My Shorts - 2018 - 3. Dragon II
Honsol sat in the common room of the Sterling Buck and waited for his friend to join him. Since the curse came upon him, he hated to wait, but he understood the need for the mortal races to have their time. He looked around the room, gazing at the few locals that came here for a “watering-hole,” and took in the décor itself.
The Innkeeper for the Sterling Buck wanted this to be a somewhat classier establishment, for a backwater forest town. He must have been an adventurer in his own right, as he looked around. Shelves of books lined one wall, unlocked and unguarded for patrons to read if they could. Gilded paintings and tapestries hung on the walls, along with animal trophies and old armor and weapons. He was a little surprised to see a dragon scale shield hanging next to a light mace, which radiated magic to his senses. It was an impressive building.
He sipped on the wine, he ordered and waited. He looked up when he smelt the scent of Strider Cat on the air and spotted his friend and companion walking into the common room from the stairway. He waved his hand at him, getting his attention, and smiled at their approach.
“I see you’re still traveling with him, Sasha. I hope his disposition, has improved,” Honsol said directly to the cat.
Sasha the Strider Cat, moved over to him and was rewarded with the behind the ear scratch before she plopped down under the table beneath the two powerful figures.
“Now what is this about, Honsol? You’re sending didn’t give much detail, and I wasn’t expecting you for another forty-eight hour,” the Half-Elf said, looking at his friend.
“I see that your disposition hasn’t improved, Rune. You need a husband,” Honsol said jokingly. He shook his head, sipped his wine, and looked at the man. “Down to business, then.”
Rune nodded to him, and couldn’t help to have a smile come upon his face. He’d been friends with Honsol for a long time, and one of the few who knew what he really was. “Please… But, I’ve been on the road for days, to get here. I’m sleeping in that bed tonight before we go anywhere.”
“That is perfectly acceptable. I need a night to rest as well, and already got a room too.”
The admission took Rune back, and he looked at his friend in concern. “What happened?”
“Desterion Wizards invaded my home. They’ve been dealt with, but…,” Honsol paused and looked down at himself. “There’s been some changes, that I’ll discuss when we’re more private.”
“That’s fine. I take it we’re going to Desterion then?”
“That is part of the trail, but I do not know where the final destination is. Hell, I wish Gregory were here.”
Rune stiffened at the mention of his half-brother name and looked at Honsol. “It must be bad if you want his help.”
“It is…”
“Well then. We head out after breakfast in the morning then?”
“That’s the plan.”
Rune and Honsol went on to talk about other subjects. Wine flowed freely, with the two getting a good buzz, and going through four bottles of the good stuff before they retired to their rooms. Rune was more than a little worried, seeing his friend drunk for the first time, in their long history, and sent Sasha to stand guard over the Silver Dragon turned Human.
