Proboscis is often used to describe a prominent human nose.

You might think of Jimmy Durante or W.C. Fields.

Proboscis comes from the Greek: pro (before) and boskein (feed) to become proboskis (means of obtaining food.

If you should ever one day get on Jeopardy! you should know that a proboscis is not a true nose, but part of the mouth.

There was a player on one of the teams I played on who had a huge beak. He was a lineman, so he was in the trenches getting down and dirty. It was inevitable. After a rough game, he broke his nose. It was big to start with, and then it began to swell. Taking it in good humor, he said now I have an attack proboscis!

He needed a nose guard.

What do you do if you have a big honker? If you're Robert De Niro, you tattoo a mole on your face.
