Long Day

Long Day is one of my first stories and follows Jake Tull who suffers from aphasia - which manifests in his being restricted to, mostly, repeating recorded words like song lyric. An all time favorite of mine.

Jake Tull has aphasia due to a family tragedy. He barely talks, except to his dad. Then comes Greg and his friends. He talks to them in lyrics. They start to appreciate the amazingly talented person Jake is. Jake thinks he finds love. Yet love leaves him because of an event out of his control. Jake gets attacked by the school bully and still pines for his love. Will he get his love back?

It's a wonderfully crafted story. A bit indulgent at times, but aphasia is a literary conceit that works perfectly here. Was it Friedrich Nietzsche who said that poets couldn't talk like normal so they had to sputter out poetry? Jake is exactly that sensitive, lyrical kid that maps his universe in lyrics, because he knows no alternative. The story deals with friendships as well as young love. Sometimes one can move on. Sometimes one cannot. Some people come into our lives in the wrong moment. Some people come into our lives in a different capacity than their original intents. It's all good, as long as we are open and adult about this.
