Bravura vs bravado vs bravery

Bravery is genuine courage, bravado is a false or boastful show of toughness, and bravura is a brilliant, showy display of artistic or technical skill.

Here is how to tell them apart with clear examples.

1. Bravery
  • Definition: The quality of facing danger, pain, or fear with true moral or physical strength.
  • Bravery Example: A firefighter runs into a burning building to save a trapped child.
  • Bravery Example: A student reports a group of cheaters to the principal, despite knowing classmates will be angry.
2. Bravado
  • Definition: An ostentatious or swaggering display of courage that is often put on to impress others or hide inner fear.
  • Bravado Example: A nervous teenager joins a dangerous skateboard stunt just to act tough in front of friends, while shaking inside.
  • Bravado Example: A losing boxer loudly brags before a match that he will knock out the champion in the first round.
3. Bravura
  • Definition: A flamboyant, highly skilled, and brilliant style of performance, especially in music, dance, or writing.
  • Bravura Example: The pianist played the final movement with incredible bravura, moving his fingers across the keys with breathtaking speed.
  • Bravura Example: The ballerina executed a stunning series of rapid turns in a final bravura performance that left the audience cheering.

And I'm embarrassed to say that I have never even heard of our, Word of the Day, until today.

On a positive note for me, I have learned a new word today, thank you.

I know I am going to regret asking, but why six fingered gloves?

A short story for you. Back in the early 70s, I played poker in the sergeants' mess with bunch of World War II artillery vets, every Thursday for a number of years, they are long gone now(rest in peace). The reason I mention this, is they were all gunners/loaders, the stories they could tell, were real eye openers, but back to your glove comment. Of the six regular players, except for one, the rest were missing fingers, three 1 missing, one 2 missing and one missing 3. Enemy counter fire was a constant threat, but in the heat of battle, their guns breech mechanism needed oil and often a finger or two as sacrifice.

A couple are sitting in church. The woman leans over and says, "I just let out one of those silent ones. What should I do?"

"Change the battery in your hearing aid."
