in the last two poems, has arrived at the final chapter. He has Twoey; Twoey has him. They speak of ‘forever’ but each knows there is a lot of work ahead. David is damaged but, by finally accepting who he is – over the objections of his mind, still trying to protect him from memories of his childhood sexual abuse – he has become serene and filled with hope. He realizes this acceptance will be the key to his survival.

And so he has composed his final poem for us, a cinquain.

 

 

 

 

acceptance

beatific, blissful

lightening, encouraging, blessing

climate of comfortable calmness

contentment

I think there is a clever phonetic play on the words 'acceptance' and 'contentment.' I'm not sure I know how professors of metre and declamation would term it, but for me it's like a musical note. The 'tance' part of acceptance is like a note going sharp, and the 'ment' of contentment is like the exact same note going flat. It's a profoundly complete and satisfying sound to end the poem on.

You know, when I wrote 'contentment' I knew its sound felt like what the word meant. I don't think I'd ever noticed that before. So I'm glad I chose it to end the poem because it made me--full of contentment!
