  1. Thanks so much. What you say is very true. Who we are attracted to isn't really the point. What commitments we make do. Since Dean wants to make a life with Pam, it's all good. His parents are a little stuck in what they'd considered in their son. When he didn't act as they'd presumed, it was disconcerting. I appreciate your interesting and insightful take! Thanks!
  2. Very true and some interesting observations. I had a regular customer at a place who made the same choice. He and his wife are very happy to this day. He's frank about being bi, but he loves his wife and family. In any case, for those who are attracted to both, they deserve respect. Hopefully this story does that. Thanks for the great comments!
  3. Thanks so much!!! I hope you had a great holiday season.
  4. Maybe she was hiding it from herself and her son. I believe Sandy's mom was pretty confused overall, because as she said, "Girls can't be special friends." They already were and that's what drove her to find a distraction, which was usually some bum. Thanks for the awesome comments.
  5. In my mind, Sandy's observation is only confirming her own feelings. I believe Sally and Sandy's mom will live happily ever after together. Thanks for the lovely comments!
  6. Sounds good! I don't know where my garlic is grown, but it probably comes from California.
  7. Absolutely!!! Never too much, when cooked.
  8. I probably went light in the recipe on the garlic. I usually just keep adding it because we LOVE it. Yes, the frost melted away the illusion. Thanks my friend!
  9. Thanks so much. I love making this recipe more than regular lasagna because it has the same flavors without the extra work. I appreciate your kind words!
  10. There is some obvious denial on the mom's part, but isn't that true of any person exploring themselves. Sandy could only see the truth through a frosty, warbled window pane because his mind was open to it. Lots of times, it's only in the quiet times we can see, and accept, what is so plainly obvious to others. Thanks for such an insightful summary. I appreciate your kind words.
  11. Charles Dickens’ Turkey By Cole Matthews “What is forcemeat?” “I don’t know. What are you referring to?” “A recipe. This recipe calls for stuffing the bird with a mixture of forcemeat, stale bread, dried fruits, and herbs.” “Could it be sausage of some kind?” her boyfriend asked, looking up from his tablet. Pam sighed and continued flipping the pages in the old book. It was a vintage 1903 one she’d found in a local antique store, its pages brittle and yellowed, b

    Mark Weber!

They were funny blokes, and both would be tickled to death being called that. Kelly's 40th birthday party was a huge neighborhood event, and the highlight was him getting arrested by a friend of our who was a cop. Kelly was laughing and twittering about what a bad boy his was and needed the handcuffs. Mylo was also a funny guy too. We spent many an hour working on crossword puzzles at Muddy Waters, a local coffee house. Thanks so much!!!

I miss the Dayton's store, which I shopped at downtown for many years. It's since closed, but the memories remain. Thanks!

Oh, I believe we can take words and make they our own. As a former bartender at a gay bar, the love expressed through gentle teasing has healed many a heart. I experienced such isolation from friends and never experienced the teenaged years of interpersonal development necessary and only achieved it in later years. My use of these words is to empower not hurt. Thanks for the support!!!

Thank you so much! Kelly was a person who really volunteered a lot in the community. Mylo was the kind of person who would slip money into a donation basket on the sly, and not take credit for it. Their generous spirit inspired this story, which is an important part of the holiday. I really appreciate your support.

    Mark Weber!

I agree whole-heartedly. Kelly and Mylo were both very special characters in my life. They were support, sounding boards, helpers, and such fun people to know. My favorite memory of them is when we donned my great grandma's hats and went down to the Gay 90's on Easter one spring. Lots of people thought we were nuts, but we told them we were wearing our Easter Bonnets!!!! I like to think we started the tradition in the Twin Cities of Easter Bonnet contests!!! I don't think we did, but perhaps a kernel of our silliness took root. I appreciate your support! Thanks, Cole

Thank you so much. An enormous benefit to writing, or creating art in any way, is the therapy it gives. As you write about the past and the people who were part of it, things begin to make sense and little bits of memory bring pockets of joy. I cried writing this and laughed and even sang. I appreciate your support.

Thank you for reading them. It's so strange thinking back because as I was writing this, it felt like just a couple of years ago, and yet it was half a lifetime ago for me. I really appreciate your support.

Thanks Addy! Yes, it was a difficult story to write, in some ways, and in others it was so much fun. Meeting with Kelly right before he passed was so difficult, but I'm so glad I did it. It brought this flood of memories I channeled into this story. I appreciate your kinds words and wonderful friendship.

Thank you so much. It's sad how dear friends can drift apart. It's also heartening to know when you remember the shared experiences, you can relive the joy and love you have. I appreciate your support.
  21. A Vision in Frost By Cole Matthews Sandy tried hard not to listen. The shouting voices in the room below him were startling. His mother was using names he’d been told were bad. The man yelling back used words he didn’t really recognize, but the emotions behind them, driving them, were so awful, the young boy knew they were horrible too. When the fights got this bad, he would try reading a book and sometimes that would silence the noises. Tonight, it wasn’t working. His mo
  22. Mark Weber! By Cole Matthews December, 1994 “What are we going to do with all these cookies?” Mylo asked, putting the last glazed and decorated cookie on the wax paper. As I looked around my dining room and kitchen, almost every surface was covered with gaily adorned sugar and gingerbread cookies. My Christmas cookie decorating party had been a huge success. There had been ten people at the party drinking wine and beer, laughing, and icing cookies as fast as I could bake t
  23. Actually, I thought about sharing my family cranberry relish recipe, but I decided the scalloped corn recipe was too good to pass up. It makes a great dish to bring to a potluck for example. Thanks so much!
  24. Thanks Chris. I'm glad you enjoyed the story. We just had the 'corn goo' as Randy calls it for my family Christmas this last weekend. Yum!
  25. Yeah, he's not a bad guy, it's mostly just Cole impression of him. Often we interpret other's actions emotionally instead of factually and that always gets us into trouble. I'd love to see the dried corn recipe! I've never heard of that. I'm intrigued! Thanks dughlas!
