From Old Norse, rannsaka means house search. In modern Swedish, it means to investigate or interrogate.

And I always thought it was a combination of the meanings of the words 'ran' and 'sack'.  To run through and take whatever you could get your hands on.

It's frightening to watch moms and suburban housewives ransack the stores in these last weeks before Christmas.
