    Let Me Start Over

Nobody's without fears. They usually cause us to act poorly toward others. These guys are teenagers, and appear mature until they're in over their heads. Then, you can see their lack of confidence tripping them up.

    Let Me Start Over

Casey's enjoying being popular and the center of attention for the first time. It's a dizzying feeling when you haven't known it before, and you find yourself with more than you ever dreamed of having - stability, belonging, being in demand. It's hard to see the change in yourself. Sometimes, it takes a while.
  3. Let Me Start Over Sam was in the driver seat, and James was riding shotgun in Mr. Reeves’ rusted-out pickup. The old truck’s shocks squeaked every time they hit a bump, and since the road wasn’t paved, the noise never stopped. “Take it easy, Sam! I just got a new filling, and I don’t want to lose it ‘cause you’re racing down a goat path.” Right then, Sam hit a deep rut. While the truck lurched, James clutched the door handle and he let out a yelp. “I wish this thing at least had seat belts
  4. Dammit, James. You just convinced me I'm every bit as boring as people say I am.
  5. I think I wrote before that I see James as a throwback, who understands the value of things others don't notice anymore. Luckily, he lives some place where he has access to nature. I don't think he would thrive in the city. You'll probably see more of Casey. And others. As long as you keep reading. It's Not Done Yet.

    A Better Place

Old souls like James need younger ones to remind them of their youth, and to pass on what they have learned. Younger souls like Sam soak it up like a sponge, too. I really appreciate all your help, and I'm glad you're enjoying the story.
  7. My fanged friend, nothing transcends the laws of physics, only our understanding of them. Matter and energy do not cease, they metamorphose. Your grandparents' love endures in widening ripples of cause and effect. I'm sorry for your loss. Take comfort in their peace.

    thanks
  9. Thank you very much for the review. Thanks, especially, for the one word, original. I'm going to take another look at the section that confused you and Lisa, and see what I could have done to make things more clear, or write around the issues. When two people have a similar comment, I'd be a fool not to take it to heart. That's the problem with writing out of order, and not giving it all to the editor at the same time. That's my impatience coming out. I'm glad you're enjoying the story. Thanks for helping me develop my storytelling.

  11. Thanks. I'm glad you're enjoying it.
  12. That's part of the trouble. Not telling anyone about Casey's situation is another, as well as lending him the stove. Old folks get very fixed ideas about bad blood. "No good ever came from any child of ____." I've heard that kind of stuff all my life. Usually from old folks. Younger ones are more circumspect, but still harbor lots of prejudices. People in insular communities are even more closed-minded.
  13. Independent is ONE word for him. It's a pretty good word, too. Guess I'd better get back to writing, huh?
  14. Things don't always turn out the way we think they will or should. Sometimes, they go wrong. Sometimes, they're pulled off track. Sometimes, they work out totally different. But ya know, it's Not Done Yet.
  15. Thanks for reading and commenting. At the risk of repeating myself, James is why I started this whole story, but he's not without his flaws.
  16. It's not just respect for life, it's existence. Remember, James is friends with lots of people, like Mr. Reeves and the Fishers, who have special relationships with nature. I see James as a throwback to previous generations, before his granddad, when folks lived in harmony with the land. Old folks get cranky when they don't get their way, especially when they're not in good health.
  17. I like James a lot. He's the friend we all wish we'd had growing up.

    A Better Place

It's easy to forget just how young James is, too, since he's got his act together so well. At first, maybe he was trying to give Casey some space. Maybe he sensed Casey blamed him in some way. As time went by, and Casey got involved in life with the Fishers and at school, maybe he figured Casey didn't need him in his life.

    A Better Place

If you're not used to having close friends, failure can seem like the end of the world. Having James see it after all his kindness, and not having much self-esteem after being told his mother didn't even want him, who can blame him for not taking a risk by talking with James? And the longer you wait, the greater the dread.

    A Better Place

It's tempting to hold kids to a standard they haven't reached, especially when they're mature in many ways. But it's not as if either Casey or James has been out in the world much. That makes it tougher to take a risk, and when you're that age, everything is SO important, and you don't have the confidence that comes with experience. The innocence of that first friendship may not ever be regained. Scars on the inside don't permit it, but they may have something deeper in store.
  21. James is bold and shy, both. You can never tell where relationships will go when you've got complicated people in the mix, and circumstances aren't settled, either.

    If It Was Just Me

You're right. Abusive to one is usually abusive to all. We never know where help will come from, any more than what daggers there are that we don't see. Assuming that either is there.
  23. Several chapters later, I'm still learning about these characters. I hope I can keep you interested 'til it IS done.
