The mood is sooo tangible... It's a sad story, but described wonderfully...

Utterly depressing, utterly believable, and very well written.

The dreariness is so palpable that it makes me think of a similar

instance when I was a kid when my dad and I stopped at a café on the

outskirts of Siena to get something to drink. The café was dusty and

everything in it was old, including the sweets my dad bought me, and the

ugly plastic decorations, and the people in there who all had the

word 'loser' stamped on their foreheads.Okay that was a

side-note; what I wanted to say was that you built both atmosphere and

characters very effectively here and it left me wondering whether they'd

all end up with that 'loser' stamp on their foreheads, or if some of

them might escape that fate.

A sad story about a sad man resigned to a sad fate. It's not up to

your current standards, but it's still darned good. Thanks for sharing

it with us.

... ouch. You did a good job of setting the mood with this -

both the disaffected family at first, as well as the longing and

self-denial at the end. Being the sap that I am, I wish there had been a

happier ending, but the story succeeds in its own way.
