The Long Dark Silence

It is my understanding that my readers generally consider themselves pretty lucky - because they get 'fed' new stories and chapters on a regular and normally rather speedy basis.

With yesterday marking the end of Redemption's A Bitch, and tomorrow being the end of the short five chapter Six Billion Credit Rent Boy, a bit of a wait now ensues.

I am writing. The end of Tiger Winter is in sight, and it is massive now, standing around 120K, and into my NaNoWriMo word count I have also managed to insert 8000-odd words for my Chain Reaction Anthology story - so there is that to look forwards to.

But there is going to be a bit of a wait. I have yet to decide what I am going to do with Tiger Winter. It is much too large to go into a multi-book single volume published edition, and due to the general lack of good feeling towards the idea of crowdsourcing, I am not sure which avenue to take.

A lot of people will tell me to just upload it here, for everyone to enjoy, and I am not against that prospect either. I love writing, I love sharing my universes with all of you, and making you happy (or sad, or angry, or mixes of many emotions and hungry to boot), but I want to see my work on a bookshelf one day, not just on the 'shelves' of Amazon. Surely that's not too much to ask?

I do not know of the immediate future regarding this book, I think that TW probably has too much sex to be commercially viable, but who knows. It is hard to make a decision between the love of readers, and the inevitable lack of passion as soon as the word 'money' is mentioned.

Take blankets and snacks, and a torch for the dark.

I think you've got an absolute right to try and sell your work, as good as it is.

I'll be sad if you stop coming in to stamp and curse about your horse flinging you off though.

You could switch to poetry for a bit. No one ever buys poetry.

I'm not saying I won't upload anything here - after all no one buys short stories either! and i love my short stories. I just think I need to try for more.

Your last statement made me smile.  My friends laugh at me when we do a road trip and I always take a blanket, flashlight, and water and snacks.  Needless to say a couple of years ago when we went to the mountains and I talked them into doing the same, after we sat over three hours in a traffic jam in upper Tennessee, I don't have to tell them anymore.  We were all under our blankets, eating, listening to music and playing scrabble. :P

As for your writing, you've been such a constant, a little wait won't hurt any of us. :)

I have infected my husband with this! His car now contains snacks, a blanket, a tarp, a crowbar (his idea, he saw a car crash very near him and the woman's door would open, people panicked), and a hunting knife.

Thank you Joann, it's nice to know.

As you know, I've two of your books on my bookshelves (available here for free), and I'm not opposed to spending a few green backs for a good book, you most definitely know that, too. Also, I've purchased two anthologies in kindle format just because they contained short stories written by you. I'm enthusiastic of your writing. Because of the aforementioned, I find your remark about interest declining when money is mentioned slightly disturbing. It implies that all is well and good as long as it's free but from the forum thread pertaining to the crowd source idea, if we take people at their word, we learn that isn't the whole reason. Some weren't interested in the subject matter and some others were simply unable financially to participate despite having an interest. So, I'm thinking the remark was made out of frustration, and I hope that you don't actually feel this way.

It is partially frustration, but it is also partially true. There have been a number of private conversations wherein people have let it be known (and to be fair, not just people here on GA) that they are not willing to part with money for something they have until now been able to get for free.

I love and adore you for having purchased my work (and for lots of other reasons too): but you are in the extreme minority I am afraid.

It's hard to argue with this. I'm sorry to hear it, too. You have a big following here on GA. All anyone has to do is look at the likes for your stories to know that, not to mention the other proofs. Have you considered going the GA Premium Content route with some stories? Or occasionally posting a preview chapter and then selling the full story as an e-book here? I don't know what would benefit you the most (not just here but anywhere) but the current situation doesn't seem tenable to you and I can certainly understand you wanting to benefit from your abilities. You should.

Love you right back.

you're not allowed to post "teaser" chapters. I have been reprimanded for trying to do so before.

I have no problem with paying for your books (as you know), I just prefer them as eBooks...

and I'll wait patiently for you to write and post at what ever rate you're happy with. :)
