    Summer

There's still a ringing in my ears from last night because the damn music was up too loud at the dance. Brooke sure knows how to cut a rug, and so does her sister; poor Mattie had no choice. Kelly sure as hell wasn't about to let Mattie stay pinned to the wall all night. She made him get up and dance, and she took him right where she wanted him. He didn't do too bad, but he looked like a fish out of water for a while. I think she likes him. Mattie does pretty well with the line dances. Guess w

    Mattie

Thanks Lisa! I got so many emails about Lem and when I was going to finish updating this edition, that I decided I should probably get Lem up with some of the companion chapters of Shadow, and let Montana Burns permeate a little bit. I will come back to MB soon. This one should be fully up within two to three months, if I keep a steady pace. (Assuming life doesn't get nuts again...)

I hang my arm out the window and let the warm breeze tickle over the back of my hand. Today was the last day of school for the year--my last day as a sophomore. Damn, it feels good to be free. Ronnie, Mattie and me, we're all crammed in Ronnie's truck, taking a quick joy-ride through Burlee on our way to the 4H arena for practice. Burlee sits just inside Hill County. Highway 2 runs right through the town and crosses Main Street, the other big street in town. There's a grocery store on one corn

    Mattie

There's a heaping pile of horse shit on the ground. I scoop up the hay underneath it with a manure fork and work it toward the wheel-barrel we use for cleaning muck. I back into the corner and feel someone lift my hat off my head. I turn around. The horse in the next stall over has my hat in his mouth, by the brim. "Smokey, you asshole." I dump the apples and lean the fork against the wall. When I try to grab at my hat, Smokey lifts his head and swaps ends. Chase hoses down a stall across the

    Mom in a Box

I have to say that this one did get to me a bit, knowing first hand how cancer can cut a family in half. Well executed story-wise, very nicely played. While I think I understand your motives for having them in this chapter, I almost wish the flashback sequences would have been dispersed through the entire story to create more empathy for the main character. I think this chapter shines, as you really see the raw emotion for the first time. Until this chapter, it was hard for me to really sympathize with Rory, because we didn't know what he had truly lost. All we could see was his angst.

    Lem

Lem and Mattie have been best friends, and neighbors, since they were little. Both raised on Montana ranches, they grew up in a world of 4H and Rodeo, but Lem finds himself insatiably attracted to Jeff, an older boy that just moved in. Lem soon after discovers that he is also the object of his best friend's desires. It's a truth that blows up in both Mattie and Lem's faces, as Mattie finds himself seriously depressed, and Lem finds himself lost without his best friend.

    Lem

I’ve got this drop feeling in my stomach right now. That fuzzy little tingling in my nuts like I might get into trouble for what I’m about to do. Jason does this all the time and gets away with it somehow. I’m the good kid. It shouldn’t be a problem - they trust me. Why wouldn’t they? I’m standing at the top of the steps, just staring at the handrail. Paying particular attention to the grain of the wood. The way the angle of the bar matches the slant of the steps. I can barely see one little c

    Prologue

Prologue Mattie and me're layin' on our sleeping bags on the back porch, watchin' the sky. He's resting his head on my chest, lookin' like he's fixin' to fall asleep on me. I feel like I'm 'bout ready to doze off, myself. He sighs, rolls over so he's lookin' up at my face. "Lem?" "Yeah?" "We'll still be friends after school starts, right?" I blink at him. "Mattie, it's only seventh grade." "But it's in a different town. We don't get to ride the same bus anymore." "Havre's on
  10. I have no idea, honestly. This place seems like a much nicer platform, and I really like what I see with the community here voting on stories and being able to leave comments. It's nice. But either way, I'm glad to be here.
  11. I like to listen to Ambient music that suits the mood to whatever I'm writing, things like Belong, Brian Eno, Jakatta, Jonathan Elias, etc... If not, I listen to . :3
  12. Moist. I don't know why, but it's one of those words that make me cringe.
  13. Scandinavia and the World is a favorite. Love VGCats and Capital Hillbillies. :3
  14. Finally, some hope for the HRC movement. One step at a time. D
  15. Anyone remember that episode of Rocco's Modern Life where they had kitchens and bathrooms installed in the whole house?? I loved Clarissa Explains It All and The Adventures of Pete and Pete. (I almost got a petunia tattoo.) :S Dave
  16. Hello, everyone. I'm Dave, I wrote the story Lem over on Nifty a few years ago. I've been looking for a new forum with better community support for my works, and so I thought I would try out GA. Hopefully soon, I will be bringing Lem and a sequel here. Nice to meet you all.
