A Different Road - 11. Chapter 11

When will this damn roller coaster stop and let me off? It’s been another day of ups and downs. I had just had tremendous sex with Adrian, and then I had to sit several hours later and watch my best friend self-destruct. I was still struggling with an unanswerable question- if Brett was in love with Cindy, then why was he so bothered by me being with Adrian?

It seems that he was really affected by seeing me and Adrian kissing in the boys’ room. He had been kissing Cindy behind my back for the past few months, but I couldn’t do the same thing? Sure, it was with a guy, but he knew I was gay. And besides, he never kissed me; except that one time for only a few minutes.

I had no idea why his mother had been so angry with me. Brett was her son. If he was having problems, then it was her duty to help him, not mine. She knew we weren’t talking anymore. I guess she just assumed she could come waltzing into my bedroom and patch things up with a few words.

She wasn’t in the room when Brett told me he didn’t want me anymore. She wasn’t there when I fell in love with him and gave him my body willingly for five years. She couldn’t feel the pain in my heart when I thought I couldn’t live without him. She wasn’t there when I stood on that cliff and opened my arms because I felt I couldn’t go on anymore.

“You all right?” Adrian asked, bringing me out of my deep thoughts.

“Yeah,” I replied. I had almost forgotten he was in the car with me. He took my hand and squeezed it.

I pulled up in front of his house and turned out the lights. The house was dark inside except for the porch lights. I looked at my watch; it was after midnight.

“You won’t get in trouble will you?” I asked worriedly. I knew his father would not approve of him being out so late.

“They’re in bed,” he responded nervously. “I hope they won’t know what time I came in.”

“Will I see you tomorrow?” I asked hopefully. I wanted us to spend the day together.

“I’ll call you in the morning,” he responded. He then leaned toward me, and we kissed goodnight. It wasn’t a long kiss, but it would get me by until I saw him again.

“Night, Corey.” He looked into my eyes. It was as if he was searching for something. I knew he wanted to tell me he loved me, but I think he was waiting for me to say it first. I didn’t think it would be fair to say it, when I wasn’t sure if my heart yet believed it.

“Night Adrian.” His smile faded as he got out of the car. He turned and waved goodbye from the porch. I waited until he was safely inside before I pulled off.

I drove home, but I still wasn’t tired. I walked around to the backyard and sat on the edge of the pool. I took off my shoes and socks, rolled up my pants legs and kicked gently at the water. It was relaxing to hear the water hitting the side of the pool.

After a few minutes, the patio door opened and my father pattered over to the side of the pool in just his boxers. He sat down beside me.

“It’s a nice night out,” he remarked softly.

“Yeah, it is,” I replied.

We sat quietly for several minutes. I knew he was waiting for me to say something.

“How can you tell if you’re really in love?” I asked. He started laughing.

“Wow,” he responded. “You go straight to the top.” I looked over as he chuckled.

“No, seriously,” I said.

“I can’t answer that for you, Corey,” he said thoughtfully. “Only your heart can do that.”

“But I thought I loved Brett.” I looked over for an answer. “Now Adrian comes into my life, and I think I’m falling for him. I’m really confused. I don’t know what to do.”

He scooted over to me and wrapped his arm around me.

“What does your heart tell you?” he asked.

“That’s just it,” I sighed. “I love both of them. Now I feel I have to choose, and I know I’m going to hurt one of them.”

“I think you’ve already made a decision.” He looked into my eyes. “You just don’t how to tell Brett.”

“How did you get so wise?” I asked.

“Good gene pool,” he laughed. “Just hope you inherited it.” With that, he pushed me into the water. I jumped up and grabbed his leg, pulling him in. We laughed and played around in the pool for a long time. We eventually ended up skinny dipping. It seemed weird at first, swimming naked with my father; but we were really having a good time. He had a remarkable build and a huge cock. I thought my mother was crazy for walking away from a man that any other woman would love to have.

