I like the sound and mood of this word.  I also like the memories it brings to me. Tempestuous describes many of my students in elementary when the holidays were near, or they got to do something hands on like a science project.

There are also many GA writers whose MC's have very tempestuous relationships. I'm sure @Comicality would have a field day writing an essay on how to write Tempestuous Relationships in the Writing World blog.

(Assuming he hasn't already. I'm still trying to catch up on the essays he has already contributed.)
