No, not out of the ordinary, but to someone like JP who has made a career researching significant historical events, I am surprised that he is so quick to dismiss the events of early 2001. IMHO US news is not always the best source for important goings on in the world and just because Americans don't always show interest in the events around them doesn't mean they aren't significant. If that were true and JP only focused on issues that were interesting to mainstream America, he would not have chosen Algeria to research in the OG CAP story. I get that for most folks 2001 probably seemed like a slow year, but I think there was a lot more going on if one looks beneath the surface. JP seems like the kind of character that would look; it's not a crime that he didn't. I also get that compared to the events of 9/11 just about everything pales in comparison.

OR How about Scott goes to NYC to open an east coast branch of his shop in early Sep? Me thinks it could work. I am surprised that JP of all people seems to think that this particular period in time is so calm. I would think that events like: -Holland being the first country in the world to legalize same sex marriage since ye really olden times -The first of Bush's infamous and subsequently short sighted tax cuts (but hey hindsight is 20/20 so...) -Continued tension in Middle East with Hamas bombing in Tel Aviv, World Conference on Racism, and US exerting efforts to disarm/disable Iraq's air defenses to list a few -Not to mention the launch of Wikipedia making homework more interesting for educators everywhere Would hold more interest to someone like JP given how worldly and connected to the subtler details he has been in past stories. Maybe he's too wrapped up in the family snark and Claremont's revitalization to put much introspection into what's going on. Sadly, soon enough events will be so blatant they will dwarf the petty drama of day to day trials. Fun chapter, continued thanks.

I agree completely about focus being so diverted to Will that JJ fell through the cracks. It is a strategy I relied on as a kid to get away with murder. Yeah, Jeanine was/is a stage mother, just one with a moral compass so skewed that she was willing to sacrifice anything (JJ's well being, Tiffany's esteem) to further JJ's career. I do not agree that she had his best interests at heart, though. I seriously worry about Maddy. I do not see JJ as the typical teenager, none of the Crampton/Schluter kids are typical, their wealth and unique family situation prevents that. Sure JJ is of the age that friends and interests are really important, but I also think that he especially immerses himself into skating (does he have any friends other than Alistair?) because he doesn't really have anything else. The truth is we don't really know what's going on in JJ's head, we can only speculate because we haven't had the luxury of the insight of his perspective. JJ right now is a bit flat, but I think he has the most potential given what's happened to him in his short life. Unfortunately, I can easily see him following down a similar path that Brian did, which would be heart breaking as JJ is in my my top eight.

I would; I find that rereading Mark's tales the perfect procrastination tools to put off my own writing. Besides if I am going to go head to head with Methodwriter85 on faces of CAP I need to be on the ball .

I'm not sure about JJ thinking that he doesn't have to be loyal because Will and Darius have it covered. If I were him, my lack of loyalty would be directly correlated to the fact I am an outsider, and not in the way that Will sometimes feels, but really not part of that family. Everyone has failed JJ; Jeanine has most of all. I also really struggle with her not knowing something was going on with JJ's sexual abuse. Michael, his former body guard (why isn't he dead?), was always in his crap. Besides I also figure since she had no qualms letting that jerk photograph Will and the pictures were on the same chip how could she not know about JJ. I wonder what Hank would think if she knew about Jeanine's antics in Norway and the revelation about JJ's molestation. If Hank can't handle a little pot, I don't figure her being able to brush aside child molestation and pornography as a by product of temporary crazy. Anyhoo...I look forward to hearing JJ's perspective one day (HINT HINT ).

I've been trying (quasi successfully) to GA detox for a few days so I missed this and since I am all for kicking dead horses to make sure they are really dead: NOOOOO!, Will should not sleep with Scott Slater; aside from the age gap Scott's a ginormo douche. And if some crazy, drunken, mishap occurs, I think Brad would go AGRO, batshit, bananas on Scott for taking advantage of not only his very young son but his kindness (Scott would be dead if it weren't for Brad) Thanks again for Chap 17...it was a great reason to throw my detox resolve away .

I get that Bay reacted badly to Zach's sympathy and it was a bad move to kiss him, but honestly Zach sounds line he was a pretty shitty friend to start with. You didn't ask me but here was my take growing up in Bay Area. Sick was more common and universal than the bomb; which was still used but usually in über white areas because by that time cool urban kids had moved on. Parents used it if that helps indicate its place on the coolness meter and it was too soon in serious usage to be used ironically. I don't cringe as much because rich kids are usually the last to pick up on the latest slang. If Will went to Oakland Tech, "the bomb" would have flopped. He probably would have gotten snickers at Head Royce given its urban location. One could argue East Palo Alto is close but the creek might as well be a wall on how separate EPA is from PA. Things are changing but it's a long process. Beast was not common on the west coast; liked "wicked" the only people that I knew who used it were transplants. Hella (or hecka for those who didn't wanna curse ) are and have been NorCal staples for as long as I can remember. No Doubt released the song Hella Good in 2001 in honor the NorCal (Bay Area specific) slang.

It really depends on your own ability to navigate difficult terrain.

An Odyssey and 9.11 chapter in one night, it's Xmas in June! It's refreshing that Brad and Will seem to finally relate to one another in a productive way. I am starting to wonder if Brad's hesitance to share certain things has more to do with pride than lack of trust/faith in Will. Brad suffers from hubrisitis in the worst way and sharing the less glamorous parts of his troubles with his partner with anyone has got to be kind of hard for him. I am proud of both Will and Brad for not falling into the snarky abyss that seems to be so inviting when they disagree. Thanks again for sharing; now begins the torturous wait until my next fix.