We walked naked into the kitchen, and my father tossed me a beer from the refrigerator. We sat at the counter talking about that night’s football game. He got extremely upset when I told him how Brett’s mom had treated me.

When I finally went to bed, it was around 2:00. I was exhausted. I fell into bed and went immediately to sleep. Instead of dreaming about Brett, I dreamt of Adrian.

“Where are we?” I looked around, and it appeared like we were deep into a forest. I could barely see light coming through the canopy of the tree tops.

“I’m not sure,” replied Adrian. “Aren’t you scared?”

“No.” I took his hand. “I’m with you.” He looked over and smiled.

“Look.” We stopped suddenly and looked at the fork in the road. There were two paths heading in opposite directions. One was heading east, and the other west.

On the path that headed east, I could barely make out a figure standing in the shadows. He had his head down, and he looked forlorn. There was a river forming from the tears falling from his face. He slowly raised his head, and I could tell it was Brett. I stood looking at the sad figure until Adrian grabbed my hand.

“You ready?” he asked. I took one last look at the sad figure and nodded my head.

“Then let’s go.” Adrian gripped my hand, and we headed down the path heading west. As we walked, the sun began to shine through the trees.

I was awakened by the phone ringing in the kitchen. I looked at the clock. It was 4:35. Who could be calling at this time in the morning? It stopped, and then began ringing again several minutes later. I heard my father answer it from his bedroom. Several minutes later, he knocked on my door and opened it.

“Get up, Corey,” he ordered. “We have to go.”

“What’s wrong?” I sat up and saw the worried look on his face.

“We have to go to the hospital,” he replied. “Adrian’s been hurt.”

I fell onto the bed and wrapped myself in the covers. I was trying hard not to scream. It was the second time in a few days that he had been taken to the hospital. My father came over, wrapped his arms around me and tried to calm me down.

“The phone call was from Cornelius,” he said. “Reverend Baker beat Adrian last night after you took him home.” I began to tremble uncontrollably. Why did such bad things have to happen to good people? Adrian never hurt anyone.

“Is he alright?” I was afraid to hear the answer.

“I don’t know,” my father told me. “He had just gotten off the phone with Adrian’s mother. It seems that Reverend Baker was arrested and taken to jail.”

“Good,” I spat. “I hope he rots there.” I got up and began dressing. I had to get to Adrian. I knew he needed me, and I had to be strong for him.

My father drove me to the hospital. He thought I was too emotional to be driving. He was probably right. When we got to the emergency room, Cornelius, John, Charlie, Julie and Adrian’s mother were sitting in the waiting area. Charlie jumped up and came running to me. She threw herself on me and began weeping.

“God, Corey,” she cried. “I’m so glad you’re here.”

“Is Adrian alright?” I asked impatiently.

“We don’t know anything yet,” she continued crying. “From what my aunt said, he was hurt pretty bad.” Adrian’s mother was sitting off by herself in a corner. It was apparent that no one wanted to talk to her.

We walked back over to where everyone else was. They rose and hugged me and my father. I sat down beside Charlie and Julie. Julie grabbed Charlie’s hand and squeezed it tightly. I took her other hand and held it.

We sat for about twenty minutes before a young woman wearing a doctor’s jacket came out and asked for the Baker family. We rose and walked over to her. She explained that Adrian had suffered a severe concussion when his father had hit him with a fireplace poker. I thought I was going to get sick. My legs weakened, and my father reached out, grabbed me and held me up.

Adrian’s mother was crying softly as the doctor continued to explain that he would be all right. He might suffer from severe headaches for a while; but other than that, he had been lucky that the damage hadn’t been worse. It seems that his father only hit him once because the first blow knocked him out. Fortunately, he had not continued hitting him.

We learned later that Adrian’s mother had called the police and insisted that they arrest her husband. She had traveled in the ambulance and held her son’s hand on the way to the hospital.

