Peddlers used to travel around on wagons selling merchandise, operating like a mobile general store. Many of these ended up with their own stores. Some even ended up with chain stores.

These days all you need to be a peddler is internet access.

You don't see people peddling door-to-door like in the past, but there are other meaning for the word peddle as well.  You can also peddle a bike.   And if you want to think of peddle as a noun, there are gas and break peddles on a car, and sometimes a clutch peddle as well.

I think the most common type of peddlers you might see today are drug peddlers, although they are more commonly referred to as pushers.

And don't forget that in some cities and other locations, people also walk around peddling themselves for sex.

About forty years ago I was in a convenience store chatting with the manager. This guy came in who had a nearby drug store and joined our conversation. While we were talking, this little old lady comes in. While waiting to be checked out, she was listening to us chat. She looks at the druggist and asks, "What do you do?"

Without missing a beat and no clarification he said, "I sell drugs."

What amazed me was she just nodded her head and left.
