    Chapter 2: Haze

Well there is a kiwi couple of characters on their way but I couldn't spell the accent so I just described it and left it to the readers imagination!I'm gonna add some 'ehs' next time they speak ... Maybe even a 'jandal' if the opportunity arises. Thanks for reading and for putting aside your own stuff ... Hope your readers don't blame me!
  2. Wow word of mouth ... im gonna take that as a huge compliment :-)Yeah Blake is suppose to be a pretty flawed character, if you read on you'll notice the others are too ... but since its from Blake's POV it takes a while to flesh out other characters.anyway, thanks heaps for reviewing :-)ps, i dunno how any kiwi can mock the aussie accent ... my best friend is a kiwi and years later i still snigger when she says sucks (6)

  4. Later that morning, Blake sat on the cool concrete stairs out front of the Kulibari Bay Diving shop, sipping at a takeaway cup of coffee he’d just bought from the town’s cafe. He was still feeling a little hung over from the medication and was hoping some caffeine would help offset any lingering drowsiness. He really didn’t want his workmates to notice him acting any differently. As he sat there he thought about Haze, trying to decide whether or not he should speak to him. Earlier that mornin
  5. Early the next morning, Blake’s eyes slowly opened and peered about the darkness of his room. It was so dark that he almost couldn’t see anything at all, just ghostly green shadows lit by the faint glow from his alarm clock. He felt tired and sleepy, but after a good ten minutes or so he came to wonder why he wasn’t actually falling asleep again. What time was it? He tried to lift his head off the pillow to check, but instead only frowned at how difficult he found this. He felt weak and di
  6. The summer sun remained bright in the clear blue sky, but much lower by the time the boat arrived back at the jetty that afternoon. Weary but in good spirits, the tourists helped the crew pass empty cylinders and other gear from the boat to the jetty and then onto the trailer. Once packed, everyone filed onto the bus, but as Blake approached, Jill placed her arm across the doorway to block him from boarding. “Actually, today I want you to stay and help clean up,” she told him. Blake was
  7. Blake tried to stop his hand from trembling as he shovelled another spoonful of muesli into his mouth. He chewed it so intently it made his jaw ache. On his other hand he was rhythmically tapping his thumb against the edge of each finger in turn. Six to eight taps from the pad of his thumb onto the side of the tip of each finger, just on the edge of the nail. As he did this he mumbled a repetitive statement aloud but softly. “Even though I hate this shirt, I’m still going to go to work tod
  8. The ‘Kulibari Billabong’ was a small semi-outdoor bar with a few pool tables under thatched awnings and some plastic chairs and tables outside. There was no front door to speak of, as the entire side facing the bay was open. There was a proper bar inside though, with stools and some beer on tap. They even had low carb beer, Blake was delighted to discover. Only in the bottle though. Blake had been chatting to Nats for a while now and was, for the most part, enjoying himself. He had been disap

    Chapter 2: Haze

A while later, jet lagged, hot and dehydrated, Blake found himself snoozing briefly when a loud rapping at the door startled him awake. “Mate its Jill, open up!” came a demanding tone that brooked no nonsense. Blake fumbled about for a bit, checking in the small bathroom mirror to make sure he was presentable. It took much less time than was normal for him, although he had prepared for this earlier. He then hurried to answer the door, to meet his new boss. Technically they had met befor
  10. The desert seemed endless. Red sand was flashing by, broken only by the occasional thorny grey grass or desert scrub. Such a vast empty expanse. Barren, but a beautiful kind of barren, Blake mused. “Where ya from?” the women asked. She spoke with a thick Aussie accent. The kind of accent Australian characters in some movie or sitcom would use. A walking stereotype, he thought, before rebuking himself for the nasty sentiment. “Sydney,” he replied, almost shouting to be heard over the roar o

    A New Life

Blake has decided to abandon his life in Sydney to work as a divemaster in a tiny tourist town in the remote Australian outback. Not so much a ‘decision’ as an act of desperation, the change proves more difficult than he hoped, as problems left behind end up following. Starting a new life won't be easy, but luckily there’s a gorgeous co-worker to distract him ...