It began when Reverend Baker looked out the window when I dropped Adrian off at home. He apparently had seen us kissing in the car. When Adrian entered the house, he confronted him and called him a queer. He then went into a tirade about the sins of homosexuality. He grabbed a fireplace poker and swung it at Adrian. Adrian was unable to get out of the way in time and took a blow to the side of the head. He fell to the floor motionless. Mrs. Baker entered the room and rushed to his side. She then called 911. She had also asked for the police to come as well. After explaining the situation to police, Reverend Baker was placed under arrest and taken to jail.

She asked the doctor, “May I see my son?”

“Of course,” the doctor replied. “But only two of you may see him now, and only for a minute. He needs his rest.”

Adrian’s mother walked over and grabbed my hand. “Come with me.” She continued to hold my hand as we followed the doctor to the examining room. When she pulled back the curtain, Adrian was lying with his eyes closed. The side of his face was bandaged. He had IV’s running into his arm and an oxygen tube in his nose. Mrs. Baker almost collapsed when she saw him. I grabbed her and held her upright as she trembled.

We walked slowly over to the side of the bed. Mrs. Baker grabbed Adrian’s hand, and he slowly opened his eyes. Tears began to run down his cheeks when he saw his mother.

“I’m sorry, Mother,” he cried softly. She leaned over and kissed him on his forehead.

“Shhh,” she said. “It’s going to be all right.” She put her hand on his forehead. She looked over at me and motioned for me to come over.

“Look who’s here,” she informed Adrian. He looked over at me and started crying again.

“Corey,” he cried. His mother replaced her hand with mine and then stepped back. I squeezed it tightly as I leaned in and gave him a kiss.

“I love you, Adrian,” I whispered in his ear.

“I know.” He gave me a slight grin. “I love you too.”

He closed his eyes and returned to sleep. I gave him another kiss, and then we walked out and back to the waiting room. Everyone stood, waiting anxiously for us.

They gathered around Mrs. Baker and me as we explained to them Adrian’s condition. We assured them that he would be all right. When we were through, Mrs. Baker started to walk away and sit by herself. I grabbed her hand and asked her to join me on the couch. She refused, but I insisted. She smiled warmly as she took the seat beside me.

Charlie sat down beside me, and Julie sat on the arm, holding Charlie’s hand. After several awkward moments, they began to talk. Adrian’s mother apologized to Charlie for neglecting her niece. She explained how her husband had insisted that she not talk to her. She knew she should not have listened to him, but she confessed that she had been afraid of his violent temper.

I got up and sat beside my father while Charlie and her aunt made up for lost time. She even seemed to be comfortable with Julie holding Charlie’s hand.

I fell asleep on my father’s shoulder. I must have slept for about an hour. I woke up when Charlie came over and plopped down in my lap. She opened my eyelids with her fingers, and I gazed into her grinning face.

“Hey handsome,” she said. “We’re going to go get something to eat.”

“I’d like to stay here,” I said. “Just bring me back something.” She frowned, got off my lap and walked over to Julie. I was left alone in the waiting room.

I kept looking at the door going into the emergency area. I cautiously walked over and acted like I was going to get a drink from the water fountain. No one seemed to be paying any attention. I quickly opened the door and hurried to the room where Adrian was.

When I entered, he was still quietly sleeping. I pulled up the chair beside his bed, took his hand and held it while he slept. Occasionally, he would squeeze it gently as if he knew it was me. I just sat and watched his beautiful face. Once, he opened his eyes and looked at me. He squeezed my hand tightly and smiled before drifting back off to sleep.

An elderly nurse came in several times to check his vitals. She didn’t seem upset that I was holding Adrian’s hand. On her third visit, she told me that her grandson was gay. She hoped that if he were ever injured, his boyfriend would be allowed to hold his hand. Tears formed in our eyes as she walked over and gave me a kiss on the forehead.

