The word nausea comes from the Greek nausia or nautia, which originally meant seasickness (Greek naus = ship). 

Nauseous and nauseated are used interchangeably casually, but if you are writing formally, nauseated describes the feeling that you might throw up. Nauseous is an external stimulus that nauseates you, such as a nauseous smell or sight. 

According to most sources, the first recorded use of the word "nauseous" in English was in the early 1600s, appearing in Robert Cawdrey's dictionary "A Table Alphabeticall" around 1604, where it was defined as "loathing or disposed to vomit.".

Nauseous. Nehi Grape Soda and Sourheen Comfort. Unbelievably, It seemed like a good idea at the time.

Most people would regard the smell of rotting flesh to be nauseous but over 20,000 people lined up to see and hopefully smell the "corpse flower" when it bloomed in the Sydney Botanic Gardens last month. It was also streamed live and viewed a million times even without the opportunity to smell it. The corpse flower also known as Bunga Bangkai or Amorphophallus titanum, has the biggest, smelliest flower spike in the world. The smell is like rotting flesh and designed to attract insects like blow flies so they can cross pollinate with other corpse flowers.
