Plus someone offers to assist them with the debts, and he refuses for them out of pride. If I treated my parents like that, the rugby goons would be the least of my problems, LOL!

This wonderful story put me in mind of the former US Senator Harris Wofford who, after the death of his wife, at the age of 75 met a man on the beach 50 years his junior. They were open to love in spite of the age difference, and in 2016 at the ages of 90 and 40 were married. Sometimes you have to follow your heart in spite of what conventional wisdom says telling you otherwise.

I imagine that now that everyone carries a phone in their pocket and can instantly verify the accuracy of the digits this trick is less reliable. Would the updated process be to give the real number but block it ASAP?

I am put in mind of the queer purges of the 1950s in the US State Department that were prompted by the belief that gay men were susceptible to treason by blackmail because they feared being fired if they were outed. The circular rationale that the only risk the men posed was trying to keep their reputation safe from a homophobic government never occurred to anyone then, and even today, conservatives defend the practice... "Why would you fire him?" "Because he is homosexual and could be blackmailed." "Why would he be blackmailed?" "Because he is homosexual and if we find out he would be fired." "Why would you fire him?" "Because he is homosexual and could be blackmailed." Et cetera, et cetera, ad infinitum.
