Here Kitty, Kitty - 14. Chapter 7.1

The group spent the next week settling into a routine and trying to make plans within plans. Their first aim was to see if they could find more survivors from Kitryn’s family and friends. Simon was sure that if Kitryn had escaped then others may have done too.

Simon was surprised how easily he learned to control his feeding. He alternated feeding from Kitryn and Meg. They always made sure the kits weren’t in the room, but they didn’t hide what was happening either. The kits had already been taught the basics about the different species of paranormal, but Kitryn said any way of furthering their education should never be ignored.

They had moved into their second week when their calm home was interrupted.

Meg frowned. “Who would be out at this time of night?” Then she grinned at Simon and Kitryn. “Except a family of ragged survivors that is.”

Simon chuckled while Kitryn rolled his eyes.

“David,” came Meg’s joyful yell. “Is it supply day already?”

Simon heard the rumble of a male voice but didn’t try and use his super hearing. He had learned Meg didn’t like what she called eavesdropping.

Footsteps made Simon look up and Meg reappeared followed by a bear of a man with a shock of red hair and matching bushy beard.

“Simon, Kitryn, this is David. He runs the supply store in the nearest town and makes supply runs to those of us old folk who can’t get to him ourselves. David, these are friends of mine who stopped by with their kids.”

David nodded to them as he put the boxes he held down on the kitchen counter. “Nice to meet ‘cha.” He pulled a sheet of printed paper out of the top box. “Here’s yer invoice. I’ll pick up the money next month.”

Within minutes he’d nodded a goodbye and headed out the door.

“Man of few words,” Simon observed when Meg returned from locking up again.

“Yep, that’s David. But he’s a sweetheart. There are four of us scattered in this mountain who can’t get to town. He uses a snowmobile and some sort of trailer to make a run out here every month.”

“Does his personality match his hair?” Kitryn asked with a laugh.

Meg rolled her eyes and started to unpack the groceries. Tins went in the pantry, meat was cut into portions and stored in the fridge and deep freeze. Simon watched in fascination as Meg worked with quick concise movements. In short order, everything was in its place and Meg joined them at the table.

“So what have we decided so far?”

Kitryn sighed. “I’m going to start scouting from tomorrow. My cat should be able to scent if anyone has been around recently. I don’t want to take any chances of us being sneaked up on unawares. I still think we should leave the kits here and Simon and I could head further out to see what we can find.”

“No!” came the indignant voice of Fran from the doorway. She marched over to Kitryn and slapped him on the arm. “You said we always together now. That we family. You no leave us.”

Simon laughed. “She has you there, Kitty. I think you need a new plan.”

Simon smiled as Kitryn pulled Fran into his lap. He watched as the boys ran in to claim a lap as well, not wanting to be left out.

He could get used to this family stuff.

Very sweet ending, Caz. It's nice they've had a good rest and Simon has worked out his feeding. I'm wondering what part David will play, if any. Cheers... see you next week... Gary....

It wouldn't be the first story where young ones became allies or a secret weapon of sorts. I think kids are sometimes overlooked as being "only children." The kits, especially Fran, may be part of a surprise or two that are coming. Thanks.

Fran is a mystery at the moment but hopefully Meg can help shed some light.

Fran is right. Staying together is the best policy. Smart little one.

Of course, she's smart ;) She was the only girl for a while, someone had to keep all those boys in line. In all seriousness, she has had to be smart and has had to grow up far too quickly.
