Washing hands is simply a matter of common sense that should be applied at anytime. Let's the health officials freak out. That's their job. They want to be "be safe than sorry" and that is how outbreaks are usually contained such as the cases of SARS, 1997 Hong Kong flu, H5H1 bird flu, etc. And we just relax. Thousands haven't gotten sick yet in a week, unlike the start of 1918 outbreak. It is highly unlikely that 1918 will repeat itself as it was a freak and rare virus. While it is not confirmed, it is still somewhat possible that this virus can mutate to a form that woud cause such strong immune system to overload and kill you by drowning your lungs with fluid. A strong immune system is not always good in some cases. This is what happened in 1918... it was unusual because it killed off so many young people with good immune system and health. So a strong immune system could just go against you instead of the virus. So far it hasn't been confirmed yet. It may be H1H1 virus (same type as the 1918 Flu), but it's a sub-type and not a direct descendant. Besides, we have come a long way in knowledge of medicine and diseases. Back in 1918, doctors thought it was just a "flu bacteria" due to the recent theory about germs. Now we all know it wasn't. We have developed treatments to control and calm down the immune system to prevent an overload on the lungs, filling it up with fluid. Pneumonia is caused by excessive fluid and invasion of bacteria that are normally harmless in the nose and mouth (the cilias are destroyed or overwelmed by the virus, making this possible). Flu doesn't really kill. It's the secondary inflections that do after the virus did its destruction on the air system. At least we could take some comfort that we're lucky enough to be born in an era of the most advanced medicine so far in history.

Yes. Canadian health ministers are telling us "DO NOT WORRY, EH!" It's not sure it has spread to New Zealand and Israel. It's only "possible" cases. Other countries with possible cases: Colombia, Spain, the United Kingdom, France, Brazil, Argentina, and Australia.

My secret? I'm naturally skinny. I can't lose or gain weight if I wanted to. My body is pretty much set on 130-135 lbs range for the past few years now. I could pig out a whole pie of pizza one evening and lose that few pounds in a few days without any effort. I walk a lot. I live in a city... it's a must. I don't have a car. Couple nights ago I drank 7-8 bottles of beer, two bowls of pasta with cremy tuna sauce (friend made it for us), and two tuna sandwiches. All of that in a couple hours. Then I went to my scale, I only gained a single pound.

Benji, relax a little more that you live in the 21st century. Treatments for complications from the flu have gotten much better than a hundred years ago. Vaccines, anti-viral drugs, etc. Hospitals have supplies to treat common complications that aren't unique to the flu. Etc. We're much less likely to die from the flu than our great-grandparents. No one has died in the USA yet despite 20 cases. That is why it's hard to understand why is it like that when Mexicans are dying.

No... Most likely it would be most effective to shut down the borders as there are no flu cases in Canada... yet. The flu hits young healthy adults, eerie reminder of 1918 Spanish flu. Too early to tell. It's not understandable why the Mexician varity is deader than the American one, which is mild.

Actually, the 1918 Spanish flu killed those who were the strongest and children and old were better off. That sort of flu used to provike a very healty immune system to go into overload and flooding the lungs with liquid. So far they haven't indicated that this new bug would do that. Just wash hands. Don't touch common things in public (like holding bars in subway, stairways, etc). If you get sick, don't go out. It takes months to develop one for each new flu virus. Mainly due to the time to produce them massively. It just cannot be done in a day.

To be frank, I didn't have that sort of fear that it would've happened at my own school. Instead, I find it a huge annoyance to see my high school forbidding backpacks, restricting all entrances to one little door only every morning between 8:10am until 8:30am (the school had 1000 students). The occasional drug sweep that kept us locked in classroom for two-three hours for no good reason during our own f**king lunch periods. Development of zero-tolerance policies that turned out to be counterproductive and self-defeating. Daily cop hall montioring offered by the city. Installation of security cameras. Fake bomb threats. So yeah, pre-Columbine is much better than the jerk-off measures that many schools still hold today that I considered no more than mere inconvidences. Thank god I graduated from that high school. My sister had much more freedom than I had during her high school days. My university had its share of school shooting in 1992. Actually, since 1989, Montreal had four school shooting that each damn well shocked the whole country.

I worked (very temporarily) for a nightclub in downtown Montreal and we all throw away glass bottles and cans in the trash as if there were no care in the world. Actually, seeing recycling bins for restos and bars are quite unheard of here in Montreal.
