LGBT themed movie review "Velvet Goldmine"

Hmmm...for once the synopsis does not show the movies complete plot Velvet Goldmine was a critical flop in 1998, when it first came out, but I never heard of it until now. I now understand why reviewers were so harsh on this movie, but I am going to look at it from modern viewpoint and an eye as a film critic.   I use LGBT in this description, because it is not just about two gay guys, a lesbian couple, or something that is sexually monotoned. It has a lot of meaning for the entire sexual sp

Reviewing World War I

My next movie will be "Velvet Goldmine" after I finish this experimental review of something bigger than any movie.   With so much hype over World War I's anniversary (1914-1918), I thought, why not review World War? It's not a gay film, nor is it practical to talk about entire conflicts with many plots and diverse characters unless you are an academic or are trying to say something big. However, as a war that reshaped Europe, changed the course of history through its subsequent and concurring

Gay Themed Movie review "Maurice"

Ah Fuck!   I forgot how I felt about this kind of movie; Victorian and Edwardian era movies are my most detested historical and geographical framework. Some people like the idea of servants and masters (No not BDSM kind alas ), a rigid class based society (Movies like this make me want to drink to my grandfather and his strident Marxist-Socialist ideology), and a society so effete that it ignores its own hypocrisy (This is the British stereotype that has existed for nearly a century).   I l

Gay themed movie review, "Beautiful Thing"

I'll move across the pond for the next two reviews, since I got a request to review Maurice (haven't seen that movies in years, so I will need to go search for it) and Zombie, who rarely ever agrees with my actions , are both products of Great Britain. I will start this off with a familiar movie to almost every gay guy, "Beautiful thing" (1998). I didn't know about the play until a while later, but I have not seen it on stage sadly.   This is the grandfather movie of the gay film cliches; Its

Review of Gay Themed film "Shelter"

Alright this will be my last review, unless people really like reading my critiques.   The last movie I am reviewing is usually found in the top 10 lists of gay films that both heterosexual and gay audiences seem to enjoy. The American indie Film "Shelter" was made in 2007, but it holds an interesting quality about it; something nostalgic, but not dated. The best way to describe it is classy, which ironically is one of the themes of this movie that I have rarely ever scene touched upon in gay

Gay Themed Movie Review "From Beginning to End"

There's something so wrong about this movie...............And So wonderfully enchantingly RIGHT!   The 2009 Brazillian film "From Beginning to End" or (Do Começo ao Fim) is an interesting movie with great societal lessons and character study, but I have to say that last third nearly killed the film for me. Although, genuinely a good film, it had groundbreaking greatness in it, if only they would break from conventional film making.   So let's start at the beginning, two half-brothers grow up

Review of Gay Themed Movie "Judas Kiss"

Alright, I will make this a brief review, because going into this movie, I thought I would be in love with it. It has all the elements of a movie that I should love: cute boys, steamy love triangles, science fiction plot devices (basically Back to the Future meets DK's "Do Over" without the interesting plot points), and an ex porn star.   I am not saying this was a bad film, it is an enjoyable romp about a guy meeting his past self and trying to make changes to his life for the better. However

Review of Gay Themed Movie "Were the World Mine"

If I keep watching more gay movies, I might just end up making my own blog for reviewing these, but as for now, I will just write a review whenever I feel like it:   "Were the World Mine" was a movie made in 2008, so it is quite recent, but I did not hear about it until I began looking into a list of recommended gay themed movies.   First off let me get this off my chest, I hate Shakespeare adaptations in modern times, especially after watching the wreck that is "Private Romeo" (a gay themed

Officially as of 1:47 PM today, I am a homeowner

My blogs are pictures of my life at a certain point in time, so on my birthday on all the possible days for this to happen, I close on my house.   I can bore you with the process that had occurred through the last 2 months, but I won't. Suffice to say, I believe the Municipal government of Boston is incredibly corrupt and is getting kickbacks from contractors in order to enforce ordinances that seem on paper to be easy to follow, but in practice, require an accuracy that can only be done by m

Writing an interesting character, real ancient royalty

As I am getting older and wiser as a human being and a writer, I am recognizing a lot of fictional tropes that people fall into when writing characters. In order to create picture perfect fiction, writers fall into stereotypes like the fairy tale storyline of medieval and ancient kingdoms.   For example, the princess stereotype is not merely a Disney concoction, but a revisionist historical view of females in actual history. Actual princesses did not stew around in their rooms looking pretty a

Exploring Gay Cinema beyond just porn :D

There's a lot out there to explore, a lot of undiscovered territories to write, direct, and view. I might be a simple viewer and listener to these interesting tales that ranges from the generic stereotypical story of "Booy meets Boy meets world" to some awesome explorations into human passions and limits in love and understanding.   As a writer, I love writing the human condition, not simply because it's the hottest thing out there or people will remember it a hundred years from now, but it

Some thoughts about California

Well, I'm back, but existentially, I find myself even more empty than before.   People say that they go to California to find themselves, but what if you find that your life is completely empty and lonely. Sure, I have some success, some money, and some stability that many other people in the world will kill for and many others would think is enough to be happy. What I found in California wasn't a route to happiness, but just an epiphany of how lonely life can be.   To be honest, I did go to

Will be on vacation in San Diego Thursday-Monday, 5/22-5/26

Thank God,   I needed some time off and I can't wait to be on the beach and enjoy the relaxation of a message and spa treatment. (Let's say this, I enjoy having a strong man's hands over my back, rubbing oil and ointments, but it is only partially sexual, I really need to get the tension out of my back... )   I will be there with my own little hotel suite, so it will just be a private vacation.   Anyone have any gay destinations I should visit in San Diego?

