The short story might be simplistic and without any serious conflict, but the characters were believable and the plot fairly realistic.  There were also areas where I would have liked to change the author's phrasing and slightly delayed his boss' good news to include a little conflict first, but other than that, this was a fairly good read.  It also had a happy ending, which was slightly contrived and could have been handled better, but all-in-all it wasn't a bad read.
