Deer love them. Not the leaves, but they will mow the bare stems to the ground in the winter. 

Ask me how I know this.

Deer may not like the leaves because they generally get stewed with them.

Bayberry only makes it to USDA Zone 7 which barely touches the northernmost part of Mississippi.

Zone 8 & 9 where I live is too hot and humid for them.