Expanding canvas for my Story Causality

Egyptian mythology and Japanese history are usually distinct, but I am breaking old formulas by combining into my master plan and story canvas.   Egyptian Civilization is as ancient as Chinese and Indian civilizations, plus we know from real history that they had dealings through trade over thousands of years.   As for Japanese history, western historians never really pick up on the fact that Japan is an island nation at the edge of Asia, so how do you imagine it hosting a strong Buddhist in

A boy came to mind...

As I was reading a most unremarkable story from CNN's front pages today, I thought about someone that I had long since forgotten.   He was an unspectacular boy, born of a middle class family with some questionable genealogy due to his mother. Overall, he was a good guy; did well in school, hung out with a few Asian cliques (he probably rubbed off some ideas from them), and just treated everyone with respect.   As he grew older, he got wilder ideas about life and society. He hated how rich pe

I'm Back again....Damn that was a rough couple weeks

Let's go through a recap of why I haven't been on lately:   My Grandmother fell in her elder housing unit, she had to be rushed to Tufts Medical Center in Boston. At 88 years old, she is growing more and more feeble and senile, tragically.   She was rushed first to the emergency room and inspected, we all thought it was just a fall, but then a deeper CT scan revealed a big problem. She had blood build up in her lung, a substantial amount that blocked air in her right lung specifically. They

Why Deny Life Saving Drugs to Children?

http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/10/health/cohen-josh/index.html?hpt=hp_c2   This is one of those really sad cases that on the surface, the evil company is holding drugs from dying kids to use, but on a deeper level, it is an issue with how our economic, social, and regulatory model is structured in a way that makes it a no-win scenario.   If this is a problem, I would also say Americans are not alone in the world:   Here's a recent article from the telegraph:   http://www.telegraph.co.uk/scie

New story Concepts and observation about seperate but equal

First, a new concept in my story is the ambiguous morality of need in human existence. One groups needs in order to exist may conflict with anothers group's needs. In modern fiction, we often read about good over evil, when it comes to needs. However, Eastern storytelling usually make the case that needs are essentially ambiguous where good and evil come from perspective.   Remember that as you read my chapter.   Now here is my thoughts to continue on kansas, since Arizona is starting the sa

Story update and my thoughts about Kansas' gay Jim Crow law

First, something readers want to hear, I am writing a new chapter for Causality right now. It will be a full chapter that ties into the multiple storylines that I had left off in hte last chapter.   Alex, the Taoist Technomage (basically true in my story, magic is science, now James savik will be throwing cats at me ), is heading into a meeting with the Shinto members from the prior chapter, who were hunting ghosts and seeking out something. Japanese Shinto and Chinese Taoist traditions are p

Some Winter Tips from a New Englander

Seriously, after reading about how bad the South has taken "Winter", I am quite surprised and shocked at how people don't get common sense concepts to us New Englanders.   So, I thought I would share some basic winter tips from New Englanders to GA members down south, so you guys don't become stuck:   1. Take your time and don't rush, when walking- I know Southerners might never heard of the dreaded "black Ice" that we have in Boston and New York, but Ice can be invisible to the eye and on s

Life and things: Watch out for Chinese New Years at the end of the month

Well, life is pleasant though a bit boring.   I am watching the NFL playoffs and enjoying my leisure time, but I have not forgotten about my story.   I can't wait to watch the Colts vs. Pats game tonight, it will be epic in the mud (we have a big rain storm in the northeast right now, the snow has melted into the ground and turned it into mud. If this gets as ugly and slippery as I thought, then I want to name this the Mud Bowl! Some Straight guys like seeing two girls mud wrestling and gett

Is this Pro-Science or Pro-Religion? Interesting TV Show Clip

So I was looking up the Twilight Zone and came upon this episode clip of the 1985 series. I never watched the 1980's series, because it came before I was born and the classics in the 1960's series to me are far better in terms of the Twilight Zone stories. However, I was drawn to this one, since it was based off a story from Arthur C. Clarke. Clarke was influenced by Eastern thought and the cycle of Creation/Destruction are prominent in this story.   I watched it and felt sort of conflicted by

What do I believe in?

I finished writing my Christmas story and while writing it, I expressed some stuff that has been festering in me for a while.   https://www.gayauthors.org/story/w-l/christmasthemedstoryalifesworth In terms of my faith, I really can't be considered a mainline Christian, because to me, I think Christianity as it is in today's religion is incredibly diluted and deluded.   I don't like how Christianity has taken the route of power by manipulating political figures and movements, creating strife
