The various facets of this discussion reminds me of something a friend once said.  Paraphrasing: "If you are teaching someone born in a culture where another language than English is spoken, and you teach them 'butter' and then 'fly' -- then you say 'butterfly' without explaining, they will be confused."  Same analogy: If you define and spell 'ear' and define and spell 'nest' and then show them the word 'earnest' -- they will be confused.
