I'll admit that when I first saw that 'bayberry' was the word of the day, I thought of Mayberry, the fictional town in the old Andy Griffith Show.

I associate bayberry with Christmas. We always burned the aromatic green candles during the holiday.

The leaves are used to make bay rum.

Deer love them. Not the leaves, but they will mow the bare stems to the ground in the winter.

Deer may not like the leaves because they generally get stewed with them.

Bayberry only makes it to USDA Zone 7 which barely touches the northernmost part of Mississippi.

Zone 8 & 9 where I live is too hot and humid for them.
