It comes from the Greek panoplia, which was the full set of armor worn by Greek warriors.

The L.G.B.T.Q.I.A.+ rainbow umbrella covers a panoply of people of different gender identities and sexual orientations.  If panoply were a board game it would be The Game of Life.
