Leave it to zoologists to use a Latin word meaning nostril hairs.  The word sounds more like a kinky sex toy to me.  I'm sticking with cat whiskers. 😁

It wasn't zoologists  since the first use was for human nasal hair. Usage for other mammals came much later.

Your are correct, Latins first used the word for human nasal hair.  I should have said leave it to zoologists to appropriate it to animals like mammals and birds.