Adrian was admitted to the hospital and placed in a private room so they could monitor him and make sure that there was no permanent brain damage. Since it was a Sunday, I didn’t have to worry about going to school. I was able to spend the day with him.

His mother also never left his side. Charlie, Julie, Cornelius and John came to visit, but they didn’t stay long. It gave me a good time to get to know Adrian’s mother.

Like most proud mothers, she told me funny stories about Adrian growing up. He would tell her to be quiet, but it only made the stories funnier. She then explained how his father had started to suspect that Adrian was gay after he took her sleeping pills.

She felt guilty that she didn’t intervene, but she again explained how she was afraid of her husband. He had a violent temper. She thought it was best to go along with him, rather than upset him and perhaps trigger his anger.

She told us that she knew that he had been having several extramarital affairs. He even bragged to her about his other children. She threatened to divorce him several times, but he told her he would kill her if she tried.

She was going the next day to see an attorney and file for divorce. She was also going to have a restraining order taken out against him so he couldn’t go anywhere near her or Adrian. Adrian was to be released that morning, and she asked if I would be able to stay with him while she kept her appointments. I readily agreed.

His mother brought Adrian home from the hospital around 9:00. I was to come over around 10:00. She greeted me warmly at the door when I arrived. She pulled me into a hug and whispered, “Thank you.”

“I’ve never seen him so happy,” she said tearfully. “I didn’t think I’d ever see him smile again.”

She led me into the living room, and we talked for a few minutes. She explained to me the trouble that had existed between Adrian and his father. She had felt so helpless for the past few years knowing that Adrian was sinking deeper and deeper into depression. We both wiped away tears when she told me how she thought that I had saved his life. He seemed to have come alive after meeting me. I was unaware of any of this.

“He’s in his room.” She pointed down a hallway as she put on a light jacket and started to leave. “I won’t be home for several hours.” She gave me a quick kiss on the cheek before leaving.

I walked down the hall and peeked into Adrian’s bedroom. He was lying asleep on the bed in just his boxers. I stood at the door and looked down at him for a few minutes. I didn’t want to disturb his peaceful sleep.

I went across the hall to the bathroom and took off my clothes. I then crept back to his room and carefully climbed in beside him. He stirred, and then his eyes widened as he realized I was naked beside him. He reached out and rubbed my chest as my cock began to harden. He looked down and watched it expand.

“I like being woke like this,” he remarked as he kissed me softly.

“Mmmm,” I purred. I reached down and pulled his hard cock out through the opening in his shorts and started to stroke him.

“You feel all right?” I asked worriedly.

“I do now.” He started to giggle, looking down at my hand slowing stroking him. He raised and pulled off his shorts and lay before me naked.

I carefully crawled on top of him. I leaned in and gave him a passionate kiss.

“I love you, Adrian.” I began to kiss him again before he could respond. He was squirming under me, and I could feel his hard cock between my legs rubbing gently at my ass.

“Oh God, Corey,” he moaned. “I never thought it would be like this.”

“Just a minute,” I said. “I’m going to make it even better.” I got off the bed and hurried across the hall into the bathroom. I dug into my wallet for a condom I had been saving. Brett and I never used one, but I felt that I should protect Adrian because I didn't know who Brett had been sexually involved with recently.

“What are you going to do?” he asked as I tore open the wrapper and began rolling it onto his hard cock. He threw back his head and moaned.

“I want you to make love to me,” I replied. He leaned forward and started kissing me passionately. I slowly sat back, lined his cock to the opening of my ass and pushed down. I could feel him slowly entering me.

“I love you, Corey,” he moaned lustfully as he penetrated me deeper. He again started kissing me. Brett had fucked me hundreds of times, but I don’t think I had ever felt the love that I was now experiencing. At that moment, I knew the difference between having sex and making love. With Adrian I was making love.

When he had completely entered me, I sat up and began to move up and down on his cock. We were staring into each other’s eyes. I wanted to see the happiness that they contained for me. A tear began to fall from his eye, and I leaned in and licked it away. He looked up at me and smiled.

