Most people's familiarity with ligature is from crime drama TV shows and victims with ligature marks.

Ligature comes from Latin: ligare(a bind) - ligat (bound)  Late Latin: ligatura (a band)  to Middle English: ligature

The first recorded use of the word ligature in English was in the 14th century.
