More than a thug

:music: I spent the night at my bf's house last night and we watched a dvd, a documentary about 2pac, and when I was listening to his interviews, I realized that he was so much more than he came off as in his songs. I mean, a lot of his songs were so brilliant. Im not sure how many people here listen to rap, but I love it, and my dad loves 2pac more than I do, so I was excited when I found out we were gonna see a movie about his life. What was so amazing to me was the fact that he talked about listening to Don Mc lean. One of his favorite songs was called Vincent, so I listened to it today, and it was a beautifull song that you would never expect a gangster rapper to like. I mean, 2pac seems like he was a guy who really wanted to do good things for the world, but no one understood him, and he eventually was murdered in a drive by shooting. His life is kind of like the words to the song....Now I understand what you tried to say to me, and how you suffered for youur sanity, and how you tried to set them free. They would not listen. They did not know how. Perhaps they'll listen now......It's tragic to think about how many good things 2pac could have accomplished if he would have been able to break through, but instead, he ended up a victim of his own demons. I could sit and listen to 2pac songs all day and hear different messages in them. He was a genuine artist, and even though I was only 5 when he was murdered, I still feel like he's been here my whole life, influencing me and making me think about things that no one else seems to care about.

As a general comment, I don't like rap. I was fortunate enough to have grown up without the automatic connection between anger and violence. It took being married with someone who had a very strong anger/violence connection and who went through a lot of counseling over it for me to understand (and experience) that connection. I find that rap in general embraces that connection, thus it does not connect with my heart because of the messenger.

That said, I think you will find as you grow older that all (non-psychotic) human beings tend to have the same wants/needs, but that sepcific socialization allows for only specific types of expression. A piece of 2pac's inner self may have come out via his music, much like any good authors puts a piece of their emotional self into the story. In reality this just makes him a good artist. That he was human, that he had feelings, that he had pain is a given; he was human. Whether or not he was a good person, can only be decided based upon his behavior and choices
