  1. The commercial production of many vegetables depends upon the slave labor of bees. They're forced to live in artificial hives, and their queen is held prisoner. I don't see how vegetarians can live with themselves.
  2. The dollar is very low right now, so the exchange rate is terrible. Then there's $15 to check the first bag and $25 for the second. Now that they charge you $2 for a bottle of water, think how much that would run on a trip of that duration.
  3. You show us this beautiful picture, then you go on about how you don't look like that any more. (OK, so I kinda figured you weren't really in black-and-white.)
  4. BOO! I liked that cute picture. Bring it back. Sigh.
  5. With all those tight ends and wide receivers, it's no surprise. And the QB looks pretty chummy with the center on most plays. A guy told me that his real estate agent in Charleston, SC, is gay and used to be a football star. The pictures are nice, but you really can't see what the players look like during a game. I always thought Doug Flutie was worth watching, though. That's basically it. If one of your guys kicks the ball between those big vertical bars, that's good, too. It helps if you can stop the other guys from doing either of those things. You get four shots at moving the ball 10 yards down the field. That's 0.9144 meters or about 20 cubits, for those of you who don't use the US system. Then the other team gets their four tries. The rest are details.
  6. No, in cases like theirs surely the fear is primarily fear of getting caught. It may be that for high-profile folk that the thrill of risky behavior is more of a turn-on than the sex, or at least a big part of it. I think their public homophobia would be more of a smoke screen than anything else. More generally, I agree with about everything in this thread. Being obsessed with someone else's sex life, of whatever form, is pretty kinky. One might disapprove of homosexuality, oppose political rights for gays, etc., fairly dispassionately, just as one can rationally entertain a lot of ideas, good or bad. But when it becomes an obsession, then that likely says more about the person than about the people or ideas that the person opposes.
  7. My thoughts exactly.
  8. I'm still trying to figure out the topic title. I mean how many ways can you mix metaphors in just ten words, one of which is presumably a typo.
  9. I unsuccessfully Googled looking for the story where a family was driving through Cocke County (I think), and the father lost his wallet at a gas station, and the highway patrol chased them down, messed with them for a while, and then shot their dog. I guess it's old enough news to have scrolled off newspaper sites. But I did find this story about the tourist ads from SC. The Greenville guy does have a point that they shouldn't suggest there are any gay beaches in SC.
  10. SC is not particularly more homophobic than any of the surrounding states. Greenville is a hotbed of the Religious Right, but I suspect even there one would find a lot of welcoming, accepting people. Come to think of it, I know a gay man who visits a friend there often. He's never said anything bad about the place. It's just that some politician saw a way to score some points with constituents by combining homophobia with the usual stupid pandering about government waste, you know the kind that strains out gnats and swallows camels. Charleston is pretty neat to visit, and I bet they have a significant gay population. The NAACP wants you to boycott the state because they still have the Confederate naval flag on the state capitol grounds somewhere. Just don't loose your wallet, or they'll shoot your dog.
  11. Maybe he is a pretty good actor. Fortunately for you, he gave up the act early on. Somewhere (maybe on this site) I saw a list of signs of people to avoid. Being rude to one's restaurant server was right on the list.
  12. "Why is this night different from all other nights?" Seems like that question has been asked somewhere before. Since that time appears to have been 3:12 am EDT, I was probably asleep.
  13. Uninterruptable power supplies are not that expensive if you don't get one that goes on for hours. When I lived in the country, there would be a lot of outages of just a couple of seconds. Also, I had reason to distrust the quality of the electrical transmissions. When I got a UPS, not only did it keep the computer going during short outages, but it also gave some protection from the weirdness of the current. My first one had lights that showed when the voltage was too high or low, and they would kick on several times a day. (I also put higher-voltage-rated light bulbs in the hall, and they didn't blow out every few days, like regular bulbs did on that circuit.) The good side of your ordeal is that you had an excuse to get a 500 GB hard drive. Congratulations on getting the computer going again, and more so on having the smarts to work it out.
  14. The one welcome exception is in the "Show Yourself" thread, where people keep repeating cute pictures in their quoting, so one can continue to see them on more than one page of the thread.
  15. In a galaxy far away?
  16. I figured that what you meant. (Seemed more likely than your being a big fan of the song "Color My World," whose arpeggio accompaniment begins like that.) You could be more obscure and more military by reversing the notes: "ABOUT FACE!" :2hands:
  17. Thanks. Death Note fans should recognize L. He's a character I can relate to in several ways, except that I usually wear shoes.
  18. After reading on this thread, I decided that it was finally time I had an avatar before my third anniversary here. This was when I had more hair.
  19. Tonight's forecast: Dark.
  20. Try some of the great German lieder with texts by Romantic poets. Even the happy ones tend toward brooding. One of my favorites is from Schumann's Dichterliebe. Translation from Wikipedia: I think it's the next to last one in that video whose text is That's dark and brooding.
  21. Throw in a New Orleans locale, a lot of smoking, playing some pool, and eating po' boys, and you can go to Nifty and see the stories of Brew Maxwell. I enjoy them. He's got his clich
  22. I used to enjoy Railroad Tycoon, but I would get bored if I played it in real time. But having fifty years pass in less than an evening, OK.
  23. Worked for President Clinton,: "I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky." Sounded like either "frottage" or "inter-femoral." Oh, and -- Roses are red. Violets are blue. Some poems rhyme. Some don't.
  24. Beef cattle and dairy cattle are generally different breeds specialized for their appropriate functions. Most beef you eat doesn't come from retired dairy cows.
