Poetry Prompts

No, I didn't mix up the days and post the wrong blog :P Even though Friday is Prompt Day, I thought it would be a good idea to feature a series of prompts created by GA poet @AC Benus several years ago.  These prompts are a perfect stepping stone for anyone thinking of giving poetry a try, and are also useful exercises for more experienced poets.  Start at the beginning, for each prompt builds upon the rest.  Post your results here, or else in the Poetry Writers Club.  There are a lot of great resources for poets in that club, and it's also a great place to get feedback on your poetry.

OMG! A long, long time ago.....I dared to tip my toe in the  waters. This was a great help.

Wow! Yes, eight-and-a-half years ago I too joined in and wrote a Tanka - one of three poems I've published here on GA. They were simple things really but damn hard to do.

Thanks, @Valkyrie, for the surprise feature. The original poetry prompts are all in the link you attached, but I started to create a book version on how to write formed verse. Zero to Hero, a Guide can be found here.

There are 8 prompts there, and several essays on style, rhyming, and other topics. I had intended for this book to have 40 chapters, each featuring different forms, but frankly, the response to these new challenges was disheartening. Many complained the prompt challenges themselves were too hard, or were too uninspiring . . . .

I guess, some year, I'll get back to completing this as a print book

And thanks for your help in translating poems for the Ghazal and Carol prompt challenges. In a way, you set me on a course to look deeper and deeper into German-language poetry
