A Man in a Room, and other poems - 9. unread

Poem No. 19

Such a pleasant night –

a night for stars

that dance in endless pleasure –

and let you feel their delight

Poem No. 20

A dream of sullen stillness born

from silent repose of faceless specters

truth of hunger, moth of desire

lie in the darkened TV sets of the subconscious –

How I used to dread my own sleep.

Poem No. 21

Instead she said

a soft whisper

her voice denied

what her heart wanted to sing

her lips trembled

as she tried to

remember why she'd lied

her eyes opened and heaved a sigh

a nightmare she felt embarrassed

that sleep could control her life

her sighing eyes began to cry

as she simply wondered why.

'Truth of hunger, moth of desire...lie in the darkened TV sets...' These lines are going to murmur themselves in my mind's ear like the endless chant of the sea. They are so memorable. Your delight of the stars is a real gem, and is already a favorite.

Thanks for the great review, Parker. The moth poem was pretty much a surprise when I ran into it recently and typed it up. I have no memory of it, but it seems pretty remarkable I'd write that. Most of these quick poems were written as part of a poem-a-day challenge I'd set myself. I recall feeling disappointed in the overall efforts, but with the poems shown in this chapter, I can see I was staking out new territory at the time for me to explore later on. Seems the little exercise became more valuable to me that I ever acknowledged.

Thanks again.

19 … Mmmm this is sexy in some ways. Makes me think of a warm sultry night, clear with billions of bright points of light above us. We’re outside dancing slow and I look up and the stars are too.. Wonderful poem, AC!

20 … This one is on the edge of a nightmare. It’s scary and I feel like I’m waiting for the horror show to start. One i have no choice but to sit through.

21 … I don’t know … this one makes me sad, like she’s hiding from herself, her truth. And well sleep can control your life, if it’s bad, if your dreams are only nightmares.

All three of these are wonderful. I wonder why you wrote them, what you were doing or going through then?

Thank you, Tim. This is a very generous review and I appreciate it!

Growing up in rural Southern Illinois, the sky played a big part in my life. That included the nighttime sky, and I have several discrete memories of walking out of doors and having the beauty waylay me. Well, I am a poet after all… :)

Your interpretation of No. 20 may be a good one. The poem struck me when I came to type it up recently.

As for what's going on in No. 21, and much of my poetry at this period, I was struggling with coming out. At the time I was still confirmed in my idiotic belief that I would live and die alone loveless and hollow.

Thanks for your support; it means the world to me.
