The curtains flutter
and the shadows shift
just long enough
for me to see—
nothing,
nothing more than a glimpse
of another shadow.
Is it a tease?
Do you flutter the curtains
only enough so that I see
that there are curtains there?
Do you tempt me with the hint of illusion
like a catnip mouse,
knowing my love of mysteries
and my need to solve them?
Or do you sit behind them
hiding from me,
hiding from yourself,
curtains safe as a shield in front of you
until your sighing breath
disturbs them?
