Dan, I am really enjoying all the references to Modesto and surrounding areas, in the Do Over stories and Dawn of Tears. (Those are the only stories I am reading, so far.) You must have had some really unpleasant experiences with First Baptist Church, to put it so prominently in both stories.

BTW, one of my high-school friends was Missionary Baptist... Don't they sort of think of the folks at First Baptist as too liberal? :)

Cheers,

Peter

P.S. Did you ever know anyone from the Dunkard Brethren (Old German Baptist) Church well enough to create a character? I knew a few at TDHS when I was there. They were quite visible, especially the girls because of how they dressed, but a bit outside the social mainstream at school, and, of course, quite conservative. Unlike most of your religious characters, the Old German Baptists whom I have known were and are people of kindness and integrity. I have never met any OGB people outside of Stanislaus County.

Hehe, local flavor indeed. However, you're a Downey guy so I'll give you a large slice of leniency. :) I've known a few Dunkard guys (corrupted one at one time as well...poor guy). They are very strict on the rules, but also extremely polite to 'outsiders'. Their level of honesty was actually refreshing as well.

As for First B, I've had a LOT of run-ins with them over the years.

Oh, and yes, Missionary Baptists do consider SOUTHERN Baptists (much less the First Baptist groups) to be too liberal. They also tend to believe that only they will really get into heaven. if the other groups do, it'll be as a kind of servant for the true 'children' of God.
