Solace is a 13th century borrowing from Latin by way of Anglo-French solas (noun), solacier (verb).  Its Latin ancestor solari means “to console.” (Solari itself is from the Greek word hilaros, meaning “cheerful”—also source, of course, of hilarious.) 

The earliest known use of the noun solace is in the Middle English period (1150—1500). OED's earliest evidence for solace is from around 1290, in South English Legendary.
