Football 101- More Offense

The I Formation (pronounced "eye" formation) have the backs stacked in the backfield. Typically it is used as a running formation but you can pass out of it too. Many teams that use the I Formation often call the "deep back" a tailback rather than a halfback. This offense needs a strong runner in that position as it is featured in this formation. You will see it used extensively at the college level. The pros use it- sometimes on short yardage situations like 3 and 3 to give the defense a pass o

Football 101- Basic Offense & Positions

The Pro Set is one of the most basic formations you will see. Almost all the pro teas run it at one time or another. It is a balanced offense from which a team can either pass of run.   Positions-   Offensive Line: the offensive lines job is to open holes for runners of protect the quarterback on passing plays. Although O-lines don't get much press, they have got to perform their job or the offense is going nowhere.   C or Center snaps the ball to the QB and then blocks or protects the pas

NFL Preview

AFC 2008 Preview/Predictions     AFC North   Steelers- After going 10-6 last year and enjoying a very productive draft, Pittsburg is set to capture the division again. The New Face of our Galaxy

The good people working with the Spitzer space telescope have made a huge discovery. Spitzer sees in a number of bands of the infrared spectra some of which have never been possible to explore before. Our atmosphere absorbs a large chunk of the infrared spectra- specifically microwaves.   Spitzers position high above our atmosphere allows it to see and explore things that human eyes simply can not and have only now begun to have the ability to explore.   Our understanding of our own home ga

Modern Classics- the Doors

A long time ago on a beach far away, Jim Morrison and Ray Mansarek met. What followed was one of those spontaneous reactions that is only possible when the chemistry and times are right. The Doors are Jim Morrison(singer), Ray Mansarek(keyboards), Robbie Kreiger(guitar) and John Densmore(drums).     The Doors emerged from the LA club scene with their breakout album the Doors in 1967. Their debut album had two number ones, was the #2 album of the year and is listed on everyones list of Class

Classic Rock Profiles

A few notes about the profiles:   I will take each band and present its original albums in chronological order. I will list the year of the album release and show its most common album cover.   Each album will link to Google Music to show a list of tracks on the album and independent reviews.   Where possible, I will use U-tube or other video provider to show classic tracks from the albums.   Hot links to U-tube or Google Music appear in red. I suggest opening them in a new tab in Firefo

My Entries to the Urban Dictionary

As you might imagine, those of us that live here in the South have a rather unique way of saying things. I decided to save some authentic 70s Southern Slang with the assistance of the good folks at the urban dictionary. I'm doing my part to perserve a rich but vanishing heiratage that most yuppies have forgotten now because they were too f**ked up at the time to remember them. You know- the same retarded hypocritical assholes who declared war on drugs and probably still have bong tar stains on t

I'm tired

Today I finished up a rather big project that I've been working on.   In the front of the house are two Azalea beds that have been there since the sixties. The Bushes are large but scraggly and unhealthy because the soil under them is worn out.   My job: dig up the bushes, replant them. Dig up the old beds and clean out the roots. Remove some of the dirt. Test the soil and figure out what it needs. Add: sand, top soil, peat moss, humas, etc. Till it up. Put the plastic border down. Smooth

Safe mode is your friend

Windows XP is a wonder. It has thousands of files and a registry that turns mere mortals into jelly should they attempt to play with it.   As fancy as it is, Xp users can run into a lot of headaches. Viruses, worms and spyware (Oh my. ) are a sad fact of intenet life and anyone that has suffered their wrath won't soon forget it.   A feature of XP that many people either forget about or have never hear of is called Safe Mode. When you boot the system hit the F8 key and windows will load with

Climate Change- please get it right!

Climate change is very real and it has been going on in cycles since the planet formed.   Three Orbital cycles that affect climate: Orbital Eccentricity: 100,000 year Cycle Orbital Tilt: 42,000 year cycle Orbital Wobble: 25,800 year cycle   Orbital Eccentricity: the earth's orbit around the sun forms an ellipse. Every 100,000 years or so the ellipse "flops" into a pattern that changes solar exposure. This trend is working is way to a peak this century.   Orbital Tilt: The t

Aussie makes huge astronomical discovery

The Milky Way is twice the size we thought it was University of Sydney 20 February 2008 Source Link     We were tossing around ideas about the size of the Galaxy, and thought we had better check the standard numbers that everyone uses," Professor Gaensler said. In Defense of Hate

Hate has a bad rap. For generations the Christian church have sought to discourage it. Lately it has become politically incorrect.   Hate is one of the most basic and powerful emotions. It's also one of the most honest if you understand where it comes from.   In studying apes, our closest biological relatives, they have two basic emotions: yikes and goody. All the rest of their emotional states are somewhere in between. Goody we can all understand. It's the reaction to spending time with our

20 reasons why no one wants to win in November

Does it seem like no one wants to win in November? There may be something to that.   The United States faces a perfect economic storm which has the potential to cause economic problems the likes of which haven't been seen since the 1930's. These twenty domestic and foreign policy problems will give the new resident of the White House many sleepless nights.     Item 1: 100/barrel oil- The US economy is based on cheap oil and can not sustain 100/barrel oil prices without causing inflation or

Mercury Messenger's First Look

Here is Messenger's first look at Mercury: the first pictures since Mariner 10 made three fly bys in 1974 and 1975.   It is believed that Mercury's surface has been largely undisturbed since the Solar Systems late bombardment phase ~4-5 billion years ago.   Over the next few months Messenger will settle in to an orbit of Mercury and will stay there for extended studies of the planet.

NASA's Messenger (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging) probe made its first fly-by of Mercury today and over the next few months will settle into orbit for an extended study of the planet.   Messenger is the first probe to visit Mercury since Mariner 10 back in 1975.   Because of its position in the solar system, Mercury is very unique planet. Constantly seared by heat and radiation from the sun, the chemistry of Mercury has been skewed. All of the volitile elements

Movie Madness

Once upon a time movies were original. Many were adaptations of novels, short stories or plays. Sadly- times have changed.   Many of todays movies are regurgitations of successful movies of yesterday.   This Christmas season, there were four BIG movies that were re-writes in part or in total. The one that did the best, Will Smith's I Am Legend was a post-apocalyptic horror story, re-did Charlton Heston's Omega Man of the seventies which was in turn based on a novel. Wil Smith's version of th

Jokes in really bad taste

Q: What was the last thing to go through Pakistani oppisition leader Benazir Bhutto's mind when she was killed by a suicide bomber?   A: Her hubcaps.     A man was riding in the back of his limousine when he saw a man eating grass by the roadside. He ordered his driver to stop and he got out to investigate. "Why are you eating grass?" he asked the man.   "I don't have any money for food," the poor man replied.   "Oh, please come to my house!"   "But sir, I have a wife and four

US vs Canada

Head to head, the US can't stand on the same field as Canada.   For health care, human rights, progressive vision, a population that understands and supports the value of diversity and dismisses religious fanatics and bigotry: Canada has it all over the US.   This is one match the US had better sleaze its way out of of they'll be reminded what an embarrassment that they really are: the spoiled wretched weak children of strong parents who deserved better: trading freedom for fear, looting the

18 in 1980: Memories of the Epidemic

When AIDS first appeared, here in Mississippi peoples attitudes were, like every social trend, it won't come here for another twenty years. Unfortunately for a lost generation, they were dead wrong. People started dying in 85. By 1990 the numbers were actually alarming.   In 82 & 83, the HIV virus hadn't even been isolated yet. It acted like a virus but science had never dealt with a retro-virus before. CDC nor anyone else in the medical community knew enough about HIV/AIDS to state anythi