We didn’t say anything. We just stared at one another as we continued to make love. He reached down and took my hard cock in his hand and began to slowly stroke me. He was enjoying watching my face and the immense pleasure he was giving me.

I felt myself ready to cum. I had been trying to hold back, but I could no longer. With a loud moan, I sat down on his cock and erupted onto this chest. He closed his eyes as he began to cum.

“Oh God, Corey!” he yelled as he erupted deeply inside me. “I love you.” He continued to fuck me until his cock began to soften. I rose, and he pulled his cock out. I immediately missed him being inside me.

I fell on top of him as he grabbed the side of my face and kissed me again.

“I love you, Corey Singer.” He smiled into my eyes.

“I love you, Adrian Baker.” We kissed again.

After cleaning up, drifted off to sleep for a while. I awoke later and realized it was time to give Adrian his medication. Afterwards, I helped him take a bath. Of course, it turned into a double bath, because I joined him. He had me stand while he sucked my cock. I pulled out and came on his chest. I then applied a large amount of shampoo in my hand and jacked him off while we kissed. He moaned in my mouth when he came again.

We were cuddled on the couch when his mother returned home around 3:00. She smiled when she walked in and saw us sitting with our arms around each other. She walked over and kissed us both on the foreheads.

She told us about her meeting with the divorce attorney and the court appearance for a restraining order. Adrian’s father had been released that morning, but no one had seen him. I shuddered thinking that he could have come in the house when Adrian and I were making love.

Suddenly, I looked at the clock and noticed the time. It was 3:45. Football practice was at four o’clock sharp. I explained to Adrian that I had to go. He understood that I had promised the coach that I would return to practice.

I kissed him again before heading to the door. I began to feel anxious when I realized I would have to face Brett at practice.

I wonder which Baby Mama he went to when he was released from jail. Such a vile person! Way too many religious hypocrites being worshipped by their followers! So many examples of right wing fundamentalists getting caught doing exactly what they had condemned from the pulpit.

And they wonder why we get so upset when they try to enshrine their religious beliefs and superstitions into law!

Those same fundamentalists want to keep women unempowered so they can dominate them. They are afraid of independent women who can think for themselves because they know that their women are smarter than they are! Strong independent women are the solution to conservative fear and hate.

One of the things I noticed in this chapter was the opening paragraph where Corey referred to Brett as his best friend. It wasn't that long ago that Brett was his ex-best-friend. That small detail shows that Corey is well along the path to recovery, and I think it's obvious that Adrian has played a major part in that healing process. Corey still needs to repair his relationship with Brett, but I don't think Brett will fight him :D

Another fine detail point is the fact that Adrian's father only hit him once. Mrs. Baker has mentioned her husband's temper and how violent he can get, so the fact that he only hit Adrian once is telling. If he was full of rage, I would have expected it to be more than one hit, so I suspect that after that one hit the 'good' Reverend probably realised what he'd just done. A poker is generally a pretty hefty piece of iron, so he would almost certainly have known how much damage he'd done. The fact that Mrs. Baker didn't mention anything about his resisting the police also tends to make me think that he went into shock after he hit Adrian. That's very realistic. He'll probably end up rationalising his actions and blaming Adrian (or maybe Cornelius), but from what was said and not said, I think the attack on Adrian was a huge shock to Adrian's father.

As for Adrian and Corey...

Not only do we need strong independent women, we need strong independent-minded men who support them.

Corey finally decided to "walk down another path" with Adrian.  His father had been so wise to tell him that ".. you've already made a decision ... you just don't know how to tell Brett"

Matters of the heart are seldom simple and straight forward, the choices we make may yet come back to haunt us.

@Graeme I think you're giving more credit than it is due to the Reverend Baker, in terms of whether he had any common decency in his bones, but then you may be right, we should always hope that there's a spark of humanity left inside of the "monsters" in our midst.
