The word crepuscule comes from the Latin noun crepusculum, meaning evening twilight. Crepusculum derives from creper, which means "dark," "dusky," or "uncertain". Linguists trace creper further back to an ancient root, krepos-, meaning twilight. It adds the diminutive suffix -culum to the root. Romans originally used crepusculum specifically for the dim light of evening (reserving diluculum for the morning dawn). The term passed into Old and Middle French as crépuscule before being adopted into English.

According to the Oxford English Dictionsary (OED), the earliest known use of the noun crepuscule in English is from around 1400 in the Middle English writings of Geoffrey Chaucer.
