Some thoughts about the Boston Marathon Bombing

As a Bostonian, I am extremely sad and angry. Sad at the three lives extinguished so far and over a hundred, whose lives will never be the same. Angry that some one could act like this and kill so indiscriminately.   It felt like 9/11 happened again, but it was much closer to home. I've walked these routes in years past, I've traveled down Newbury street like most twenty-somethings in my town looking to take in the newest restaurants and fashions. I remember eating lunch on the steps of the li

Did 90's Fantasy have more gay subtext than modern fantasy?

I was itching to re-watch some old fashioned campy 90's action shows, so only one name came to my mind, Xena   Yes, that show was definitely made to be utter cheese, but I really tried to pay attention to all the lesbian hints in the show that I missed as I was growing up. I watched it as a kid in the 90's, but never really thought of it with sexual overtones, just that Lucy Lawless kicked ass! Now, I realize how much subtle romantic and love interest there was between Xena and Gabriel, which

How does an inverted debt pyramid work?

From foreign policy to theology, I have been bouncing around in my blog. Now I want to get back to my own skills, Finance:   An inverted debt pyramid is a modern concept in finance, not fully realized in most circumstances beyond the text theories with examples only becoming common in the last few years.   Let me start off with some basic ideas:   A person has $50,000 that he wants to invest in an asset that is worth $200,000, so he borrows $150,000 to make up the difference from 1st bank.

Just finished reading Da Vinci Code before Easter

Yes, I freely admit it; I probably am a heretic   I like the story, but I think the book's plot was stronger than the story writing behind it. However, I also felt captivated by the story. The book if read with Angels and Demons serves not only as an interesting conspiracy story on the secrets of our past defining the present, but it also serves as a warning not to be used for our future.   The novels greatest appeal is the story of the well known historical/biblical figure, Mary Magdeline,

Supreme Court: Thoughts on gay marriage and DOMA

It looks like a split decision based on what I am reading and interpreting from the transcript.   1st. Based on what is in front of the Supreme Court, I don't know if I'd overturn Proposition 8. The argument are meaningful and very honestly argued, carry a very deep problem to the concept of laws and observations in the traditional constitutionalist's concept. Proposition 8 was decided by California voters through plurality against gay marriage without legally breaking up "Civil commitments" o

Is there going to be another Korean War?

Was looking at this for the last few days and thought I'd chime in on my blog. Kim jung un is reeling for a confrontation: testing nukes, tearing the armistice, and now threatening to cut diplomatic contact.   If war was to be fought against the North Korean military using their nuclear arms, should and can the US honor its 60 year old scenario of nuclear retaliation? What about the impact to the Pacific Rim?   Also what many don't see is the thousand pound elephant in the room, China, remai

For readers of "In the Cold"

Yes, it was real event. Yes, I am like that in real life.   I wanted to write reality and just show you guys a piece of my life and piece of who I am with a recent experience. As some of you know, my tenant is an ex-Catholic priest, who had been convicted of child abuse during the early 2000's. I discovered that fact more than a year ago and you can even find that detail in my old postings, if you find that too incredible to believe. He is a registered sex offender of the highest grade, but to

Can we work in a world with no speech?

Yes, I see the irony that I am asking the question inside a blog   It just seems weird that people can type and text out replies, but the art of conversation and discussion using words from verbal exchanges seem to be losing their hold. When a person asks for my help, they email, text, or google chat me (FYI, Google chat works like an old version of AIM ).   Speech seems more like a secondary language to modern tech integrated generations, since the concept of short text seems to have caug

Maybe Robocop wasn't that far fetched after all

Detroit is in the worst mess of decades with a falling population and property values, along with high unemployment. Crime is running rampant and the Police Department is being stretched thin.   http://www.freep.com/article/20130221/COL06/130221080/Tom-Walsh-Sure-Snyder-wants-grow-Detroit-can-t-say-how-   Doesn't this sound like the premise of Robocop's dystopian future? Well, it's no longer science fiction, it is a fact of life and reality.   No, a cyborg cop won't save Detroit, nor would

Review of Revenge "Sacrifice": Finally back to Vengeance!

Alright, I don't do enough reviews or writing nowadays with my busy schedule, but I will take some time to write this one about ABC's night time soap Revenge. Yes, I freely admit it, I am hooked on the story and the raw emotions of the characters.   Basically, we got several dead people, a symbolic catharsis, and a complex storyline centering on revenge coming.   I won't offer you too many spoilers, but Emily is definitely not going to be the same after this fiasco. Nor do I think will Jack,

Concepts of "The End"

Today we have a papal resignation, unprecedented in recent history for Catholicism.   Now North Korea has also tested a nuclear weapon according to the readings of seismic activity.   However, this is not 2012, when stuff like this would have had people selling their possessions and making peace with God. Were the Mayans wrong with their math? Probably not, but people still want to believe in an end to their existence.   Look, I do believe that the world and mankind will end one day; hope

Websites and Internet: Examples of Moral establishment

It just hit me like a ton of bricks, the internet itself is a moral standard.   Think of it this way, each website has their own code of conduct and terms/use provisions. In essence, it is almost like a a religion setting out their commandments and tenets. People follow the rules in fear of divine retribution through God/Gods or in this case Mod/Mods/Admins of websites and forum.   However, what if people start testing the limits of the rules? What if there is no divine retribution or plague

A story idea or too outlandish?

