Looking at the photo that Leah had sent me, I had seen him before, but I couldn’t quite remember where from, and I had the screen of the photo on the phone when I sat down at the table for dinner that evening. “Hey, why do you have a photo of Kristian on your phone?” my brother Finn asked me, who always sits next to me at the dining table, “You know this person?” I asked sounding surprised, “I sure do, he is my best mate – Aden’s older brother, he is about a year or two younger than you,” Finn s

Grandfather from the Sheep Station is on Cooper’s father side of the family. The estate near Toodyay is from his mother’s side of the family, hence his cousins have no say on how it is run, as it is owned by Cooper from his maternal grandmother…

I headed back to the Watch Tower, not sure if I would find the young man there or not when I arrived. A few hundred metres before the Tower, I tooted the horn three times, and slowed right down, before parking in my usual undercover carport behind the tower. Once I had unlocked the back main door, I slowly entered, “Hello, this is Cooper entering, you can leave if you want or stay too, I don’t mind either way,” I said as I paused at the door and listened, and I heard no sounds so I entered, and

“Hello son, how are things up at Cobblers?” Dad asked when he answered the call, “A few minor problems but it is all sorted. I discovered that Andrew Frazer from high school is now a police officer and is based at Toodyay, we caught up for a chat and drink yesterday afternoon after he had finished work, and I think we will be staying in touch now that we work in the same region. Anyway, the main reason I called is I had a thought today about my cousins, which I wanted to run by you,” I sai

“G’day. Many of you have heard of the Avon Descent boat race from Northam to Bayswater, held in early August each year, where competitors and their crew and a band of dedicated volunteers camp alongside the Avon River at Cobblers Pool. We are very happy to inform you that as of this weekend, for six months of the year, the new and improved Cobblers Pool Campsite is available for campers to stay for a maximum of three nights a month… All 30 dedicated campsites are non-power sites, but there are t

Maybe it was the police…. Wanting to get back at them for being stopped by a senior AFP officer?

The next morning, after a bit of a sleep-in, I listened to the news as I ate breakfast when the next news item came on and I splatted my tea when I heard what the newsreader said. “We have a report of an incident that took place yesterday morning when the Governor of Western Australia was denied access to a property where there is a suitable function area to view the Avon Descent Race. Sources claim that the WA Police Escort and the Governor’s official vehicle were denied entry into the property

“Did you hear all of that boss?” Davies asked me as his voice became clearer, “Yes, can you just hang back in the background, I just want to hear what else is said,” I replied,” I responded, and Davies chuckled, “I was planning on doing that anyway,” he said to me and I heard a bit of rustling and a sigh, and not far away I could hear discussions happening within the Support Unit. “Look guys, be thankful that we have all of these wonderful facilities for us to use this year, it is far better tha

With the bigger vehicles now in place, Geoff, Jasper and I headed over to the shipping container behind the shed, which was the temporary store of all the chairs and tables, so we could set them up inside the shed, and we watched as several vehicles passed by, all of them carrying the required stickers on the vehicle allowing them access to the property. “I have a couple of those for you too, to put on your vehicle and one other that you nominated to have access,” Geoff said to me,” Just my vehi

Near the gate to the house, the 20-foot standard building would be placed on top of ten concrete blocks that would be delivered in the morning, along with a set of stairs, for easy access, and a waste holding tank and a water tank. This building has only partly been completed, with a functioning bathroom and basic kitchen area, and all internal walls, windows and plumbing installed, which is a basic one-bedroom cabin, which would be ideal as the Race Official’s building for the race, as the bedr

“Don’t forget I am heading to the estate tomorrow after the morning lecture, and I should be home in time for dinner if all goes well,” I said to Mum as I put my breakfast dishes in the dishwasher and gave her a peck on the cheek. “Yes, I did remember, is anyone going with you?” Mum asked me, “Yes, you know how we have the Canadian Ambassador coming up to the estate on Saturday, well I know his son from University, and he is coming with me today to check it out ahead of the weekend,” I said in r

“For heaven's sake, it is supposed to be a small gathering of staff and family for a day of watching the Avon Descent, not a bloody grand spectacle with dignatories from all over the place,” I snapped, as I tried to think of a plan to deal with this situation. “Oh! I am sorry about that, I will tell his office that there are no tickets available as it is a private function,” Mr Appleton responded. “Yes, if you can do that please, I am only allowing the Canadian Ambassador and his family to

“Hello Cooper, how are things in Western Australia?” the voice of Mr Thymes asked, “I am very well thankyou sir, just a little annoyed with what is happening with my former employers,” I replied. “Yes, I have all the information in front of me here, and I have consulted a colleague Barrister at a law firm there in Perth, he is a good chap, and we know each other from University days back in Edinburgh, where I believe you’re ancestor also studied,” Mr Thymes said in response. “What is his r

“I see you have found our little songbirds,” a new voice said from behind, as Davies arrived in the room, “I have indeed, and if you please, can you finish the piece that you were playing when I arrived,” I replied as I sat down to enjoy the mini-concert, with Davies sitting next to me and the lads sat nearby. “Remind me to arrange for a baby grand to be delivered here, so we can have more music on the property,” I whispered to Davies who looked shocked at first then smiled and nodded his head.

“That is very good news to hear. I look forward to working with you and getting to know how well this estate is run under your guidance,” I replied. “Will you be residing on the property, once your family regains management control next month?” Davies asked me. “I am not entirely sure about that, as I will be getting some guidance from my Grandfather on some matters, but he is still managing the station down near Norseman. I have a feeling that now that the family is returning to the estate, he

The four-door diesel Wrangler was far more than I expected to get, which is maroon, with wide wheel arches, side steps, bull bar, front winch, two bull bar-mounted spotlights, four roof rack-mounted spotlights, snorkel, passenger side awning, tow bar and rear light and reversing camera. Inside, there are five seats, plus a large rear cargo bay, CB radio, front and rear air-conditioning, and window tinting, and it was a manual which I preferred. It did have over 200k in milage which was a bit of

At the age of 20, I thought that my future was set, having graduated from high school with distinction in four key subjects, and at least an A- or higher for all other subjects, I had missed out on being Dux of the school by a very small margin and I was currently in my year third year of studying Agricultural Business and Science at University, which I wanted to complete before moving down to the station to work with Gramps, plus I had completed a Diploma in Emergency Health Care and a Graduate

Twenty-year-old Cooper Hudson is the oldest of four boys, who spent their first few years living on the family sheep station - Southern Hills, that is located on the south of the Eyre Highway, with the turn-off located 82 kilometres East of the nearest town of Norseman. Cooper is a third-year university student in Perth, where the family is based with their mother working part-time at the nearby college and their father often works away as he is a AFP senior officer. As the family enjoys another holiday down at the station, a big surprise is revealed, which changes Cooper's future totally.
