  1. Chapter 8 I leave my house by the back door so I won't have to talk to my mother again. I guess I won’t be using her car after all. From the curb it's a short walk to the street that eventually leads out of town and becomes a trail further up into the cliffs and I hurry, eager to get there already. I put my hands in my pockets and feel the hard outline of my phone in there. I'm curious about Nathan's video, but I'm not sure I want to play whatever it is he made. I shouldn’t have decrypted
  2. Chapter 7 I finally get to my house, still thinking. It's early afternoon and my father isn't home. I see my mother's car in the garage, though. I hesitate, thinking whether I should go inside or not. I still have to get to the cliffs before dark, which shouldn't be a problem even if I have to walk all the way there-- but if I can borrow her car I would get there much more quickly. I slow down as I approach, debating with myself. I still don't want to talk to anyone just yet, but if I
  3. thank you for reviewing! things will take a turn for the worse soon, I'm afraid.
  4. thanks for the review! I actually considered adding another chapter but ultimately decided it wasn't needed. Feedback is always appreciated, though!
  5. there is a thin line between cluelessness and deliberate ambiguity - and Josh might not even be aware he's treading it
  6. thank you for reviewing!
  7. Chapter 6 Nathan's house is just around the corner, and even though it's right on the way to my place and I've taken this road a hundred times, I actually stop just as I come within sight of it. It's empty now, or at least it looks that way. I haven't seen Nathan's mother at all since Nathan jumped, which is good, I guess. One less person to ask me questions I don't really have the answers for. I mean, I could technically be considered Nathan's best friend. Nevertheless, when you got o
  8. thank you very much!
  9. thank you for reviewing! I'll keep those updates comin'
  10. Yup, most definitely. And jealousy can be a bad thing.
  11. Chapter 5 I leave the art school with the decrypted file safely on my phone. Now I am walking past the Chili's. There's lots of people inside, eating and having fun. This is the place where I first worked up the courage to ask Kate out, and it used to be one of my favorite spots in town. I haven't been there in a while, though. I look quickly away. I'm not in the mood for food, and when I compare how I feel now to the way I felt that night, a million years ago, it's like I'm seeing a life
  12. thank you very much! I selected the mixture of tenses to reflect the different parts of each chapter. As a writer, though, I also try and stay away from present tense if I can because if not, then it's really easy to slip back into past tense as you're writing. You have no idea how much I had to correct this story...
  13. thank you for reviewing! I'm glad you're sticking with the story
  14. as you point out, Nathan needs to work a lot on his social skills. Sometimes it's difficult for people like him to connect with others
  15. Single-mindedness coupled with a compulsive personality is definitely not a good match
  16. Chapter 4. Going to the cliffs At last, I get to the Art Design school. I saw Leo driving by earlier, but he was with his girlfriend so he didn't stop and only waved at me as they passed. I haven't really hung out with any of the guys since I heard about Nathan, but thankfully they haven't called me out on it yet. It's funny, though. At the beginning of the year I used to hang out with them all the time and I thought it was the coolest thing ever to be part of their group. Now I'm not so sur
  17. Yup. One time at high school was enough for me, too
  18. I know - though I like to think that kids are slowly becoming more tolerant these days, if only a little...
  19. tbh, I don't know what I'd do if I were in Josh's shoes...
  20. thanks! Josh has a few tough choices ahead of him, that's for sure
  21. Chapter 3. Trying out for the team I've walked right up to the high school grounds somehow, and it's not even on my way to the cliffs. The low red-brick building and the big fields behind it look strange now that they are mostly deserted because of the summer break. The grass is a little bit overgrown and everything is too clean, too orderly without students. I walk past the grounds slowly, thinking that at least I won't have to sit through a solemn but superficial service for Nathan in t
  22. sometimes the best friends you make are those most different from yourself
  23. thanks!
  24. Thank you! You raise an excellent point. Some stories are, well, just sad.
  25. That seems to be the most frequently asked question, and I hope my story will show just what went wrong.