I just got an idea last night about a story set in Hollywood California about a special agency that works for the big studios.   Sounds simple and easy enough, but here's the twist, they aren't the standard movie star agents, deal breakers, or Entourage-like groups that make people smile. These people are there to dig dirty secrets of the stars or even create them.   They would be the one's behind the curtain, filming sex tapes, getting movie stars into compromising situations, arranging dru

A little local Massachusetts politics

Sometimes, I think Democrats overreact too quickly before they consider everyone else. Republicans fall into the same on a national level as well.   http://www.wbur.org/2013/02/02/democrats-3                 The humor was that Democrats were preparing for Scott Brown to run again for Senate, because he had the best chances of winning. Everything was set to take down the Republican front man, but Scott Brown hadn't even decided to enter the fight again.   I applaud Scott Brown for n

Strange things in life

I will leave this blog short for now, but I think I need to write something. A short story is now in my head that cannot be removed. I don't know if it is the right thing to do or the wrong thing, but I have to write out and play it in my mind.   Hope my favorite editor NNN is still up to the challenge.   The Big Squeeze is still being written, so don't worry, I haven't abandoned that story.

Ugh....Prayer during dim sum for each dish

This just happened about 5 hours ago, my family were heading out for our weekly saturday morning dim sum meal, which is sort of like the Chinese version of brunch.   As we were sitting down in a crowded restaurant and waiting for our food, two middle age Chinese girls came in and "dap tor" (Chinese saying for "sharing tables") with us. It's not the first time we shared a table with others and it is pretty natural in large restaurants among Chinese people as large tables can not usually be used

Interesting SF may rename airport after Harvey Milk

http://www.cnn.com/2013/01/15/travel/san-francisco-harvey-milk-airport/index.html?hpt=hp_bn10   Nothing groundbreaking or politically charged, at least for gay guys. It seems interesting that the SF airport may be renamed after one of the first openly gay politician in the US. It's also a good sign for international recognition in small ways that SF is open to all walks of life. (Though Boston is still a good alternative ).   Who knows, maybe Boston Logan Airport will be renamed the Gerry S

Who wants a Death Star that costs $850 Quadrillion?

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2013/01/11/white-house-responds-to-death-star-petition-no/   So who wants to build a Death Star, I mean we might need slave labor and a fleet of star destroyers to guard it, but hey it can blow up planets (We need to get rid of a few dwarf planets anyway, like Pluto )   For contractors, we definitely need a Sith lord, we will offer generous terms like a dimly lit throne room near the power core (Guard rails optional), and if he does a good job, who knows

Giv'em hell Christie, I can't believe he went all out

Just my two cents in support of Christie's short speech and press conference:   I have to make a political comment on this, because it is so rare and something that needs a round of applause from everyone. It was unapologetic, strong, and aggressively real. Things that the Republican party of the 21st century seems to lack. It also did something I was hoping to see more from Northern Republicans, be blunt about the Hypocrisy of Southern Red States and the federal aid that goes there. I never e

Some thoughts about this new world

I wrote a poem this morning about the end of an era and I want to explain it.   Today 12/21/2012 marks the end of an age/era in Mayan calendars. However, what type of era, do we live in now?   Gay rights is winning left and right, gay marriage seems on the cusp of success and the majority of people no longer thinks of us as mentally ill. The religious fanatics are dying out along with a generation of hate mongers, racists, and generally "bad" people. Science is reaching greater heights and g

Tragedy, Writing, and the Hobbit- Some Recap from WL

First I want my prayers and hopes to go out to those kids killed today in Connecticut, it was so sad to hear. I am not going to be picking up a picket sign to outlaw the 2nd amendment anytime soon, but we have seen just too much tragedy from gun related crimes in recent months. I am just tired of hearing about tragedies and tired of seeing innocent blood spilled over random acts of violence. Something has to be done about gun ownership in the US, whether it is by state law or national law.   A

Back from Florida with some changes, fun memories, and an odd sense of peace

Well, as I said, I went to West Palm Beach over the week.   The trip was a business oriented session that was both fun and interesting. I've usually been able to control my drinking to prevent myself from going into la-la land, but I did not during the staff Christmas party down there. Two coke and rums, plus 3 glasses of Chardonnay in two hours, I had my very first black out in years.   I don't know if everyone experiences the same things during a black out, but mine was very odd and sort o

Fantasizing about a cute hispanic janitor

Alright let me just explain this without political correctness; I was working a little late the other night and the janitors came in. I wanted to say hello and introduce myself, with the new job and all. One of the guys caught my eye though.   He was probably late twenties or early thirties, had black hair, small tight build almost zero muscle mass, and had a very thick spanish accent. He wore an erring on his right ear, which I hoped means he's my kind of guy and not just in it for a fashion

Holiday mood and Hope in the World

There's something about this of year, when people and things just make you happier and feel good about life. The Holiday period is fun and exciting, people have hopes for the future.   I don't know whether it's the colorful displays of lights, faux green wreaths with red bows, or the shoppers that pack the buses at night, but the mood is different. For a few moments, you can almost forget that the world is hanging by a thread, civilization is putting itself in debt and its future generations.
